  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The times we love...

Bloody hell Jim, I'm going to have to remember to put my gear on before reading your posts if you keep this up!

As for history... everyone else in the movie business might do well to remember.... 'You do not make history, you can only hope to survive it"

Jim's manner of speech is a style. I would not take it too literally or be too quick to criticize.

My taste is not always personally aligned with RED's aesthetic choices, which are masculine in the extreme. But one thing that I truly appreciate is that they have a clearly defined aesthetic to everything they do. It is consistent. It is recognizable. It is RED. You know what you are getting.
 
I've never used or even seen a RED camera in the flesh, but have been following the company for 4 years now and i for one know the future when i see it, and it has RED written all over it. Can't wait for Scarlet, what i hope to be my first RED camera!! Blessings to you and the team Jim!! These are exciting times indeed!!!

RED has been making history ever since it was just twinkle in Jim's eye.

We wouldn't be where we are today, and neither would any of those big dogs, if it wasn't for Jim and everyone at RED pushing the envelope.

Believe me when I tell you that the other guys are going to have to start running to keep up with us. A 14" wide camera isn't going to keep pace. Expect major leaps from us. And soon.

Love the attitude! Challenge on!! It does 72fps @ 4K and 120fps @ 2K and costs USD 65,000...I mean...RED ONE is still leading the 4K race at USD 25,000 hehehe

Engadget is reporting- "During the presentation Sony showed a 4K clip from its upcoming Spiderman flick on a VPL-VW1000ES that looked every bit as beautiful as you might imagine."

hmmmm, I wonder whose camera this film is being shot on? I surely hope that Sony is not stupid enough to try to claim they were the ones that pushed 4k, that would be laughable at best.

I understand your point, but Sony is absolutely the company that has pushed 4K exhibition. And by the description you offered, this was a demonstration of 4K projection. Besides, Spider Man happens to be a Sony picture. So I don't know why you would have a problem with this.

I was just echoing Jim's comment here about how the "other guys" might try to piggy back off of RED's development for their own benefit. Of course, Sony's 4k projector lineup has dominated the industry but I don't think it's out of place to suggest that Sony is going to push 4k as the next big thing to consumers and try to best RED in this war.

Ok I’ve cooled down a bit… (I’m from Europe originally, I’m just REALLY anti war (in spite of working in a military and aerospace sector; the things that we innovate are designed to save lives; my father WAS brought up in a totalitarian regime, no matter how you skin this cat WAR is never cool. No matter what…))

The Art of War…

THAT’s EXACTLY THE POINT I DON’T SEE THE STRATEGIC BENEFIT?

Jim is a very good business man, I just don’t see the logic?

It’s been a few years since I’ve read the art of war. But I’m pretty sure that the basic concept of don’t get into a war in the first place if you don’t need to is pretty fundamental. (The Vietnamese war didn’t work out very well for the US). Before we go over the cliff like lemmings it would good to know why first?

Clearly something has got Jim’s goat (perhaps he can’t talk about) that has one pushing this (minimally …) very defensive set of ideas.

I have infinite respect for RED, but somehow with the newer developments and the fact that the EPIC has RED in the early days of what seems like a very established position, I thought somehow that we have moved beyond all of this?

I don’t know if this was written in an odd moment or if there really is something behind this or not?

This is what was actually written:

I’m all for defending something that technically makes sense but the abject need to spoil for a more than just a scrap tells me that there is a lot more going on behind the scenes, and we are being “prepped” for what Jim describes as “WAR” (His words). I would kinda like to know why??? I don’t think this is an utterly stupid question. I’m not taking what he says literally (even though the words as such don’t sit well with me, it’s more OK..what’s really going on?)

I suspect it might have more to do with Jim wanting to move into the broadcast/consumer sector and perhaps Sony etc al's (home markets). If the S-3d methods that RED propose make technical sense then we will back that up 100%. All I can say is that I speculate, and that’s a huge speculation that the big 3 have made it clear that they are not going to make it easy for Jim/RED?

I'm sure in the next few months things will become more clear (I hope)...

I already wrote: Am I the only one who is really bothered by all these "battle", "fight" and "war" metaphors? -- when I read through and finally found your Post on page 9. I'm glad and absoloutly with you on that.
 
If I would have said "We are at war with conventional thinking"... would you have reacted the same?

this truly indicates that RED is already far superior in its Software integration with is firmware and that RED knows how to fully realize in their products the full extent of their firmware without holding back anything the camera is safely capable of.

this excites me knowing that we are looking at 3 or 4 more sensor versions from RED and at least 2 more cameras to be released very soon!

Monstro i feel is going to be at least if not well over a true 4k sensor that RED will most likely build an amazing and superior feature set to accommodate.

My initial thoughts were that this post is a blatant troll. But I'm not too sure... You might want to re-check your facts there and try again. ...In regards to both the F65 and RED One / EPIC.

First it sounds like you're confusing "over-sampling" with "up-scaling". Secondly, neither the F65, nor any RED cameras do up-scaling. And I don't know where you came up with the "resolves just over true 2k resolution". RED One and EPIC both resolve 3.2K+ in 4K mode and EPIC is 4.4K+ when shooting 5K. A good resolution chart and someone who knows how to focus a lens can show you this.

The 3K Scarlet resolves over 2K...

To be honest that would have peaked my interest a hell of lot more (really).

…that actually means something (close to my heart, if I’m being totally honest)
