  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Scarlet Path That Jarred Mentioned...

Ok @5k. Fine, understandable. I expect higher fps and compression, same level as RAVEN, maybe slightly higher.

Same level would be disappointing and would mean a crippled and limited camera again. It has to make 5k shine like Raven makes 4k shine. It means better datarate. Limiting the camera to 5k is a smart move, they can unleash the whole power @5k without hurting the bigger brothers.

It has to be a 6K sensor if you are upgrading as that is what we have already.

They always stated that everything changes. Shooting 5kFF @96fps 12:1 would make me forget about 6k @12fps in a second.

5k super 35 here I come! Finally delivering a true 4k on a Scarlet will be awesome. This sounds perfect. Clear separation from raven in the form of interchangeable mounts and OLPF's, as well as weapon at 6 & 8k and even the current Epic Dragon managing 6k.
Hopefully the Scarlet-W it'll do 5k at the same, better or at least similar compression ratios to 4.5k on Raven. I'd expect so. So excited for this camera!!! This is the one I've been waiting for... Except inbuilt ND's lol. Never fully satisfied, I imagine RED isn't either though.

I'm going from "5k" scarlet mx to raven at 4.5k ws. And I think it is a huge upgrade. Scarlet Weapon is going to fit perfect in between raven and weapon at 5k. Maybe 5.5k widescreen, 5k 120fps, 5k @ 3:1, interchangeable mounts and olpf, dscm2. Now what is the price?

...Being a bayer pattern sensor the scarlet at 4k resolves approximately 3.2k worth of resolution. 5k resolves approximately 4k as resolution is lost in the debayer/filter. This is why the monochrome versions resolve more detail.

That's an interesting point, and gives me continued hope for more than 5K from the non-Monochrome Scarlet-W, even if it's just 6K at less than 24fps like it is on the current Scarlet Dragon. The Monochrome Weapon, being a whole new camera, can make enough use of a new 5k sized sensor to be worthwhile in its own right. But as Maik and others were saying, it makes some sense to think (or hope) the 'regular' Scarlet-W could be based on the current-sized, bayer-filtered 6K Dragon sensor.

Not sure why a sensor smaller than 6K is being discussed in the Scarlet-W. I think it is fair to assume that the upgrade from Scarlet Dragon will involve transplanting the 6K Dragon sensor that is already in the "old" DSMC1 body to the new DSMC2 Weapon body. It is conceivable, but not likely (IMO), that the operation of the 6K could be completely eliminated (maybe used for look around only) or a new sensor could be used (effectively making the "upgrade" into a Trad-in"), but why do that?

I agree with those that suggest the 6K capabilities may be very limited (as they are now) but I don't see the Scarlet-W as being a 5K only camera.

Because they will increase the datarate like they did in the Raven and probably more than the Raven. And even the datarate of the raven would permit to shoot 6k @24fps 6:1 with a 6k sensor (even 6kFF @75fps 16:1). Before, it was convenient, the datarate in the scarlet dragon doesn't permit more than 12fps. I guess it's about strategy and cohabitation with the Epic and Weapon. I can't imagine that they will put 6k @24fps and HFR in the scarlet, and I can't imagine that they will put a 6k sensor, with enough power to use it for motion, and limit it to 12fps on purpose. The most logical solution would be to separate clearly each model, and offer the maximum they can for each resolution without limitations.
The picture of the scarlet-W monochrome shows clearly 5k written on the body, and "Scarlet" too. That would be a mess to have a Raven @4.5k, a monochrome scarlet @5k, another one @6k, different weapons @6k and 8k. And like for the Raven I'm sure they have many cuts of the sensors that were not good enough for 6k or 8k but good enough for 5k.

Any other Epic X Dragon users hopeful of this option?

Epic-D to Scarlet-W? Absolutely NO WAY

Down the long road I'd be tempted by a limited time brain trade-in deal for Epic-D to Weapon-MG brain.

May be easier/cheaper to sell an Epic-D and buy a Weapon-MG after upgrades are done and it's available for sale directly.

I'm inclined to suggest to Epic Dragon owners to keep it AND get the Standard OLPF (and maybe switch back to the 1.0 front fan)
Thats what I'm doing and I'm completely satisfied.

The "conspiracy theories" of RED hobbling the technology in any of it's cameras abound here and I have never found it credible. It is not RED's way. So, I am quite skeptical that the level of capabilities in the Scarlet-W will be based on protecting the other Weapon models in the line. There has always been plenty of reasons to go "up the line" with RED.

That said, I don't see where you address my question/point. My Scarlet Dragon already has a 6K sensor. When I go to upgrade it - and, yes, I am assuming I will be able to, based on all of Jarred's previous posts - then what will become of that extra 1K of sensor width? Are you suggesting they will replace my sensor completely (with 5K) or that it will simply be unable to record or will act as look around or will just go dark? Remember, the Weapon line has a Dragon sensor placed into a DSMC2 body with advanced electronics. It is not a new sensor.

Well of course I'm sure of nothing. My opinion is just based on the picture of the 5k Scarlet-W monochrome. I personally think they will replace the sensor (after all they will replace the whole body and electronic). There is all the current scarlet which will be upgraded but they will probably sell a lot of new ones and it seems that making bigger sensors means "more expensive" and "more complex". They are making a 6000$ Raven with a Weapon body, and twice the power of the 15000$ scarlet dragon, I'm not sure the price difference is just about interchangeable OLPF and mount, making 6k sensors must be really more expensive than making the Raven's 4.5k sensor. And it's not about hobbling the technology, it's about making a clear lineup without crossovers. Imagine if they make a cheaper 5k Scarlet-W because of a cheaper sensor, with the Epic power, of course a few people will be pissed off but much more will be more than happy with that and I'm sure they will sell a lot. I bet that the majority of scarlet owners never use 6k at all. I personally have still cameras which are much more convenient to make stills.

If I was you I'd be online at 6pm PST and check out REDuser and NoFilmSchool around that time:

That's exactly me!

So for me, it'll be Epic Dragon until there is a new sensor after Dragon. But I say that all the time and I haven't kept a camera for more than a year for like the past 5 years, lol. I wouldn't be too surprised if I said fuck it and got a Weapon though. But I have lots of stuff to shoot on this Epic Dragon before then.

The Epic-D from Scar-D brain-for-brain upgrade deal last year was a great path for Scar-D owners (and I took it w/ no regrets).

wow! All Scarlet flavors?

If you are talking Mysterium-X, I believe only Scarlet Dragons can be upgraded. But we'll know everything in about 2 hours it seems.
