  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The EPIC/SCARLET DRAGON to WEAPON Mg or CF path has been around since April 2015. And as Jarred has said countless times, "all good things come to an end." Come Oct 11, we will cease upgrades to WEAPON Mg. If you are not in WIP by then, you can apply your deposit to what other offers are out there for your camera class.

IMHO, the two best deals we had were the old RED ONE trade in where you got full credit for your RED ONE against en EPIC-M package. And the WEAPON Mg upgrade... If I were a WEAPON Mg upgrader, I would be pretty happy where I sit regardless of what any one else's paths are.

Put yourself in our shoes for a second. Come Oct 11, here EVERY. SINGLE. CAMERA. OWNER. has something at the table for them*. SCARLET-W paid deposit folks as well. And RAVEN folks have had opportunity to go to SCARLET-W for awhile. Just about every darn person with skin the game has something for them to ponder. We have spent months and months discussing what seemed "fair" to each faction. "If we do x, that is great for the y group, but sucks for the z. Ok, let's start over..." This is why this will be the final net we cast. If you are not in a DSMC2 brain, this is your last chance to parley your existing camera to get into DSMC2 for a special price.

And while we are fully aware we won't please everyone.... Before you type that "you are screwing me" post, focus on what you have been offered to date and what is on the table on Oct 11 and I think you will see we have been pretty generous along the way. And with Oct 11 offers, Jarred is being extremely so. I lost a few arguments along the way the past few months, and you have Jarred to thank for where things netted out.

* If you never did a formal transfer of ownership, folks, do it now. On Oct 11, you don't want to log on to RED.com and not be eligible for an upgrade for a camera you have in your possession....

I'm trying to get through all 30 new pages of info. But can we know what the "deposit" cost will be from Epic Dragon to Epic-W so that even if we can't afford the full upgrade we can get a place in line potentially?

The hate doesn't bother me anymore.. Ive owned user communities for long before RED so I know that there are just some unhappy people out there and the hate has really nothing to do with whatever they are hating on and more of a reflection of the unhappiness with themselves or whatever is going on in their own lives. It is actually an interesting study of sociology.

That said.. I do know that some of my employees don't understand the above and they do read some of the drama and do get bummed out because I honestly can tell you nobody works harder for the customer than we do.

The good thing is that there is way more of you guys that do appreciate what we are trying to do here... We love what we do and we love making things for our customers to go out and create incredible things. We love the passion and excitement you all have. That's why we are here.

There is a treasure hunt of info in this insane 200 page thread so can I sum up what we know so far?

Specs and Pricing:

Weapon Helium = Same specs as Stormtrooper 8K but Black instead of White. 8k slightly bigger than S35, 8k 60fps frame rate. $49,000 new

Epic W = 8K S35 unknown sensor size, unknown frame rate. I assume 8K at 24fps at lower bitrate than Weapon . I hope same frame rates and bitrate at 6K as Weapon MG Dragon 6k. $30,000 new

Upgrade Options:

Epic Dragon / Scarlet Dragon / Epic-MX / Scarlet-MX / Red One = $17,500 Upgrade to Epic-W

Scarlet-W already delivered or deposit = $10,000 Upgrade to Epic - W

Weapon MG = $9500 Upgrade to Epic - W or $15,000 upgrade to Weapon Healium

Carbon Weapon 6k owners = $6000(?) Upgrade to Weapon Helium

Carbon Weapon 6K owners with Dragon VV deposit = $0 upgrade to Helium 8K

Is it really that much to jump up for Epic Dragon owners? And it's the same across the board for way less expensive cameras?
 
So what I don't understand right now is if you own a red epic dragon camera right now and want to step up to epic-w it will be a bit more than 10K, maybe 12-13k or more
If you Place a deposit on a scarlet-w before oct. 11th the upgrade from there to epic-w will be 10k available for one day
So if I get it right if you own an epic dragon it makes more sense to sell this camera, get in the line for scarlet-w and upgrade to epic-w just from the financial side, or do I miss something?
The only advantage Is that you are first in the line going from epic-dragon to epic-w?
Maybe I miss an important point on these thoughts, if so please let me know.

many of the costs are speculation, but it the generosity is mind bending if you run the numbers. if jarred called me and said i could jump to epic-w for 17.5, i would pay on the spot. thats an incredible deal for an epic-D owner imo.

I'm not disagreeing with the overall value. I'm more so curious if the cost is the same for say a Scarlet MX owner. Obviously that's an insanely good deal.

I'm still curious, is the only option moving up if you're an Epic Dragon owner? I'd love to get into DSMC-2, but that jump might be outside my reach. I'd like to see some way for Epic Dragon's or other cameras have a way to get into Scarlet-W's personally. Thats the camera I'd truly want to get! Obviously it'd still cost something since RED has to make a buck, but the speculated $17.5 grand is a ton of money to some even if the value is obviously there.
 
i understand what you mean now, jeffrey. I'm certain that there's very robust rationale behind the curtain. and if you don't want to move up, you can always get a s-w for 10k, and you'd have 2 cameras!
 
I'm very new to this community (haven't received S-W yet) but it already feels like a journey having switched from Raven to S-W many months ago to being offered this extremely generous upgrade offer to Epic-W. I am highly considering the upgrade but probably won't be able to shell out the extra 10k for another 6 months. Could I possibly make the deposit to E-W and delay my allocation until I have a the funds available? I hate to pass up on such a generous offer.. Regardless RED has a new life time customer! Cheers everyone!
 
10months and Just waiting it out.. (Grateful for the loaner tho) Hoping my wife 2 be don't spend all my money on this wedding and won't be able to get that extra up grade.. lol ..

Jarred: i know the forums are full of vocal minorities but as you know rest assured that there are huge number of people quietly and deeply thankful for everything you guys have done and are doing. I am jumping sides, i have stacks of cameras and equipment and i decided the time was right to switch eco-systems. And then whilst happily waiting for the S-W (deep in vfx and post production so didn't mind waiting) the E-W pops up which I recognise as an enormously generous gesture, which frankly you guys never had to do either.

You guys are trying to make sense of this again :)

if you are not a waiting scarlet-w owner then you need to stop comparing what they are getting vs everything else. They are getting something special because they have been suffering while all you with cameras are out shooting.

Just from a dollar perspective If epic-w interests you it's cheaper to buy Scarlet W and then switch to Epic-W rather than just buying a new Epic-W. That's going against the spirit of the deal but we aren't going to stop you.

Normally we would just wait till announcement day and say " if you have a Scarlet W on order from yesterday or before you can upgrade " to avoid that price discrepancy but in this case I feel like giving you guys a heads up on what's going on so you can be prepared is a better advantage to you than trying to artificially block the "cheaters" from taking advantage of us.

Sounds like I should just sell my Epic Dragon and go to a Scarlet-W deposit!

That's what I thought.
But does that makes sense for RED to get so many more people in this line now just to switch to epic-w.
Not sure what to do owning an epic Dragon and wanting to get to dsmc2 system in the best and not too expensive way.
In fact I would like to go straight up from epic dragon to epic-w at a good price point without thinking about selling the Camera First but maybe it's the way to go.
It's still cool to have those informations and options but it doesn't make it easier to decide.
Should we stay with our dragons and Upgrade or get to the other queue if epic-w Is the final destination?

I said a couple of weeks ago or so, that Scarlet W waiting folks will get some love. That Jarred will pull another card under the sleeves.... But he, instead, went crazy and gave love to ALL RED USERS!!! So we need to be thankful and grateful for this... And I was a scarlet W waiting, and got lucky for a freebie upgrade to Weapon MG. Now, I am so happy EVERYONE is LUCKY as I am!!! Specially I am so happy Scarlet W that waited until now are gonna get BIG LOVE for the waiting. I suffered like then before I had a film to make, and made it because RED was generous and gave me a Loaner as well... But we are all Lucky folks for being here with RED Family in the first place! I just got lucky before hand...

Don't miss this train... This is not normal what RED is doing... Jarred and Brent!

Will Brent be okay with you telling us:
1 - how much will we need to put down as a deposite to get in line for Epic-X to Epic-W
2 - what's the time window to put down this deposite after Oct. 11th (24 hours, or few weeks, till Dec.31st for exemple)
?
