  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The New Sigma 35mm F/1.4 Prime

Can't wait to see what that Zeiss delivers on a RED, i have really high hopes for that lens.

What $4,000 ???
Thats crazy.

No it's not.
Do you have any idea how much it cost's to get this kind of resolution from a cinema lens?
Put a 1 in front of it and make it five figures.
Addtionally, the actual figure was $3000 in many interviews and that is MSRP.
So it is likely to be even cheaper.

I might be able to shoot something in the next day or two. I'm waiting for a step up ring to get delivered so I can fit it with my ND.
But my R3d's are not 'normal' as I have no blur filter in front of the sensor.

Sigma is putting pressure on the other makes with these new lens's. Business is war. Zeiss is under attack ;)

mind if we get some .r3ds with that Sigma?

I guess i do not have any idea since i own the whole set of Zeiss ZE primes except for lemon 50mm f1.4.
I do not think price will be more then $2000. Even killer 15mm is $3000. 100mm makro is under $2000. Forget 4k.

Actually surprised they're selling it for only $4000, great glass. Happy to see some grassroots efforts pushing the big boys to hand us over better tech.

Any news on some real-world r3d-samples in 4k and 5k? ;)
Because, looking at the comparisons at tdp i'm a bit worried about the corner-sharpness. Center looks great, even at 1.4, but the corners do look quite soft on those ISO-charts. I know, we have some cropping going on, so "our" corners will look better, but i'm not totally convinced yet.

Got mine a few days ago. First impressions are good, the build quality is nice, focus is smooth. It's sharp and CA is well controlled. I like the performance at 1.4. AF works good, no difference to my Canons here.

Two things, one time it did some squeaking noises during playing with the AF. I hope thats just because the lens is new. It was gone after going manually from near to infinite and back for a few times. But, hmmm, thats not a great thing to happen during a first test, i hope i don't have to correct my thoughts on it's build-quality. ;) I also spotted some flaring here and there, i have to test that a bit more. But i don't think i had lens-flares that "easily" with my Canons. Don't know yet if thats something i like or not. Oh, and yes, it does breathe (didn't expect anything on that matter, it's a still lens).

So, after playing with it for few hours i think i'll keep it, but i have to test it a bit more, maybe borrow the Canon 35L to compare them directly, well i remember the Canon having bigger CA-problems and is softer wide open from earlier tests...

Currently it's not 100% satisfying for me, but it looks great for the money and performs better than the Canon 35 1.4 L.

if you like the new Sigma 35 !.4, as I love mine, may I suggest you try the new Sigma 50-150 2.8. I had the old version, which I loved (and was very likely the base for the Red 50-150), but the new one is incredible. very sharp wide open across the frame, just a little better one stop down. well built, a little heavier than the older version, but it adds stabilization.

These two lenses are now my go to lenses for video on my C300, and the Canon L lenses stay home. The 50-150 is a better range than the 70-200 for video anyway, and this Sigma is arguably sharper than my 70-200 2.8 LII. Also, the 50-150 seems to hold focus, if not perfect, at least very close, so that i can zoom and not screw up the shot.

I am now waiting to try out the new 17-70.

Full communication with the Epic?

I seriously would've never thought that I'd be excited for Sigma glass.. especially since crossing over to RED territory. These are exciting times.

I was under the impression that Sigma and Rokinon are the same lens, made by the same manufacturer, same assembly line, just different names are stamped on them at the end. I got the Rokinon set and quite happy with my purchase.

Please don't forget .r3d samples! I've been debating over this lens vs. rokinon cines for a while now.

Any word on a 24 and/or 85? Did I already ask that?
The next Art-Line leneses are a 30mm 1.4 for crop-DSLRs and a set of three lenses for mirrorless cameras (19, 30, 60mm 2.8). Unfortunately they had nothing for fullframe-DSLRs.

I think after all this time, it's safe to assume that this lens is sooo good that nobody wants to share .r3ds for fear of giving up a secret.

Yay, thats a first, i did upgrade the firmware of a lens. Today the usb-dock arrived. ;)
With that new firmware you can now fine-adjust 4 focus-points, which of course doesn't matter if you use that lens on a RED.
Can't say if there is anything else changed.

The software and fw-upgrade worked flawless for me.
