  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Reality of $4,000 for 4k

4k for 4k is a bargain, no doubt. The body alone has great value as a rental / second body / emergency backup for other shooters. So to me it's not so much to talk about, as you know others here got their camera value cut in half over night and they paid quite a bit more, and they usually also spent quite a bit on other components, paid for shipping, customs etc.

So, the camera you just bought is probably one of the few cameras delivered from a manufacturer that is actually possible to sell for more than retail. And that is the second time around that happens to the R1. As when they first came out people also where very willing to pay prime prices.

You can always contact the nearby rental shops and ask how much they are willing to pay just to have that camera body as a backup on the shelf or as a rental. I think you can strike a deal that will bring back your investment quite quickly.

Well I put in an order for an R1MX solely to use as an extra camera in rare multicamera situations. So I expect to use many of my current accessories including the SSDs, lenses, batteries, monitoring, etc. So I expect my cost would be around $4500 approx. With that $4500 I do not have to worry about matching colors among different camera types, etc. Now if I can only get a shipping confirmation...

Ditto! Except I need to buy a couple more SSD drives ;)

I am glad to See all the Replies.. I am By No Means Complaining. Just an FYI to those who have NEVER really Built up anything, CAR< BOAT< CAMERA. it's never the going to be what you initially invest, its always TONS of Stuff and $$$ in the END. I think ITs a Steal still, I figured a Budget of about 16k in the end just because I have all the other Items from Shooting the Past 4 years. Tripod , Dolly, extra Monitors, Editor, and SO on..

Some Preowned Scarlets with Canon Mount , SSD and handle are Close to what I have Spent so far. 9k or so. Still Requiring some Items. Its Close .... Still Content witht R1mx though.

Because, for the same price of a kitted R1-MX... you'd just have a brain, more or less.

Oh , Yeah for Sure, I was well Aware of it. Still not a Complaint.. Just a Ref. and After thought really.

you did know that before you bought it. didn't you ???
buy every camera you want. you will need support, lenses, accessories. and the prices are not low for this things ;-)
not only for red one, scarlet and epic.

by the way: a sachtler 20 fluid head is not as cheap as yout bt red one...
the production of a a sachtler head did never need the amount of r&d as a red one did. i think sachtler sold a lot more 20 head than red ever sold r1's.
and still the head is as expensive as on the first day...
so, is the red one cheap ore expensive ???

go out, shoot, have fun doing this and earn money instead of complaining, you have one of the best tools for that :-)
best wishes, norbert

p.s.: and don't think about having your equiment "complete" any day. you will never have all the tools you want or need. rent the tools you do not need every day...

This is So True ,,, There will always be Something new or needed.

When the deal first landed I was tempted to do a R1 buying guide such as the one I did just before Scarlet was about to arrive. The accessories needed to make a real shooting package are what always tip the scales. I know it's tempting to say you can get by with the most minimal of setups, but then a job comes along that needs those accessories you bypassed and you either have to rent them or buy them. If renting them is not an option, then you either buy them or you can't do the work.

For example, batteries. It's an area that seems like a potential place to take a shortcut. AC power only covers you for a percentage of shooting scenarios. And for those times when you don't have the ability to charge batteries you'll need a few to get you through a day. Having 1 or 2 batteries is deadly. On the R1, minimum of 4, preferably 6, and ideally 8.

One thing this thread does prove though is no matter how you look at it this allows people to get into 4K for under $15K which is really great.

The Red One is a man's camera. Look at a fully loaded R1 sitting next to a fully loaded Scarlet or Epic, and be honest on which setup looks sexier. Sure, many will complain about the weight factor, but try working with an Arri 16mm or 35mm rig! Either way, owning an R1 brain for $4k is much better than owning a R1 brain a month ago for $25k, lol...

In addition to spending too much time quarreling over whether to purchase a Scarlet or a BT R1MX, I screwed around and waited to put the funds together for a ready-to-shoot package and missed out on the deal entirely. What an idiot maneuver that was! :banghead: I've already got emails out to sellers on the RED Stuff forum but, worse case scenario, which isn't bad at all, I'll be setting aside more funds while waiting to hear what the specs are gonna be on the Scarlet's Dragon sensor. If the Scarlet's Dragon specs don't match that of the R1MX, then I'm going with the R1MX. I think of it as a win-win. Heck, I gotta tell myself something to compensate for my boneheadedness!

I also bought the R1 with SSD module and AC adapter for 3700EUR with shipping, and on top of that used:
-Optitek Nikon mount (350€)
-Cradle (300€)
-320gig Red Drive (350€)
-2x hawk woods V-lock batteries and 4-battery charger 350€ (I have to get more batteries a some point)

Now it's in usable condition and has cost me about 5000€, and that's all it will cost for now. I have plenty of manual Nikon glass. I have Chrosziel mattebox and follow focus for LWS, I'll make the lws-bracket myself. I have a SWIT hdmi/hdsdi 7" monitor. And a usable Vinten tripod.
These are all items that I have bought for my 7D and GH2, and they will work good with the R1 too.
I think this is a incredible price for the body, and if you can get accesories used, or buy 3rd party or even make some yourself, your setup won't be too much over that 4000.

Red One shoots 2K and 120fps. It is highly unlikely (expensive Dragon upgrade not withstanding) that Scarlet ever will. Also audio inputs and multiple A/V outputs on the body as standard (though admittedly you really need the ET breakout box).

R1 for $4K is a steal, regardless of the cost of the extras.

I'd take a R1MX over a Scarlet any day, been working on the R1 for years on productions and the only thing about the Scarlet I like over the R1 is the size and boot times. But to me I don't mind the extra 5 lbs and waiting a little longer for booting, having the ability like others have said for 120fps in 2k is great and ability to shoot 4.5k not to mention the much sturdier body design, connection options and one major drawback on the Scarlet I have seen already on a few shoots is overheating with some 4-5 minute takes. I don't know about others out there but I never ran into that overheating issue with the R1 out of the years of working with it.

I've been shooting on a 7D for the last 2 Years, Now just saying I have a R1 coming has already Gotten us new job offers and for the next 5 to 6 weeks until we can build our kit from scratch It will just be a 4K paperweight, but it will also be the happiest Day in the film business for me when we get that 4K paperweight. :hand:

I Do love the Specs on the One. Im definitely Investing in an Epic or Scarlet down the road.
