The Update Thread

I love it when Jarred lets the hints slip out but then again they present so many questions.

The biggest thing I'm wondering about now is the hierarchy of this line-up.

I'd have thought that Helium being 8K would mean that the Epic-W had to have the more powerful processor of the Weapon 6K CF, rather than that of the Weapon 6K Mg. But that would put it *above* some of the Weapons in the hierarchy *and* perhaps right next to Weapon Helium (perhaps: Raven > Scarlet-W > Weapon 6K Mg > Weapon 6K CF > Epic-W > Weapon 8K Helium > Weapon 8K VV ?).

But that can't be right because then why would you need both Helium variants? And you wouldn't want to split the Weapons. There must be some major feature differentiation between all Weapons and all non-Weapons such that it goes Raven > Scarlet-W > Epic-W > Weapon 6K Mg > Weapon 6K CF > Weapon 8K Helium > Weapon 8K VV right? Can't wait until Jarred drops the next hint on what that might be...

Also, is 6K CF only there as a stepping stone / placeholder until 8K VV ramps up? Will that option fade away?

I agree that it's confusing, but I think there's one simple move that makes it all simpler. Oct they kill MG weapons, and call the 6k dragon sensor cams Scarlet-Ws.
Epic-W ends up being the production run of the stormtroopers, and is 8k S35.
Vista-W is 8k VV, Raven is 4k small cam..Lineup is far simplified, with a pretty clear hierarchy.

Yeah, the assortment of all the different cameras is pretty confusing at the moment but I'm pretty sure RED will clear things out upon the Epic-W release.

Here are the current prices of new brains with one OLPF at Red.com (correct me if I'm wrong)
Of course limited edition Helium 8K and Epic-W currently not available.

$59500 Weapon CF Forged Dragon 6K
$59500 Weapon Helium 8K limited edition
$49500 Weapon CF Woven Dragon 6K
$30000 Epic-W Helium *K (price stated by Jarred)
$29500 Weapon Magnesium Dragon 6K
$9950 Scarlet-W Dragon 5K
$6950 Raven Dragon 4.5K

Well, also lets put it in perspective, how much would you have paid as down payment on SXT for Arri to give you option of XT. When you say "gave you the best camera in their lineup to hold you over until yours got there"of course, what in fr***kin hell do you expect after forking out minimum $82k (for BASIC set)? Well I tell you what. Give RED $82k for VV and lets see if you don't get Stormtrooper to hold you over. Its just f**kn unfair for you to make that comparision. Cash is hard and waiting is a bitch but what you are comparing is not FAIR. The cash deposit is $1k and a promise from Red to deliver on a time frame. Yes it does affact people's income, but you could have gotten a full working Scarlet-MX for (really) cheap to hold you over and I bet you recover the cost over a 12 month cycle (perhaps I am wrong there) but your analogy is stiil not FAIR!!!

On the brighter side, lets hope you got a fast mouse click on the 11th, all this wait will melt away once you get your baby. Trust me:drool:

I was trying to point out that the Argument of "look at Arri customers ordered cameras 2 years ago and haven't got anything/heard anything" - isn't accurate. You are right, you can't compare the 2 but you can't say they left their customers high and dry and we are lucky to be getting the info we are because arri doesn't care.

This is a very exciting time for cinematographers to have the ability to own a camera system that not only captures images worthy of the big screen, but a modular system that enhances on set efficiency and ease for your camera dept. I thank you Jarred for your tireless work and effort. The bottom line, which everyone on here already knows, is that your focus and determination to make these tools for us helped evolve our on set workflows as well as gear reliability and functionality. I have been a long time user of both Reds and Alexas. I always felt for a long time that the tool is just a tool until it can bring more to the table than its counterpart. I patiently wait to receive my first owned Red in October, and get it set of for feature work right away. We work in the Showbiz, and part of that means we should take pride in our camera builds, keep the rig tight, clean and efficient, and these new DSMC2 systems are flawless in that respect. I can't wait! Thank YOU.

Loosely related to updates, and while the seas are calm. No SW yet but today I received what I can only describe as a beautiful piece of marketing. I don't even need a camera to enjoy this!

Edit: adding an image from an iPhone has proven to be a challenge. Fail.

GDU brass handle for DSMC2 sidehandle. This thing is sick(and heavy).

this might do it...

RED should build a web page that you select which camera you own - and then it presents any/all upgrade options. Like the "BUILD YOUR CAMERA" - they should make a "UPGRADE YOUR CAMERA" - there seems to LOTS of options .....

TRUST ME, it will be a heckuva lot clearer out of the gate compared to NAB 2015 : )

That's good. I would have upgraded at NAB, had I known the actual costs. I heard $19.5K to upgrade, and I tuned out to the rest. I found out too late, there was the price drop, an accessory credit, etc.

Are we looking at like Oct 11, like midnight PST, or some other time? Should I block that day for getting in line?

Maybe I rent a DeLorean DMC-12 from Dr. Emmet "Doc" Brown to be first in the line in October 11 :-)

So it there something special about October 11th and why it was chosen for the announcement date?
