Well either they have finally woken up to the fact that this is the future (with their camera T-head configuration which sounds 'modular' to me) ...

The T-head configuration has been available for the Sony F950 for at least 7 years now.

Such a significant jump in resolution strikes me that they really didn't believe the crap they were saying a few years ago about higher res isn't necessarily a good thing. I would hope they are playing catch up to RED and that RED really do have enough to destroy the competition.

I don't know where you got that impression. Sony has been talking about 4K for a long, long time. They released the first commercial 4K projectors a number of years ago. And I really don't see them playing catch up, I see them going a different path and offering a solid, competitive product.

I have to admit that I'm a bit troubled and bothered by all of this "war" and "attack" and "destroy" kind of talk here, even when it comes from Jim. I think being competitive in business is great, it spurs innovation and helps consumers get better products much quicker by eliminating complacency. But healthy competition is not "war," and using those kind of metaphors is, to me, pretty inappropriate in a world that has enough uncalled for, nationalistic and religiously motivated violence already. To paraphrase Steve Jobs - someone who is widely admired here and elsewhere - everyone else doesn't have to lose for Red to win. It's a big world with different needs and different tastes. I like Red's products and what they bring to the table very, very much. I don't like "war," or images of holding guns to people's heads. Show me a good product with great value and I'm in. Start hurling threats and talking about "war" and I have a very different reaction. And I hope (and believe) I'm not alone in that view.

Looking through various company histories, there really are a couple of notable examples (Intergraph comes to mind). Even if you have some of the most promising technologies on the planet and IP, if (for example) something of the scale of the Win-tell juggernaught is minded to fuck with you, you pretty much stay fucked, or are forced to retreat from an area that was originally “yours”.

The sad reality is, if things get nasty and the teams of Lawyers need to get involved, you are then totally mired in one of the most miserable battles imaginable (think WWI). Absolutely soul destroying, you will spend many millions of dollars and several years just to determine which state the case should be tried in (Bastards…).

I personally thought that the initial attempts that the SONY marketing guys made to introduce the idea of the Q 67 (for example) was a little dodgy/almost reprehensible (very misleading)… These guys have massive patent portfolios if they are minded to do so they can haul you in to court and try to sue you for using a low level technology that you didn’t even know that you were using that they happen to own… that everybody else is using for free. It gets very ugly.


The Red family of products are amazing, and has been said many times before, folks that need and want to buy RED will; Jim has indeed (in my opinion brought into existence a true Digital Cinema Camera) and he is taking that “space” very well.

The reality is that you can’t operate in vacuum no matter how many products that you deliver to offer a complete workflow solution. Like it or not you/we are in a larger “technocratic” eco system. You just can’t get around that. I.e. you still have to do business with these guys (i.e. your competitors). There are many examples of competitors basically benefiting from cross licensed technologies and so on. I.e. if you have a stake in your competitor’s company, it’s not always a bad thing… [Things seem to be presented in rather black and white terms].

Roosevelt described his style of foreign policy as "the exercise of intelligent forethought and of decisive action sufficiently far in advance of any likely crisis".
This seems to be a better approach (I think).

Even if your competitors pick up the phone and say “Dude… we are going to fucking burry you”, there are ways to deal with that. SONY et al will have the good sense not to fuck with RED… (I hope)…

I think with RED equipment in hand it’s better to act like the cat that’s got the cream, rather than say FUCK SONY! (for example). (Unless SONY are really trying to fuck with you...

Maybe think of this more like Sun Tzu's The Art of War, where "war" is really just a euphemism for strategy. It'll calm you down. :001_smile:

I've been following since late 2008 and have learned so much from keeping up on the latest news. I truly believe and trust in the philosophy of RED. Just from Jim and the rest of the RED army being so personable with their customers and future customers has really sold me on their vision. I'm looking forward to becoming a lifetime customer and supporter of RED.

Thanks to Jim and the RED army for making it possible for the little guys to roll with the big dogs. This is a major revolution.

I hear you on this and it has been talked about a lot (remember the bomb evf naming controversy). I think this is more in the spirit of being at war with your parents rather than a shoot people in the head executioner style thing.

Jim can defend himself but I also read the words I LOVE SONY in one of his other posts, completely acknowleding what their public commitment (with products on the orizon) is. Jim's war is clearly against 1080P for consumers and on that front, the SONY announcements help in the "war" against 1080.

I'm reading this as a passionate CEO's battlecry. This seems to be RED's version of "think different" Apple had Gandhi in their ads, I doubt we will ever see that approach from RED, but things change.

To be honest that without Sony (4K projector) it was not possible to get RED ONE first 4K footage presented (RED ONE the first digital 4K camera on the market).

I am glad for you Jim. It genuinely makes me happy to see you happy. And I knew you were stalking up a little --not in spite of the customer, but for us! The second a 'big-dog' corporation leaps ahead of RED, the second we are forced back on the dreaded tech-drip. But props to Sony for being the solid second in 4k. That home-projector sounds like a MAJOR push. Now I really can't wait to see RED's projector, and it's price! 4k is gonna start moving fast now!

EPIC M/X has a sensor that resolves just over a true 2k resolution but in camera "over-samples or renders" 5k. this is 2.5x the amount of resolution gain with "over-sampleing"

this truly indicates that RED is already far superior in its Software integration with is firmware and that RED knows how to fully realize in their products the full extent of their firmware without holding back anything the camera is safely capable of.

this excites me knowing that we are looking at 3 or 4 more sensor versions from RED and at least 2 more cameras to be released very soon!

Monstro i feel is going to be at least if not well over a true 4k sensor that RED will most likely build an amazing and superior feature set to accommodate.

The original RED One Mysterium sensor was 4K and resolves to about 3.2K after debayering.

There's no up-rezzing of any kind going on.
