  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

the Oscars.... yeah....................

All due respect, but what the f* was that about some more efficient power system something or other what have you bull*.... ??? I LOVE ARRI and Alexa's 2k images are gorgeous, but seriously?! Someone please interject on my venting rampage to tell me how stupid I am and please explain why the hell that was so god damn important, so earth shattering that it would get Alexa shoved into the broadcast while so much more has happened and continues to happen, in the real world, with the whole --actual-- revolution of digital film acquisition![/rant]

hope I am not making a fool of myself after one or two tasty cold beverages in celebration of the Oscars, but PLEASE do tell my why I am so stupid to be pissed the fuck off that RED doesn't get in there but Alexa does with some power management battery gizmo that apparently will change my life and microwaves everywhere

 loved this year, hope you all had as much fun as I did, congrats to Argo and all the other talented Oscar winners and nominees

Sounds like your drunk....

in a good way.

I've missed it for the last 15 years. I usually get the "you didn't miss much" the day after anyway...
Although, I heard my good friend Mychael Danna won for best score! And a win at the Golden Globes for him too. So proud :)

The ceremony was okay. I didn't like the mix of politics and the Academy being so prominently shown (First lady announcing best picture? WTF?). As for the winners, my pic would've been Life of Pi for best film. Argo was a good film, just not that memorable. I think Jennifer Lawrence shouldn't have won best actress, that award should've gone to the "Amour" lead. As for best actor I cannot form an opinion for Lewis's performance since I haven't seen the film. But having seen both "Les Miserables" and " Flight" he must have done one heck of a job to beat both Jackman and Denzel Washington who where brilliant in their roles.

As for directing one film I really felt missing was " Flight". Not because it was shot on red but because it was a fantastic, solid and moving film and the directing was absolutely top. While Ang Lee deserved all his praise for Life of Pi, Flight is one of those underrated films that will later be looked upon as a superior film in the director's filmography by its subtle brilliance. It was an auteur film by Zemeckis- in my view, Zemekis is no lesser a director then Spielberg, for example. Love him and hope he continues to do more live action films. Forrest Gump is in my top 5 films of all time.

Also I think is fair to assume whenever there's a Tarantino film and there's Christopher Waltz in it, they should just give him the award at the beginning of the show without any fanfarre and get it over with.

And that Skyfall song with Adele's vocals is damn catchy. Even the lovely Norah Jones didn't stand a chance...

It would have been nice for Ang to thank the VFX team. Those animal FX were flawless.

The best in the business accomplished those shots. R&H is the go to house for CG creatures. The same VFX Supervisor who brought you Narnia and Golden Compass as well as numerous others. A very difficult time for the studio at this very moment.

You know Phil, with recent developments in the industry if I was an animation house I would venture myself into video game content creation. Its nowhere near as high end as movie CGI but if they could take the animation assets developed in those films and use it form video game creation for the new generation of consoles, these companies could have a constant revenue stream.

R&H has occasionally dabbled in gaming. Mostly in cinematics or commercials. However, they entered into the development field with "Eggs of Steal". It was actually my first introduction to the studio years ago. Worked on that for a breath.

Everything is on the table for studios like this. Many projects have been in development in many houses that may never see the light of day. Some projects are harder to get off the ground than others. Getting studios, producers, and filmmakers interested is always a challenge. I agree that content creation is the way to go. If that's a live action feature, animated feature, or even a game; that's all going to generate streams of revenue. There are studios right now who are jumping into that world. Some have been doing pretty well in that realm for a while. Some worse. Some gone all together. Game development is very expensive these days too. Engines, art assets, audio assets, scoring, programming, writing, setting up entirely new pipelines, etc.... Some games take 5 years or more to come to life. Most features I've worked on land in the 3-9 month realm for post. Life of Pi was a bigger beast and took about 2.5 years. A movie like Pi pretty much is in post production during pre-production mostly due to technical hurdles that really need to be tackled early on. That's pretty much how it is on top tier VFX features. Lots of new tech. Bleeding edge stuff. It's actually a very exciting industry that spawned out of the desire to "think bigger".

A good deal of the artists who work at these post houses do work in games as well. The journey of a freelancer sometimes leads them into popping in and out of both worlds. I've been pretty fortunate to work in both fields and continue to do so. So much is the same. So much is very different. In reality it's all creative problem solving and that's the allure for myself and others.

Thanks for sharing Phil. Always interesting to see and learn how things work over there. Back to the Oscars, one aspect that I found, interestingly enough, lacklustre this year was the "Best Animated Film" category. Pixar's "Brave" was an (not talking about tech) average film at best. Its interesting to see that animated films , according to the Box Office, are some of the most profitable movies in the business, yet, they are few and their storytelling, bar the occasional Pixar brilliance, lacklustre. Maybe companies like the one responsible for the amazing Life of Pi should seriously thing of a partership with the likes of Burton, Christopher Columbus, Spielberg, Jackson or Del Toro and present them with a challenge/partnership for mainstream, grandscale animated films. There are actually some very good storytellers also in the video game arena. Maybe synergies could come from that- a first attempt was tried with the somehow in my view underrated Final Fantasy, the Spirits Within (a film probably a little ahead of its time in presentation).

He thanked the "3,000" that helped him make the movie, and constantly referred to his "teams". I think it was understood. I doubt he wanted to sullen the moment by referring to R&H's misfortune directly. There will probably be a better time for that (as opposed to the barely 2mins they were getting anyway...).

Yeah Daniel Day Lewis WAS that good. His performance as Lincoln will likely become part of the American canon. He was given a standing ovation when he accepted the award. And it felt like a real, sincere, genuine moment of appreciation by his colleagues. His performance was so huge, so large, and so singular it could only have come from an actor like him: a man who "lives" his roles, and stays in-character through out the entire film-making process.

Congratulations to Claudio Miranda! And congratulations to all the other nominees for Best Cinematography.

With all do respect... I dont think it was understood. He thanked the people that made the bath tub, he even took the time out to thank his lawyer... his agent... He could single out his Canadian crew, the Indian crew... Taiwan... However, the digital actors had almost as much screen time as the main actor he thanked did. There is a real problem in the visual fx community and when it gets overlooked without a thank you... That only adds to the problem at hand.

Congrats to him. That said, not sure this film should have even been nominated for Best Cinematography. How many of those sunsets were actually photgraphed versus CG? :)

Digital Photography and CG blended perfectly in Life of Pi, but so as in The Hobbit. Both films well deserve recognition in cinematography and VFX categories. Though PJ has yet two more tries with second and third part :).

R&H's matte painting team deserved the Cinematography award. :P It's nice to see a green screen movie get some accolades though. Generally people dismiss any film with VFX.

Heh. A lot of those clouds were real :)

The real neat tech is the CG water and blending that with live action water in the plates. That's pretty tough to do. Also the creature work is really some of the most impressive to date.

Silver lining playbook was one hell of a script and it should have won best picture but...romantic comedies never do. So be it...congrats to all filmmakers. ;)
