The Update Thread

Jarred and Brent, you guys ROCK! As much as I love my Epic MX, looks like I will be trading her in for an Epic W.

Ditto. Not only having better color science and 8k with new Epic W but the weight difference is significant from Epic MX to DSMC2 body. Just held my buddies WMg and it feels like half the weight of MX.

This is pretty exciting to be a RED customer. I really have never seen this sort of interaction before as a customer. Thank you Jarred, Brent, Graemme and all the RED staff that make this happen.

There is a treasure hunt of info in this insane 200 page thread so can I sum up what we know so far?

Specs and Pricing:

Weapon Helium = Same specs as Stormtrooper 8K but Black instead of White. 8k slightly bigger than S35, 8k 60fps frame rate. $49,000 new

Epic W = 8K S35 unknown sensor size, unknown frame rate. I assume 8K at 24fps at lower bitrate than Weapon . I hope same frame rates and bitrate at 6K as Weapon MG Dragon 6k. $30,000 new

Upgrade Options:

Epic Dragon / Scarlet Dragon / Epic-MX / Scarlet-MX / Red One = $17,500 Upgrade to Epic-W

Scarlet-W already delivered or deposit = $10,000 Upgrade to Epic - W

Weapon MG = $9500 Upgrade to Epic - W or $15,000 upgrade to Weapon Healium

Carbon Weapon 6k owners = $6000(?) Upgrade to Weapon Helium

Carbon Weapon 6K owners with Dragon VV deposit = $0 upgrade to Helium 8K

*updated with Jarred confirmation on Dragon owners

Am I close?

It would be rather strange if a used, almost ten year old, RED One would have the same trade-in value as an Epic Dragon that you still officially "can" buy new for $24000 at RED.com...

Robert, we said he was close, not perfect.

And, FWIW, we have been discussing this Oct 11 stuff for quite awhile. Anyone buying an EPIC DRAGON right now goes in with eyes wide open...

Thanks to John for creating a "best guess" reference to hold RedUsers over until the official announcement. Thanks to Jarred for his willingness to confirm it's proximity to their actual plans so RedUsers can chill out until the 11th. As Brent noted, there have been many hours of internal discussion about how to be fair to customers across the spectrum of upgraders their policies have created over the years. Jarred promises to have good options for all existing owners/depositors/pre-payers in the Oct. 11th realignment, even to the point of taking a financial hit in exchange for doing right by their customers. Without going back in time and magically improving sensor yields/supply chain issues - what more can you ask?

Cheers - #19

Seriously - well put. Once again an unprecedented offer. RED has more loyalty to it's customers than any other company. Could anyone imagine Canon, Sony or even Arri doing something like this?

Raven is not getting an upgrade. Only people who once started with the raven order then changed to a Scarlet-W get the upgrade, so it's the scarlet-w getting the upgrade not the raven. It was always clearly stated that it would never have an upgrade. If you were somebody who thought you would want to participate in upgrades you we're given the option to change over to a scarlet-w because that was the upgradable camera.

No one asked you tzatziki lol

so the Raven Helium is when? next fall? :)
damn, that has a nice ring to it "raven helium" starting rumors!

So if I switch my Raven order to Scarlet-W before Oct 11th, then upgrade to Epic-W on October 11th, the original Raven timestamp will pass all the way to Epic-W order?

Wonder if I'd rather do that or if I'd rather have a camera in my hands sooner...

yes... remember the whole basis of this program is for those that are still waiting on cameras and to reduce the load on the Scarlet-W backlog, all the other guys that are getting thrown a bone get to wait behind those. This may look like our normal upgrade program but it's not.. so the normal rules don't apply and we can modify everything as we go along to whatever gets us out of that backorder hole the quickest.

The only exception to that is of course brand new stand alone Helium camera orders, thats the absolute quickest path, but not a path most of you I assume will be taking.

Will Weapon Helium upgrades be a different line than Epic-w upgrades? Or is it all one big waiting line?

That will likely fluctuate... I am starting to get a little terrified about the Epic-W demand that seems to have already been built up.

I'm assuming the difference between Epic-W and Weapon Helium are similar to the difference between the Mg and Carbon Weapons?

I placed another deposit on a Scarlet-W the other day with the only intention of upgrading it to an Epic-W deposit. I know I'm going to be near the back of the line, but the Helium is worth the wait. Especially for such an amazing price!

I say everyone jump on the Epic-W upgrade. It's a great deal. DO IT!! Come on do it. Seriously everyone that ordered a Scarlet should do this.

(he says with a sinister grin and a hope that everyone in the Scarlet line ahead of him will jump lines.) :sneaky2:

Yup. All this is soooo good. Crazy mad props RED team.

Question:

If I stay with my Scarlet-W preorder (Jan. 1st timestamp) is there a better chance I will get that camera in my hands sooner?

Yes, I know I'd be passing up one helluva deal to go over the Epic-W, but would I be trading an opportunity for a better camera for a camera that would be in my hands faster?
