  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Update Thread

Ho here you go...now I wish I got the SW later...hope there will be a good path in the future also for SW owners, but anyway I think the who got the SW should be quite happy for few years...no?

Yeah for sure. I don't think I can or would want to swing any sort of Helium path even though I'll likely be waiting until after this announcement because I want a camera in hand as soon as I can and the S-W is such a great tool that I'm looking forward to.

From the medley of Jarred's previous posts, I'll take a stab at guessing: seems as though Helium sensor production has higher yields than the dragon at the moment and they can accomplish a few goals by allowing the switching/upgrading -- putting more sensor needs on the more reliable line, less sensor needs on the line that's overworked, and appeasing less-than-stoked customers. This all at the cost of 2016's bottom line (which has to be in rough shape right now as they are hitting so many issues on top of lots of Helium R&D), but hopefully will create a steadier and continued repeat business.

Will be really interesting to see what options come about but I'm not totally sure my wallet can handle any more upgrade thoughts haha.

Interesting maybe I should cancel my Raven for a scarlet w?

Just curious. Why doesn't Red use Dual gain sensor readout like ARRi does to increase DR?

Technically they don't actually use Dual Gain pixels.

They just take one sample signal from the pixel and use two lower quality ADC to process it. Only one sample from the photo diode. It's a clever trick to use two lower resolution, lower quality lower bit ADC instead of one good one, but they brilliantly marketed it. That actually adds noise to the midtones to have that magnitude of analog gain, but ARRI customers don't seem to notice. People usually don't look for noise in the midtones.

It's smart though... they can use cheaper older technology and use off the shelf processor chips and still get a great picture. An Alexa should actually cost much much less than a Weapon does to make, we just have a different philosophy on how much to charge customers.

It is a much safer path to take.. They are making things much easier for them, and it is a way less bumpy road to drive down when you don't need to invent things. We are screwy that way.. we invent something great and then don't sit around long enough to milk it.. we force ourselves to keep pushing further and further. arguably ( from a business perspective ) to a fault. They have been sitting on an high resolution sensor for quite some time now...because their customers don't really demand new.. they demand safe. They can sit on stretching out the product lifespan for much longer, pay off their investment longer, you know, normal how-to-run-a-proper-business stuff.

Most people don't buy an Alexa to be at the forefront of tech.. they buy it because it is a standard. And that is OK. There is room for both of us.

I recently worked on a commercial with a DP from Italy. At first he was insisting on an Arri Alexa for the shoot (wasn't in the budget), but the director had worked with me before suggested we shoot with the SW (he grunted a little bit). Long story short he was completely blown away. when he saw the prores feature, the lightweight feel of the camera and the image he was getting, he looked at me and he didn't even have to say anything, i could tell he was sold.

I always know something fun has happened in this thread when I check back after only a day and 10 pages have exploded into existence!

Stoked to see what happens in October… In a weird way, I had a feeling that I was going to be glad I ordered my Scarlet-W so late!

I know this sounds crazy and I am expected to say stuff like this, but If we only made one camera, The Scarlet-W, we could probably charge 5x the price for it and it would be acceptable, because if you just look at it from a spec standpoint, and image quality standpoint, it pretty much beats everything else on the market that doesn't have a RED logo on it, no matter what the price point.

bah. We probably should of done that ( charge way more ) . We probably wouldn't be in this nut-job backorder situation we are in if we did.

Damn, I've been so bummed at all the delays, but all this news is getting me riled up again to be a future RED owner. I shot a little music video on a rented Scarlet-W last month it is pretty insane how good the highlight roll-off, skin tones, and dynamic range is on the new camera. I stretched the image in incredibly far post and the image never fell apart.

Since its clear now that October update is the update to look forward to, will there be any update come 3 days time?

So glad you didn't. I'll take the backorder.

We might phrase it as a "reward for waiting"... But in reality it's more like a "yeah we fucked up, sorry "

and no you all aren't getting free cameras...but you will get some paths that are going to cost you a bit more money (and me a lot more money)... If you want.

Just make sure you pay attention... Because like usual... It will likely cause another traffic jam very quickly..

I said it a few days ago.... Jarred always being loyal to your customers... This is a family... i would say Fuck the word "Customers" because they don't get this kind of rewards in real life... Some folks called me Lucky when the crazy upgrade happened to me... And I was extremely lucky and a few others. But you know what? we are all lucky... Look at what he's doing.... And he keeps on doing it! I am so happy for all the Scarlet W folks waiting for October...

We are lucky to be here with RED... Period...

Jarred, you are nuts man... Thanks again for being like this with all of us...

lol now people want their cameras to take longer fkn classic.
Hahaha, well what's a couple extra weeks when (by mid-to-late September) they've already waited over 9 months since placing the preorder? Context is important! But clearly Jarred and RED have shown that they ultimately want their customers happy, so I'm not too concerned. Excited to see what the offer is! (and hope my Scarlet-W takes long enough to get it  haha)

So if an Epic Dragon owner were to find himself in this crossroads what would you advice him to do?

- Wait till October and see what the announcements are before upgrading/buying anything.

- Pre-Order a Scarlet-W today and see what "floating path less covered in thorns" is all about

- Upgrade to a Weapon today and find out what your new option are come October.

Decisions Decisions. I've been debating between buying a Scarlet-W or upgrading to Weapon for months since it's about the same amount of monetary investment. The nice things is that no matter what I pick, it's going to be amazing... but it's so hard!

As someone that likely wont be able to afford to upgrade a SW deposit to whatever new options are coming out in October, the new color science news has me beyond pumped. Here we go again anticipation train!
