  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The post-DSLR phase starts

As camera's life circles shorten, the main investment is shifted towards lenses. With Sony's new camera you would have to start with a new system and start investing in lenses that support:
• Sony E-mount
• Sony Alpha lenses, Minolta and Konica Minolta AF lenses via adaptor
(MF only, exclude power zoom lenses/tele-converters)
All Canon, Nikon and PL mount lenses are excluded.

To make use of the electronic functions of the lenses, you would lock yourself into the Sony E-mount ecosystem.

This camera might make sense if you already have glass that fits the mount, or if you are starting from scratch and have no plans of going the RED/Canon/Nikon route.

Personally, I'd prefer a camera that lets me use existing lenses, and is more flexible.

Martin, you're a little grinch :D

Of course it is interesting for Sony users only. BUT it is a signal towards Canon. Put a DSLR in a Camcorder formfactor with decent sound recording and let consumers be happy :) The most interesting factor for me is, if it will be line-skipping as well...

Sony NEX-VG10 US$1,999.99 + AJA KiPro HDMI recorder US$3,995.00 = Total US$5.994.99 you'll get the image quality that can be equal of ALEXA and also with the highest mobility for a fraction or 10% of ALEXA's price.

The NEX line is (from what I've been told) turning into a very nice commercial success for Sony. So it seems likely that new E lenses will be coming very soon, and ought to stay affordable. There are already many adapters for using other lenses (but you lose AF obviously).

Adding a camcorder body to the line-up seems like a very good move. We can only regret the usual compromises. But if they come out with a 24/25P enabled version, and if you can plug in something like a nanoflash into it to bypass that 24Mbs AVCHD, you would end up with a very capable system.

Nanoflesh supports GOP compresion scheme and it's not a way to go.

Only ProRes 422 10 bits is appropriate available way to go via AJA KiPro.

That thing is already working with other Sony camcorders:

I believe you can do I-frame recording with the Nanoflash.
Obviously the Nanoflash's main advantage is it's reduced size and weight / the KiPro.

I'm pretty sure the cameras only output 8 bit, so using a 10 bit codec is just useless waste of disk space. At up to 288 mbits / sec, i'm pretty sure the Nano Flash compression won't be a problem compared to ProRes either - it should be visually pretty indistinguishable from uncompressed. I'm actually pretty sure it's BETTER than ProRes 4:2:2, as A) long GOP codecs are more effective generally B) data rate is not wasted on useless bits and C) it has a higher overall data rate.

Disclaimer: i haven't used or tested either one of the recorders, so take the above just as an educated guess.

Edit: reading a bit more into it, NanoFlash does both I only and Long-GOP.

What I found as interesting as the Sony was this link in a sidebar. Perhaps Nikon has some plans of their own.

Mirrorless means an EVF, which would, one assumes, mean an EVF you could focus with, unlike those dinky LCD's on the back of DSLRs now. Also the quote that they want to increase SLR sales by 80% means they're going to have to do something radical.

When I read your responses I am always reminded what kind of undertaking it is of RED to put all this into the body of a Scarlet.

Scarlet to me is only lacking a bit with the sound option. I hope they will have a RED-mic with a mount that goes directly onto the Scarlet body at some stage.

Eki ,

sorry it's only your personal "wishes" but KiPro is the best video assistant recorder in the industry...

Even Arri it uses for 35mm film:

I doubt this camera will be any good for most of us, but it signals the start of a new era.

I feel bad for Red. If they had been able to get Scarlet out sooner they could have had this market segment wrapped up for a few years since most of us would have dropped our $$'s on Scarlets already which would have locked us into Red for a while. As it stands, I don't see many potential Scarlet buyers getting this particular cam, but I'm sure more are around the corner, some of which may offer a real alternative to Scarlet.

I have no personal wishes - as said, i don't have, use, or plan to get either one of the two. And Ki may be a very cool device. No problem there.

I replied to:

Which i still do not think is true.

I can only assume you're joking.

Not really but would say from what I've seen already that the new Sony NEX-VG10 and Panasonic GH13 (hacked) delivering the same image quality as an Alexa at 1080/24p.

To repeat and say it again just for a fraction of the price.
