I am in the same boat with an Epic Dragon (paperweight); does it apply ?

I had a small meeting this week with a friend of mine DP, who only shoots Alexa. I played him on RCX on an OLED 4K screen the still from Helium around Washington DC. Since he was not seeing my GUI I told him that these were stills from a new Nikon camera. He just praised the image over and over. How clean it was, how malleable, how correct the colours were, the skin-tone, everything was awesome. Then I told him that he was looking at Helium by RED. He immediately told me "I want these cameras for my next TV series, we start in January".

I also brought an awesome colourist same test, this is camera agnostic guy, with a lot of experience, after playing for 45 mins with the Helium stills; I literally had to stop him because he was having to much fun and we needed the room. I asked him "what do you think?" and he smiles and says "wow, goodbye arriraw".

This sort of stuff is amazing. I love when you can open people's minds like this. Too many people hear rumors off the internet and just repeat them until they assume it's true.

1) Had a chance to spend some time with Jarred's 8K Helium Weapon yesterday at the ASC Clubhouse. Based on monitor output, to a Sony 25" A250 OLED, the noise floor is 2 FULL STOPS lower than my Carbon Weapon Dragon. Amazeballs. I can't believe I'm writing this, but I'm actually going to have a difficult decision when I get notified for my VV Dragon cut. Mind blown.

2) Apparently lost in the fervor over upgrade paths/costs, model naming conventions and Operation; Distract Brent (all topics worthy of discussion, not hating) is the upcoming release of RED's next generation image processing tech. In journalism, it's called burying the lead. I eagerly look forward to digging into this new image reconstruction environment and plumbing the depths of years of footage.

3) Over the years RED has endured a great deal of criticism for not making "pretty pictures" as easily as some competing cameras - but they had the balls to stay the course and not resort to front end image processing techniques that couldn't be "undone". They actually trusted us to manipulate the RAW data in RGB "development" to craft the imagery that fit our creative goals. RED's perseverance in the face of considerable criticism is extraordinary. Thanks to Jim's original philosophy, Jarred's focus and Graeme's genius - each advancement in image processing technology is applicable to every R3D ever made.

4) BTW, for all you flower/gift senders out there - I gave Jim/Jarred/RedTeam 6 Premium ($150/ea) tickets to the Indy 500 a few years ago as a token of my appreciation for all they have done. Mic drop ;-)

Cheers - #19

Im also super psyched for "upcoming release of RED's next generation image processing tech"

Glad to see this back on track.

We were in the middle of a love fest, and I'd like to get back to that.

Here's the thing, I think I'm about to lay my hands on the camera that I've wanted all my life.

I still carry a stills camera, I move between the Canon and Sony platform, but I've been blown away but what the 7RII can do for me. The additional resolution makes a clear and perceptible difference for what I do. The low light performance is also awesome. For the kind of stills I do, The FF 35 format is still preferable (see what I did there :). I think I've shot video on the Sony twice, and both was for tests. It's amazing given it's a stills camera, but I's no RED.

I've had most RED cameras and every sensor since the beginning. That platform allowed me to enter and thrive in the industry for awhile, getting to work with people like RED and Light Iron, as well as do my production stuff.

The sensors have gotten better. So have the form factors.

Mg Dragon is a great motion camera. It is also a very good stills camera. My Bud Ivan has proven that demonstrably. If you want to learn about that do his Reducation.

But even with Mg Weapon, for me at least we were not quite there. For landscape the additional resolution made a big difference, and capturing shadows at magic hour push the limits (for my personal bar) for stills low light performance. To keep the shutter speed up to avoid blur, I had to push into the areas of the blacks that were very good, but the suffered by comparison for my stills cameras.

RED is providing a path to a camera that is better in both of those regards. This is my dream camera.

With the evolving and improving ergonomics, smaller lighter batteries, and I'm hearing and seeing a much cleaner lower end, for the first time in my life I might actually have a stills and motion camera that totally works for me as both with NO MATERIAL COMPROMISE in either of it's roles.

That is so totally F'n KickAss I don't know how to talk about it.

How amazing will it be to be able to carry one tool, deeply know one tool. You have one set of filter, batteries, mattboxes media. One workflow, understand one set transforms to get to the desired image, and with a little care being able to pull razor sharp stills from motion WOW.

To shoot in crafted available natural lighting and capture all of the glory of magic hour and get beautiful skin tones.

I can't wait for the eleventh.

I have a camera boner.

I already wired my money, I'm paid in full the moment I get a chance to push the order button.

Jarred (and Brent, and a small army of other people) Thank you for keeping a path forward open for us. Whatever that ends up looking like. I am profoundly grateful.

Now is there anything else you want to tell us to get the love fest going again?

We're a pissy often self entitled group, and deep down you know we love the whole RED team, we've bet our lives on it, and are fanatical enough to have created a Russian novel of a thread about it, all because we cant wait to get our hands on what you make.

Thanks for putting up with us.

Steve, A7RII's are back ordered, dump it while you can. A few days after getting my Stormtrooper, mine went away, and in the days following all the other stills cameras went away. This is not for everybody, but for a somebody who travels a lot and wants to work with just one system, Helium covers the bases. A motion and stills dream camera.

Researchers have made a very funny comparison with monkeys to a similar situation... the results are funny... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meiU6TxysCg

Wow, you can't miss a day in these threads. This is pure gold, hilarious yet such a good example lol.
If you give too much, people tend to become entitled to your generosity and keep on wanting more, there is no way to please everyone. It's really cool to see how much Jarred cares for his customers and how much our voices can affect his mood. Thanks for caring Jarred, I hope you feel better.

Those are awesome! Didn't do one for your Scarlet-W?

Unfortunately not, time collision with a bigger commercial project shot with Scarlet-W. I can tell you awesome pictures of this cam...
The project is in post-production now... little sneak-peek (without color-correction/grading only LUT):
