  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The R90

What if the side handle grip were removed and a different mounting bracket for the camera brain were used?

Yes Jeff, that was the first thing i thought, too.

Here is, how it would look:

As Jarred points out:
Balanced weight distribution is much more important ( IMHO ).

This is critical.

... However, just thinking of a few cool tricks that can be done if maintaining the optical axis is possible.

I totally agree with you - right on the spot. The kinetic energy in the moving image is AWESOME, when having the possibility to rotate around a spot in the image, with that spot fixed on the screen.

So for kick starting, it would be intriguing to do it with the "fixation in the image center" ...

But as Jarred points out:
This is manual, no motors.

Here we go. I was under the impression, that thing is moving (as in self powered).

Lets make no mistake, this is no trivial task.
The dynamics and tensions on the material in a moving rig, with heavy lenses and batteries are very, very strong.

Its one thing to move the stuff around in photoshop, its another to build a rig stable enough, that has the right powerful stepper motors and transmissions, to move that thing smooth and in controllable micro steps ... if one is so inclined to use it in motion ...

In my post on this tread about R90 (click here) I was asking a question exactly how it is shown at the pictures below:

How you could make a sort of Dutch Angle Camera support to achieve the optic always stays in the center point axis?

One of the answers can be found at the pictures below that have presentation of an idea purpose only and of course they are also far from a perfect presentation.

Please have a look:

center_axis_01.jpg

No rotation @ 0° and the optic always stays in the center point axis.

center_axis_02.jpg

Rotated to 90° right where the optic can always stay in the center point axis.

center_axis_03.jpg

Rotated to 90° left where the optic can always stay in the center point axis.

That means the optic always stays in the center point axis if the camera has position at the center of the wheel as it is shown at this presentation.

Hope it helps and you've got an idea how and also in which kind of direction should be made to achieve a goal that the optic always stays in the center point axis.

Also it means that tomorrow I could put Scarlet or Epic at the center of Manfrotto Fig Rig and achieve even better result to get that the optic can always stay in the center point axis.

R90 should be re-designed in a way that Epic, Scarlet or any similar camera must be placed in the center of its theoretically full wheel circle and also can remain with its "quarter wheel" technical design solution.

Again with a great hope that everybody understands what I'm talking about

This is a fabulous idea and I want one really bad...but like all Red accessories I'm afraid it will be built to survive a nuclear holocaust and be priced accordingly.

You guys should really start making cheapo flimsier versions of your stuff for guys like me who will promise to be really gentle :)

hope not, pro gear should be able to take some pain :)

Forgive me if this was asked.

Jarred,

What aspect Ratio was that filmed in? Is (1000x700pixels) the equivalent of 4x3 full frame 35mm film (full camera negative?) 3 or 4 perf?

David

Looks like a great way get dutch angles, vert angles with out having to make as many time consuming adjustments when the camera is fully loaded with accessories. And it has a fairly small footprint.

Nice work guys

I got to see this in person yesterday - and it is mad, mad cool.

Without a doubt I will buy one for every EPIC.

In addition to an elegant way to shoot 90 degrees for fashion and green screen / VFX (we do this often to maximize resolution to subject) - in most cases it replaces the need for a TANGO HEAD -

http://www.tangohead.com/tango.html

I use swing/tango/weaver heads often, and we always rig them so the nodal point of the lens doesn't change. It's the best application of these AKS for motion. Like someone else said there are plenty of other ways to quickly re-orient the camera 90 degrees, but currently no inexpensive tango/weaver competitors.

Also, someone was worried about the lack of motors, all of the rigs mentioned above can be used manually during the shot and look really smooth with some practice and experience.

Only bad news is schedule... :-) The good news is that everything is much better than you expect.

Jim

I don't suppose that we could know what kind of delays we are looking at? Are we on track to getting Epic before the end of the year?

I'm jonesing for my EPIC fix. If I have to go around back and have Tony walk me through the secret door, I'm ok with that ... ;)

I think people are reading too much into that comment... schedule bad news was already released - since then its been all good news.

and since there is no new projected date... as Tattoo testing is a moving target... I think we all should remember... RED WANTS TO SHIP MORE THAN WE DO. It will be ready when its ready... and EPIC - X chip is in the our cameras now... and kicking ass!

Hi Ryan!

Hi Ryan!

Hi Tim! :)

I hope you're right, and that I am reading to much into it. I have loved this new sensor as the MX is a whole new beast.

Maybe. I hope you are right. But so far, the pessimists in the group have been right about ship dates, not the optimists.

I'm thinking that the worst delays are behind us. After all, Jim's comment about the schedule was followed with a smiley. I know that Epic-X is already months behind where they wanted to be. But it also seems that it's turning out much better than they had hoped.

Every day I'm hoping the next new thread in Recon will be announcing the start of Stage-2!

I would not look too much into this - I assume they have just cropped the shot for better web bandwidth use...

It seems my days of double stacking tangos for a 90* and all in between will soon be over. Thanks red, as always.

A question for Jim or Jarred. Is it possible to have a universal kinda mount in the R90 so that, with the swap out of an adaptor, you could choose light weight/non centred lens or heavier/centred lens? That would be very cool.

congrats jeff on hittin 9000 hehe. we should throw a party when u hit that magical 5 digit

Center axis is critical especially if we would want to nodal mount this for SFX and forced perspective shots. Maybe an insert plate could be made?

can we see it with a Red One mounted please!!!! pretty please!!!
