  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The R90

The rig is nice, BUT..... I would much rather see the Epic/Scarlet as well as the essential modules, battery mod., I/O mod., etc. up for sale on the Red Store page.

ha ha! My sentiments exactly. This rig is kind of cool, with very limited use in the things I shoot. The camera in the center of this rig though is of extreme interest and exactly what I want to see shipping soon.

I don't think DSMC development is being slowed down by accessory development, I'd imagine there are enough people at Red for multiple simultaneous projects.

More likely than not you are of course correct. I'm not sure they have enough resources to run every single thing in parallel, but I am sure they have their eye on the key priorities like getting the baseline Red Epic sussed out and ready to ship. Otherwise, they would be idiots, and they are definitely not idiots.

enough teasing...

Just get these puppies (EPICS) out to us now!!!!!

I've had enough!
It's driving me nuts all this waiting... waiting waiting...

I know...RED are waiting to get all of these MX chipped upgrades get done..., theeeeeeeeeen release the Epic..

Thats my conspiracy theory for the day. :)

He he. At the rate things are going, we'll be able to buy a brand new RED One with the MX sensor pre-installed before the Epic ships...

Shipping Epic will get MX2 revision (with rated "native" @ ISO 1000) plus you'll get also HDRx as a nice (maybe Christmas) present.

FACT OR RUMOR ?

Crystal Ball Fortune Teller.

It deeply undermines my confidence in Red if they use Nikon lenses instead of Canon.
Real pro uses Canon not Nikon.
R90 is still gear. Should not try to be motion gear. (it might have occasional use)
Keep it simple. No center axis, no motor. Keep it light, simple and low cost. It is brilliant as still equipment. There are enough gear out there to make rotation images for motion footage. (when you rotate the image, most often you need more than 90 degree anyway.)

Really? Did you really just say that? RED posted the image/clip showing a Canon lens mounted on the camera... That aside, Nikon makes a lot of fine glass. Don't ignore it... A real pro uses Nikon, Canon and many more...

First I'll say, the R90 looks great for its intended purpose.

Second, I think a lot of people here are assuming that the requests for centered optical axis has to do only with motion and creating rotation images. Funny thing is, I would actually want the centered axis mostly for stills purposes. The R90 is not motorized, it only rolls to one side, it's not really for motion in the sense of creating rolling camera shots. There are indeed other solutions out there for that.

Any still photographer who shoots a lot of composites (for still or motion) or shoots for FX plates will appreciate a centered axis ability.

That said, I understand the R90 is not for that purpose. Even for use within a non-motion application, with manual operation, only rotating to one side, etc.. it would have to grow significantly larger to accommodate various camera configurations. Not that we know the anticipated price point of the R90, but I'm sure RED will be more than competitive there and it offers a very nice solution for stills and motion use quickly change between portrait and landscape shooting where a centered optical axis is not required. ...Right tool for the job and all that.

One would think that if a centred optical center is that important for some users it would be fairly simple to machine a sliding base plate which accounts for the distance of horizontal shift in a regular config.

Not sure if there would be an easy way to account for any vertical shift (other than a raising the tripod.)

What is the purpose of this rig? To turn the camera on its side?

When would someone need a motor controlled rig like this to tilt the camera, as opposed to a tripod head that tilts?
