  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Three Axis Gimbal Thread

Hi Everyone. These Gimbal's are all very tempting. As much as I would love to own one so that I can get very good at using one I feel that after the novelty of it wore off I would feel like I wouldn't use it enough to justify the investment when there is always something else you must buy coming out all the time. I was wondering once these get out into the marketplace what you all expected the rental price of these to be say for 3 days or a week at a time? I am thinking that I would be better off renting one when needed and maybe a week is enough to experiment and actually use in a production.

It really depends on price IMO. $15K for a Movi and you really need to be able to rent it out and look out for your ROI.

But, at the price point of some of the others (like the BeSteady4 for example), it becomes a handy tool that gives you a more options... think about doing tracking/dolly shots just by walking (rather than having to set up track). It's this type of use that (I think) will end up making these gimbals useful - not the crazy run around stuff we keep seeing.

Has anybody tried this yet?

I just found some very interesting clips you really need to see:

Although it's amateur footage, it's still good enough to make the case for a brushless gimbal on a steadycam like stabilizer. So here's what I'd like you to try: Put a brushless gimbal on a steadycam rig, shoot some footage, and post it on Youtube.

You're gonna love what you see and so will everybody else.

Let me know when the link is up. I can't wait to see it.

I found this interview in newsshooter http://vimeo.com/74625131

It seems the Defy G5 is for smaller cameras with 5 pounds weight and they will soon launch the G10 for heavier cameras like epic. The competition is becoming intense. :)
In that video, I found they are using the Redrock micro remote wireless system. And those guys are all praise for it.

I am thinking how hard will it be to handhold the entire combo and shoot. Looks like it is time to hit the gym to strengthen arms and back?
Also, am wondering what will be the total cost of acquiring a gimbal, wireless follow focus blah blah blah so that I can budget for the entire thing.

its pretty simple, get a gym weight of 10kg and hold it 500-700mm away from your body right in front of you. See how long you can last running or walking this way, and also think that you will also need to somehow control it. :):emote_22_yikes:

Unfortunately this is not the only thing I would worry about , if I was looking at a reliable professional tool. But its a good test.

Best regards

I just spoke with Guffe Funck of Swedish Chameleon about their SC: Gravity.
Sounds really promising! They'll start producing them at the end of November! I can't wait :)

Gimbal + Easy Rig - that's the winning solution.

Anyone else following the progress of the Monkey-Gimbal? I've been speaking with Darek, the inventor, and his stabilizer looks impressive.

Hi all,

Finally got my hands on the Movi at a demo at CVP in London last week. Have to say I'm massively impressed with it. For my needs it's very expensive but the software and the ease of selecting different levels of damping for different effects was briliant. Also weight-wise it didn't seem any worse than my regular handheld rig.

Do any of the rival systems have such easy to use software and such extended levels of control? I'd love to go for one of these cheaper units but from what I've heard so far I think maybe I've been spoiled by the slick UI from freefly.

I ended up on the group buy for Besteady4... here's a link to the BS1 (smaller camera version) manual - http://www.besteady.pro/besteady-one-quick-start-guide/ and their FB page - https://www.facebook.com/besteadyhome

No idea on the other systems... I guess we'll start to see more over the next few months.

We've got a custom build stabilizer for the Epic. We've been testing it a bunch lately. We've tried mounting it various ways to a Steadicam arm, and hand holding it etc. The real solution I think is a long extension (9") Easyrig. We're ordering one now. It's ok doing a few shots in a row by hand, but to get the camera to eye level, it puts the operator in a pretty stressed position. I can't imagine anyone doing take after take, at eye level, all day long, and not having some sort of support. Has anyone else gone the Easyrig route?

I am getting quite interested in checking something out. Just watched the latest FXPHD DOP class on Movi and alternatives and its now got me curious.
I would also be interested if there was any other alternatives available in the UK or other. Seems like a lot of kits available from China, be curios as to how easy they are to assemble if anyone has done it.

Andrew

I was thinking that too Andrew, but having seen how well put together the Movi is I'd be wary of the real budget options. That said the Besteady offering Andy posted to looks very solid indeed, and at a fraction of the Movi's price.

Well i was impresses with what they had done over at FXPHD, there budget options looked very good. I am interested in the Besteady also.

A.
