  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Update Thread

heh heh heh you asked the wrong thing from the wrong guy... The only way I am getting away with this is because I am in Japan right now just far enough away from him so he can't slap me on the side of the head :)

And I thought your crystal ball would never make it through customs. Silly me...

Mikael's updated app will have head slapping from far away countries. Mark my words!

Far away countries yes.... I'm already ahead of him.

And you thought I was just playing when I befriended Elon Musk and carved a little Internet connected closet space on the International Space Station :)

Talk about fleeing for the hills!

The relationship between Jarred and Brent would make for a good reality show.

New accuracy for color. Hmmmm.

One limitation of Bayer CFA imaging is the trade off between sensitivity and color information discrimination accuracy (lack of cross-talk) in choosing dye strength on the color filter array. I wonder if it would be possible to add full spectrum white light to the optical path in proportion to the density (stop loss) of the "gels" on the tiny phototsites. The actual imaged light would "ride atop" the added light, which is matched to the filters so the decoded values are nominal. Sort of like how a sub-carrier works in analog FM radio. One potential upside of such a scheme is to improve signal/noise ratio by remapping values into a scale that offers greater mathematical precision and make it possible to be more accurate during decode in identifying and removing FPN (fixed pattern noise) caused by low level EMF energy.

This may be the stupidest suggestion in the history of camera forums, but with all the successes we have seen the last few years with back-light illuminated sensors it got me thinking. Remapping and boosting the signal first - before the high cut filter - was part of how Dolby noise reduction for sound extended S/N ratios. Could a similar tactic work for measuring photons? I suppose way more sophisticated versions of such schemes could easily be under the hood of many modern cameras, hard to know what any manufacturer does in their front end DSP (digital signal processor) chips since the details are proprietary IP.

Cheers - #19

Blair, look up intensified CCD, and Electron Multiplying CCD, for two different ways of doing it. EM is being improved these days (you might find comparisons from 5 years ago, look for more recent, and I thinknthey ste adding it to CMOS. Also, look at my 5M ISO camera thread, it uses a film that avveots a wider angle, frequency and amount of light, I think. I'm fuzzy at the moment. Also look up the modified Bayer patern that uses a clear pixel, that Kodak was using. Also look up the so called random pattern, whichbI found really is a tilted square pattern, like I would have done (can't remember if I had come up with something like that 12 years ago). These, and continouse counting/measuring of photons, and log techniques of course, are major advantages. I imagine that Red already uses log.

Pacific Rim again?

Maybe he has two big Red Crystal Balls?

One in America and another big one spread over into Japan.

Guys, if this is the update thread, how are we meant to find updates? You would need to modify the first post to list posts where the latest lot of updates start. We can click on ted team from there (can we have a reverse direction red team, so we can work.backwards please, and a forwards and backwards through our own posts, and search for out own names back and forwards .... Ha, ha, seriously all useful features, 90% of the posts are skippable, and I can't read them all). :)

It's smart though... they can use cheaper older technology and use off the shelf processor chips and still get a great picture. An Alexa should actually cost much much less than a Weapon does to make, we just have a different philosophy on how much to charge customers.

It is a much safer path to take.. They are making things much easier for them, and it is a way less bumpy road to drive down when you don't need to invent things. We are screwy that way.. we invent something great and then don't sit around long enough to milk it.. we force ourselves to keep pushing further and further. arguably ( from a business perspective ) to a fault. They have been sitting on an high resolution sensor for quite some time now...because their customers don't really demand new.. they demand safe. They can sit on stretching out the product lifespan for much longer, pay off their investment longer, you know, normal how-to-run-a-proper-business stuff.

You know, I get why they do this in price-limited markets. Sony used a bunch of off-the-shelf NEX parts to make the slow-as-molasses first gen A7 because they had no idea if there would be a market for a full-frame mirrorless in a bigger form factor, and if there was they knew there'd be a limit on how much people would pay for it.

But when we're talking about Arri, or Sony's cine division, or Canon's cine division, where we know from experience that they can set literally any price they want and people will pay it....I don't know what their justification is.

Ok, let me derail this tread and put it in the mainstream news search engines: GUNDAM VS TRANSFORMERS Confirmed. Because Red, Bay, Jarred in Tokyo with NHK. Out during the Olympics. Because 8K.

Good to see you back Les.

For cinema cameras from those manufacturers, the volumes are so low the cost has to be spread accross them, and they have to pay their dealer, repair and support network. So they want large market share and to make a bucket load of money, but ate top heavy. They frsnkily can just make a A7 cinema camera for the same price and off load the top heavyness. But making a good low end consumer camera that also can act as s cinema and prosumer eng camera cuts into all the cameras above it, and potential for big margins. The problem is, that volumes upstairs can get so low, that the bliat threatens the companies viability. So they sail on up and down the waves. The truth is, according to all those economic laws of true competition, and fair competion, they should make $1000 cameras that can be used in all markets the same camera, three to five cameras and forget the high priced stuff unless it is actually costly.

Now, another issue is that Sony has the tip sensor company in the works, and about the top sensor technology in the mass and cinema markets. So, yes, they have something to sell. Now Red, lean and mean, is competing on large volume, some sensor tech deals, likely including all a competitors previouse technology, and offering the good stuff at the cheaper price to get the volume. It can be done cheaper than BM, but you need the volume. The 6k smartphone is another such product to raise volume to pay for technology development.

Now, you know these things zles, but I'm speaking expansively for this that don't. However, sorry my writing is a mess, I'm still trying to fully recover from the last bout of illness.

Wayne, socialize... take a little time off (in the thread) from information gathering and enjoy the socializing?

You might have missed the rename thread posts instead of having monthly posts, and world largest thrad posts. How do you find the updates in the eventual 10k posts, or the last updates up to thousands of posts ago. Just some practical chill out advice, and sign post the action.

Stiiiiillllll things are way too hyper here, sndnI haven't let people know it is likely that the barnyard keepers are letting it go that way, because what is coming in October is going be really.good. Somebody did say cameras (and we are yet to see the laser projector, the reday 2 network, that extra wide sensor (and all the other monstrous announcements) 3D single lens firmware updates). A few pre announcements on these for Christmas, CES, or Nab release, would be a blessing. PersoballynIm interested in RAW unprocessed frames from the 6k Smartphone, to get an idea of how good it is (hint, hint :) )

ok. quick update for those who are just checking in on this thread.

October will be huge for a few reasons:

#1 Official Announcement of Epic-w Helium, announcement for release dates for Weapon-Helium and Epic-W, Announcements for upgrade paths for WEAPON-Mg, EPIC-MX, EPIC-Dragon, and SCARLET-W camera systems.

#2 New Color science for red cameras. (Helium comes installed, Dragon gets tools for Post to get the look)

#3 SW customers who are still waiting for orders may get a chance to learn about a special offer from RED.

#4 AKS like the new 7" hinge-less touch display and sidehandle begin to ship
