Technically they don't actually use Dual Gain pixels.

They just take one sample signal from the pixel and use two lower quality ADC to process it. Only one sample from the photo diode. It's a clever trick to use two lower resolution, lower quality lower bit ADC instead of one good one, but they brilliantly marketed it. That actually adds noise to the midtones to have that magnitude of analog gain, but ARRI customers don't seem to notice. People usually don't look for noise in the midtones.

It's smart though... they can use cheaper older technology and use off the shelf processor chips and still get a great picture. An Alexa should actually cost much much less than a Weapon does to make, we just have a different philosophy on how much to charge customers.

It is a much safer path to take.. They are making things much easier for them, and it is a way less bumpy road to drive down when you don't need to invent things. We are screwy that way.. we invent something great and then don't sit around long enough to milk it.. we force ourselves to keep pushing further and further. arguably ( from a business perspective ) to a fault. They have been sitting on an high resolution sensor for quite some time now...because their customers don't really demand new.. they demand safe. They can sit on stretching out the product lifespan for much longer, pay off their investment longer, you know, normal how-to-run-a-proper-business stuff.

Most people don't buy an Alexa to be at the forefront of tech.. they buy it because it is a standard. And that is OK. There is room for both of us.

what do you think of the extensive SXT delays? heck of a long wait for a minor uprez and body tweak? i was considering getting an SXT but how long until they drop the high res sensor and replace its what worries me? its not exactly cheap to kit one out... it was very odd how they released the amira and alexa mini and are giving alexa this late a minor spec boost. like they upgraded the lines from the bottom up and had a two year delay on the A cam release? strange line up... i was told its the same sensor in SXT and no new features so it took a long time to bring it to market and its claim to fame is a larger uprez...

This right here.

Owning a Red Epic MX- and Dragon- for almost 5 years, I can't really understand how people can't seem to see what i see every single time I start the camera and take pictures with it.

The raw workflow, the flexibility in post, the amazing resolution, the great colors, it absolutely is in its own league.

I've worked with Sony's, Canons, Panasonic, very little film, true, and have been in a couple of Alexa productions. I'm certainly not a David Fincher, Soderbergh, Luhrmann or P Jackson. But in my own, humble "World", of international commercials, of independent filmmaking, which is savagely competitive, where filmmaking work is incredibly competitive and resources are scarce, what Red brought to the table was a real revolution in motion picture capture.

The way the camera in itself grew over the years, the image just kept improving, the workflow more and more mature, new color science, new firmware upgrades, new features... it is unbelievable seing that the first images I did with the Epic, to this day, still stand the test of time- and I can pull printable stills from them.

That is why I really can't see, as a personal purchase for a DOP, Director, or Privately own self producing shop, one really going for any other brand of cameras.

True, Arri is a Standard. Not only for the picture their camera produces, which admittedly is good, but because of the decades of being in the industry, of providing great service, of being a great standard also in lighting and other support equipment. Arri helped "build" the industry.

But Red's place in modern filmmaking is as Historic as Arri's. You guys really are in the hearts of not only filmmakers, but DOP's for opening amazing creative opportunities with the revolutionary form factor and High Resolution capture and workflow, and post production professionals for opening new doors in how much more could be done to the image after capture.

Keep up the excellent work, Jarred and Red Team. The world of Modern Cinema needs you all to continue this path of innovation and pushing boundaries. maybe it doesn't make much business sense, but it makes History. It pushes Art forward. It helps build new, cinematic worlds once thought impossible. And it empowers the creatives. As a creative of the audio visual, I can only thank you. Keep doing what you're doing team RED!

I know this sounds crazy and I am expected to say stuff like this, but If we only made one camera, The Scarlet-W, we could probably charge 5x the price for it and it would be acceptable, because if you just look at it from a spec standpoint, and image quality standpoint, it pretty much beats everything else on the market that doesn't have a RED logo on it, no matter what the price point.

bah. We probably should of done that ( charge way more ) . We probably wouldn't be in this nut-job backorder situation we are in if we did.

Shh, I won't tell Finance you just admitted that, haha...

Let's be honest Jarred. Where is the fun in that?

We all know that you love making these advancements as much as we enjoy using them. The kid in you could never handle holding back. ;)

Heh. This thread will go down in history as the "scary truths and how it is thread".

Wow! This thread has gotten good. Certainly won't help me get to sleep early as I know Jarred loves the late night epic posts, haha. For me as a Scarlet-W owner, things that come to mind right away are. Will this new colour science be for Helium only? Or is dragon going to be looking better then ever as well. Since Epic-W and Epic magnesium will have a lateral move, + $9950 according to the room rental rate, then to go from Scarlet-W to that will certainly be the price of a few more Scarlet-W brains. People in line for Scarlet-W now if not allocated by the update in Oct will get a bit of a priority in the line similar to raven to scarlet-W, with a bit of love from Jarred on the price as well. But I'm thinking it would still be the cost of say buying two more Scarlet-w brains. Hmmmmm, so much going on it's insane. I have been with red for almost 5 years now, and it sure is a fun, interesting ride. Keep on killing it over there.

This thread is great keep it going. I've noticed a few posts even got deleted.. Some dude got the boom stick earlier

In RED's defense, some posts are deleted by the poster. I've deleted many of my own, once they've served their purpose.

Yeah, I do too. Sometimes after I leave I get some freak come along chuck some sort of fit, it gets deleted, and when I come back the next day I'm like, what happened man.

Maybe we should just eliminate the monthly update thread, and retitle this thread "Deep Thoughts with Jarred Land"? I like the drop in's from Jarred to spur on conversation through-out the month rather than waiting for one long post at the beginning of the month.

Oh man, you guys are treating this thread like a poker machine, sitting.there refreshing, pulling that lever, waiting to see what comes up next. :) Time to stop smooching up to the casino staff, and get some sleep. :)

HAHAHAHA Wayne.. I'm supposed to be chilling with my wife and kids before everyone heads back for school... this thread tho... @@ must know more!!!!

Lol! I was in two web history record breaking threads years ago. Now its just insane, even around here. Even if you go to 3000 posts, somebody out there may have a thread with 6000 posts. :)

Oh Quinn! (hold it, was that your wife calling).

There has been an active discussion on this in another thread that answers a lot of these questions.

Thats different... :)

Heh heh that's actually not a bad idea .
