The Update Thread

I’m new to reduser but from personal experience, having the opportunity to become a RED owner for my small Fargo, ND production company represents a gigantic opportunity. When RED launched the Raven and Scarlet-W last year that door opened up for me. Placed my order, rented RED wile I waited and going through these steps, learning and being able to delivery the amazing images that come out of the RED cameras has not only put my small company on the map but also allowed us to grow a healthy 22% this year so far. Thanks to RED and the Fire Chief’s leadership I am able to grow my company, employ more people and contribute to my local economy…I can’t say Thank You Jarred loud enough to make this point. I thought I would share this because I have to guess that there are many stories like mine all around the world. Thank you.

This to me is what probably makes Jim and Jarred smile at what they set out to accomplish. I don't know if they actually said the words but if not, I do think they had the goal of bringing unparalleled imaging to every place on the globe at an affordable price point somewhere in their line-up.

And look where things are now... an unbelievable number of people world-wide are about to be shooting 8k while most of the rest of the world will still be on HD at the most.

I know we as individuals are wrapped in our day-to-day situation and that's as expected. But if we step back and look at the IMAX-sized big picture, appreciation sets in.

I read many, many posts of appreciation for what RED has done for people in their individual lives, Yet I think this company's legacy will be the appreciation for the way it changed not only the tech of the imaging industry... but for the changes it fostered in how to do business as well.

To use a football analogy, the best NCAA coaches are the ones who love their players and their players respond. RED seems to embody that same bond with their customers.

To use another sports analogy, it has been accepted that Arnold Palmer popularized the sport of golf and his success created the atmosphere for the future success of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed....

RED's success has made it possible for other camera companies to grow and progress.

I don't post much, but I do follow the action in some of the threads. Some of this upgrade complaining I understand as people get overly passionate, but mostly I just don't get it. I have a Scarlet-MX that I didn't get on the upgrade train. Not because I couldn't afford it, but simply because I love this camera! It does everything I need and probably more. Would a Dragon or Helium sensor be "better"? Maybe in some respects, but I just work with the tools that I have, and you know what... RED made a pretty damn good camera. I love my little Scarlet.

I'll go back to watching the fireworks in the next 400+ pages of this thread now. :001_cool:

I think some people forget how amazing some of these older machines still are. They were top of the line then and still relevant now.

Even having an opportunity to upgrade to Epic-W or even a package bundle pricing is a treat.
Thank You

We wouldn't have all those discussions if RED havn't been so disruptive since its first appearance. They made it possible for a whole new generation of shooters to work and play with the best tools. And those new shooters are often facing very limited budgets. Thats where this is coming from. Everyone has his own place here, everyone his own situation. So things get heated up quickly, sometimes people loose the bigger picture.

I am grateful for all this and to be a little part of it. Shooting a RED, getting my hands on a Scarlet has changed my life in many ways i didn't expect it. Even the time before... It's all part of a journey for me to find my passion, learn about filmmaking and photography, then later my eyes - and finding a solution to see better. Things wouldn't have happened without that dream of doing film-work, without first steps. And it was RED that gave me lots of the needed right impulses here to move on, to try out new things, to catch fire. Well RED is on second place, the first place belongs to a wonderful friend. ;)

So, getting access to a tool like a RED, to a real professional cinema-grade camera, to the same "filmstock" P.J. and others used, had a huge impact on me.

And all the excitement for Helium and 8k do remind me a lot of that time before the Scarlet-X announcement. And i'm going to do a few stupid things to get my hands on a EPIC-W. Which is nuts, because i never assumed i would have the chance to tier up to a high-end RED.

I'm not shooting jobs, i'm not shooting films yet, but i love to shoot with RED and this has literally changed my live. I jumped from a visus below 0.01 to 0.3, just because of the things i learned about cinematography, photography, lenses and then finally eyes, just because i tried to recreate what i see for a film-project.

It started here, with the abstract dream of getting this 3k-Scarlet for my capturing-the-world-around-me-to-watch-it-really-close-on-the-screen experiments.

Just to tell you there are other stories that happen, when you put up a truly visionary product into the hands of new customers.

New plan. Dragon owners need to upgrade to Weapon first, like you should need to, like all the other loyal guys that played by the rules did.

So no more direct Dragon to Epic-W or Weapon Helium. Which is a shame because you guys were going to get something a bit special in all this.. but o well.

So There you go Nick.. you get what you wanted.. for us to be fair.

Jarred, Please, I beg you to reconsider, I'm happy for going Epic Dragon to Epic-W for $14,500, it's a great deal honestly, I've already started saving money and planning,,

Nick and his friends at NYC have their own opinions, but they don't speak to everyone owning an Epic Dragon.

Going directly to Epic-W for $14,500 is a better deal to me than going to Weapon MG with all the accessories, and I'm sure lots of people think the same way.

I hope you reconsider, and either way I still think RED is being very generous to us.

I just had an opportunity to see a Stormtrooper at Keslow Camera here in Chicago. Apparently they have two, and when Jim Summers told me that, I literally had to take a knee. The camera was being prepped for an event this weekend and I asked their techs if I could come in to ogle, breath on or just brush up against one of their unicorns. After being stared at like a maniac for a moment, he casually let me check out the camera. I asked the techs their opinions on the camera and what sort of feedback they have been getting. User feedback is through the roof. One gentlemen said the Helium sensor is by far the best RED sensor he has had the pleasure to see, especially in high iso's. Which there are great examples that everyone can go and see for themselves, some links have been peppered in throughout this thread, including Mr. Toia's incredible piece. He said that the camera was on a shoot the week before using Hawks. We simultaneously lit up, and he grinned like a kid that was surprised he just landed his first back flip. He laughed and said now I don't know how much of that was the glass or the sensor........ and we laughed and both knew the sensor is a champ, period. Now, I'm fully aware that these monsters in a mouse size package are off the shelf for good. That said, I'm making it a goal to someday own one of these. Whether is 5 or 50 years from now. They are one of the coolest things I've ever seen. I'm putting the pennies away and sending goodness out to the world that I"ll get an opportunity to wrangle one 2nd hand.
The reason I'm blathering on, is up until that moment at Keslow, I personally have been living vicariously through all of you who are jumping into this incredible opportunity. For the last 48 hrs though, I've done nothing but conceive, concoct, and counsel all possibilities to jump in and swim with you all next week. Really looking forward to what financing options are in place, I hope it includes donating plasma, baby sitting, or hell even sweeping the floors at RED. I've got a 68 mustang fastback to trade if anyone is interested ;)
From what I've seen and talked to others who have hands on experience with the Helium sensor, it's a triumph. It seems foolish to not try and jump on board. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has calculated the value of all their assets to find a way into getting into game.
We're so close to the 11th and the excitement and nerves are ramping up. I'm also excited for what may lie ahead in regards to potentially sending my baby girl Scarlet -X into Red, and paying for an upgrade. For a camera that has technology in it, that personally 15 years ago I would of said you were on crack if you told me it was going to exist. And that a company, fuck that, a group of brilliant and self less social engineers would be willing the bleed, sacrifice and support a community of creators. I would of told you were a liar, that business doesn't work that way. That no group of people can coalesce in a like minded goal to change everything. To bend and be malleable to their supporters, to give and give and give. A group of folks so passionate not just about tech and defining the bleeding edge but to support and champion their end users. I'm so fucking thankful to have fallen in love with this industry. I'm so fucking thankful that a company like RED came along in my life and made a tool that connects with me. A tool to this day, every time I fire it up I can't wait to what will come through the lens.
This is unprecedented what is happening here. It is special. It is exciting. For some it is scary and with potential risk. That's life, no certainties, no guarantees. Know that in the end what every you got in your hands to capture light should give you satisfaction, wonder, and excitement. If its a RED, be so blindingly thankful because you don't just have an incredible company that truly has your best interests but a community that has and will help you succeed in your goals.
I really appreciate everything you all do at Red and really appreciate to all whom contribute to this encyclopedia of knowledge and unwavering support called REDUSER.
I'm going to remove my lips from ass now and make just one more statement.
If you can, upgrade your cameras. Say thank you and tell everyone you meet that you are part of something special. Oh, if they don't like it or don't get it, they can kindly and respectfully f- themselves proper.
If you can't upgrade, take a step back, breath, and move on.

OK - so here's the next thing... we all send KITTENS to Jarred!!! Anyone have the phone number for the ASPCA in Irvine? ;-)

Hahahaha Brent is that you posting on Terry's account?

I have an Epic Dragon. I missed the last upgrade window due to having to move from Las Vegas to New York. When I heard an opportunity might arise for to me still get into the DSMC2, I was excited. I hope some stupid comment didn't ruin that. I am a now a New York Red owner, and I was not only looking forward to the upgrade, but very grateful for a second chance!

Not Epic-W, those that are waiting on 8K VV are going to Weapon Heliums ( if they want )

1) Had a chance to spend some time with Jarred's 8K Helium Weapon yesterday at the ASC Clubhouse. Based on monitor output, to a Sony 25" A250 OLED, the noise floor is 2 FULL STOPS lower than my Carbon Weapon Dragon. Amazeballs. I can't believe I'm writing this, but I'm actually going to have a difficult decision when I get notified for my VV Dragon cut. Mind blown.

2) Apparently lost in the fervor over upgrade paths/costs, model naming conventions and Operation; Distract Brent (all topics worthy of discussion, not hating) is the upcoming release of RED's next generation image processing tech. In journalism, it's called burying the lead. I eagerly look forward to digging into this new image reconstruction environment and plumbing the depths of years of footage.

3) Over the years RED has endured a great deal of criticism for not making "pretty pictures" as easily as some competing cameras - but they had the balls to stay the course and not resort to front end image processing techniques that couldn't be "undone". They actually trusted us to manipulate the RAW data in RGB "development" to craft the imagery that fit our creative goals. RED's perseverance in the face of considerable criticism is extraordinary. Thanks to Jim's original philosophy, Jarred's focus and Graeme's genius - each advancement in image processing technology is applicable to every R3D ever made.

4) BTW, for all you flower/gift senders out there - I gave Jim/Jarred/RedTeam 6 Premium ($150/ea) tickets to the Indy 500 a few years ago as a token of my appreciation for all they have done. Mic drop ;-)

Cheers - #19

oh man.. I'm getting excited now

...Been a few days since I peeked into this thread. Wow. Got a bit ugly there.

I just want to say that there are many of us who truly appreciate what you, and all the rest of the RED team, do for us. The continued gestures of customer loyalty and appreciation are what keeps us coming back. Not just that you guys are making the most crazy awesome cameras out there. So glad you're not like Arri, Sony or Canon.
Second this!

Epic Dragon owners should not of had this Epic-W opportunity at all, it was a courtesy just so they didnt feel left out. But obviously that courtesy was missed, abused and somehow turned into entitlement.

Its actually better for you guys now.. Since this option is removed it will free up more Epic-Ws for more SW and MG Weapon and Carbon Weapon guys... who actually deserve this upgrade... so you all win by actually getting your cameras sooner.

But make no mistake... Im done bending over.

My team has worked the last 6 months with no sleep to the point of breakdowns and tremendous strain on their families trying to catch up with the backorder situation that we got ourselves into just to do right by our customers. We are taking a massive, massive financial hit with this Epic-W discount to those that have been waiting for way too long as Scarlet-W and free sensors to the Carbon weapon guys waiting too. Just because we feel bad about making you wait.

And guess what.. pretty much every other company also makes you wait. BM had an unexpected year and a half on their last camera, Arri's SXT is still an unexpected year and a half wait, list goes on. We are offering shit no other company would even think about. And some of you still bitch and complain.

So anyone that thinks that we are mistreating you and not doing our best to help you all.. please, please, please sell your cameras and go buy something else.

Jarred, I fuckin love all you guys at Red. You give me the tools to do what I love in life, I recognize all of what you say above, and am incredibly grateful to the ENTIRE team over their for it all; and the discounted offers, C'mon! Just crazy good! This is all the reason I feel MORE than comfortable investing in Red, and well shit giving you guys all the money necessary to keep my equipment, fuck up to date, but WAY ahead of the curve. My investment is safer that in any other product on the market because if your business model, so I just want to thank you all for that and all your hard work. :cornut:

^^ AMEN brother! This x 1000000 - kudos RED! Life's too short to complain right - let's all be happy with great tech in our hands.
