  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Speed Racer; puts wheels on your Clutch...

I'll take one. This looks awesome!

Now we got the first batch back from the anodizer.. Here is a pic of a complete set. Minus wheels, carbon 19mm rod and red wing nuts (that included in the deal bellow) . Price now also lowered across the board.

Biggest front wheel diameter is 76mm, but since some has asked to use it with bigger rollerblade wheels we can custom fit them to basically any size for the same price.

Clutch setup: 570USD + shipping
including:
2 x front wheel handles
1x 19mm wheel clamp
Back support 19mm rod clamp.
3 wheels (choose between small black or big green)
Carbon fiber rod.
Screws for the above.

We got some orders with small black wheels so I figure I post some pix of them as well. When testing those I have to say I do not see feel/see any noticeable difference in friction etc but those are off course more light weight and more discrete (not showing in refections etc)

Sadly there are no quality skate wheels that are "all black" since all skate brands that cares for quality always make sure to put on thier graphics. So these wheels got some gray graphics one one side. It's something that can be removed if wanted.

Nice Mark,
Now you need to post some camera moves. I found it to move even smother the heavier the camera is. We did some tests with fully equipped epic with quad and XL volts and such then it just needs a slight push and it moves perfectly on nice arcs over the floor. Like your wheels will look for a slim option like that.

Regarding the back wheel thing it's much better if you adjust the back support so that the back rod is vertical then it will not swivel on the rod when a heavy camera comes onboard. And you can still get it down as low.

Björn,

I did try it a couple hours ago, thought I haven't taken any images with the camera yet. Put the camera body on the beast and it was even smoother with the added weight. I'm leaving the wheels installed, they're out of the way sufficiently that when it's collapsed, it's the same size as before, so no point taking them off. I'll try the vertical position next time around for the back wheel, I agree, it should roll even better. Really seems like the Clutch was made for this dual purpose role.

We do the same the wheels stays on. Just had to cut out some of the foam in the RED case lining and it fits perfect.

Here is a slightly different config with 4x back wheels... this is also a nice packshot dolly that fits into the palm of your hand and turns the quick plate into a super sturdy straight moving dolly...

Really like this concept, even better than having to use the clutch, for as you say a backpack type of getup. It needs a cross bar or some way of making the wheels able to roll the camera sideways. How about a new clamp that could repurpose the front wheels from the clutch that would screw into them allowing for change of direction?

To me this option does not have even half the possibilities as the "speed racer" since that allows you to move in any direction and also make perfect arc's if wanted. Also, whats even more important... The speed racer lets you set the tilt angle of the camera. So if you have a clutch. The 3 wheel speed racer setup is so much nicer than those four.

But then again... this can be set into so many things. take two long rods. put 4 wheels on. put a small tripod head on the rod mount, put your camera on the tripod head... viola you got a small low rider dolly on skate wheels. then you can roll by and pan at the same time...

It might sound strange but due the quite heavy weight of the epic and the robustness of the clutch it just moves like that was what it was built to do, it feels like it's on tracks. I know that on the pictures here it all looks a bit flimsy, but when pushing it over the table/floor etc it just behaves like a large dolly or such.

I think Red should implement it on their clutch and also make their wheel handle so that it had ball bearings and a break, making it into a super multi purpose wheel handle thingy.

Nice thinking Björn... ;)

So if you just get the 4 clamps, then you can put in any size Skate wheels you like?

I think I know what you are thinking Ketch. But that only goes to a certain extend. So no, you can not use the wheels from your truck and put them there.... :)
