  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Movi from Freefly

So, the next questions that occur to me are best accessories? The setup is gonna want wireless Follow Focus and Video Transmitter / Receiver. I was thinking either Paralinx or Teradek Bolt. No idea on the FF. Weight and range are big considerations.

Thoughts?

I hope so too!

It shows promise, that's for sure. Another observation I have is that Freefly is getting all the exposure due to Vincent's promotion and social media infection. They're not the only guys out there with gyro gimbals this year. I think the Movi is the best one shown at NAB in terms of size and capacity for the needs of us on these forums. There were a couple smaller ones floating about and I saw two different guys walking around with self-built jobs holding small cameras. One guy came by the RED booth yesterday with one. It was made out of RedRock Micro handgrips and other pieces with a couple off the shelf gyros. It was small, he just had a little pocket camera in the rig, but it worked as good as the Movi.

I think in another year or two, gyro rigs like the Movi will be everywhere, just as octocopters are now. Everyone sells an octocopter it seems...

I got the MoVI not just for the silent operation but for the software included. I've seen other remote control setups (haven't seen any other Majestic or Shaky modes though) but none that operate smoothly. The real engineering job here is how they have managed to make the rig into a kind of joystick/3d mouse for the software, as well as being able to integrate rig movement with remote control movement and make it smooth.

Also just to make it explicit from Jeff's post above, the Majestic mode can operate quite quickly as seen in the above video, and can be modified on-the-fly during a shot via bluetooth on a laptop or tablet. That means there's yet another point of camera operation, an 'elasticity/responsiveness pull', sort of like manipulating the bottleneck in a fluid head.

Just posted this thread on how to support a Movi if anyone's interested. More questions than answers!

Pre-ordered #1362

Pre-ordered #1362

Cool :001_cool:

Well, I think consensus is we can drop the first digit from the order - so you're 362 :)

Wonder what their production line/manufacturing output will be, as I'm sure the RC copters didn't sell in the volume the Movi is.

I'm still fence sitting... my partners are interested (that makes a change - they normally need convincing!). I'd like to see some more footage taken using the latest Majestic mode.

After the big NAB splash, it's all gone a little quiet at the moment.

Hah! When Clark introduced us, I thought, he's way too young to know as much as he does! LoL

I get that a lot... Don't know if it's good or bad. Probably doesn't help that I'm a bit on the short side... :(

I'm used to it though, as I've been involved in a lot of things for many years.

For hand-held shoots like what's in this new Movi/Red video, I think the rig is perfect. And for a lot of other uses too. I'm still taking the wait and see posture though -- predicting that these are going to be like multicopters, EVERYONE is going to be selling them in the next year or so. Anyway, I know of two locals who have pre-ordered. I guess I'll have to rent from them for a change. Ha!

I read somewhere (can't remember exactly where) that the Freefly/Movi guys had applied for some patents, one specifically for the Majestic mode and how that translates single user operation.

I've a feeling it'll be the software implementations on these devices that'll be the deciding factor... unlike Steadicams where it's more related to the gimbal/arm/engineering combinations (that dictates quality).

Interesting times ahead on this type of device though.

Looking forward to seeing more on the Defy Gimbal... that'll be the judge for this - to see how it compares with the Movi.

Stabilised gimbals have been around since the eighties and there are apparently few patents that have enabled one gimbal manufacturer a significant advantage. They tend to keep their secret sauce secret rather than try and protect it with a patent.

Hopefully Movi have figured out some new stuff, but I am evaluating on performance, which may I add, so far looks very good, rather than the sales pitch or a successful patent claim.
Seems the USA way is to grant dubious patent applications then have them proven in expensive court battles later.

In the world of big gimbals the flood gates have also opened with at least three new players with plans to challenge Cineflex and then existing players are also revamping their range.

No question that the small gimbals will take some work from the big fellas as well as be a valuable additional cool tool

Was just browsing around and came across this - another Movi hands on from Cinegear 2013.

There's an interview first. But jump to 1:46 - it's interesting to watch what the gimbal does when she starts throwing it around.

Wow... at Cinegear doing a VLOG for cinema techies, and they can't nail an exposure. It's sad, really.

Anyone get a shipment notification yet? I've only gotten a "we're getting close" email, as well as a "custom engraving available" email...

Jon and Wade? are there others?

I hope they get here soon, there's a definite steadicam operator shortage happening in Colorado, I've been having trouble booking the usual suspects without a ton of advance notice.
