  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Meizler Module... The Details.

A few thoughts ,
Why ask for SDI out's of a wireless SDI uncompressed module?? That kind of make no sense, this module actually shoots SDI through thin air to one or more recivers...
Same for XLR connectors... they do not do much good, since the module both receive and broadcast full quality audio without wires as I understand.
In other words why would you like to attach wires to a module that is purely built to be wireless..?

Maybe it's covered in this forum but please can somebody explain the design of this thing...

1. Is it any specific reasoning behind the meizler modules wrap underneath the epic body? As stated above it kind of blows away the epic quick lock and the clutch. Does the meizler come with it's new own quick lock?
2. Is it only me or is the front motor ports in the best possible position? To me they would intersect in a bad way with some short and wide in diameter lenses and as stated above they kind of ruin it for 15mm rod setups, or no?

Red probably have good and sound reasoning for all of this but I would be so much more eager to spend the 13k USD if this thing just played well the rest of the red gear, red volts, etc.

Hopefully the little graphic that Jarred referred to in his response will be up soon so that questions on compatibility with the Clutch and all the standard aks we use will be answered...

Though I would love to see pictures with it fully rigged out (MB, lens, motors, etc.) - eye candy!

If not a pic, a brief description about mounting.

Seriously, I've lost sleep wondering if the cable tray on the base raises the lens center higher than standard matte boxes on rails...
I know, I need to get a life - and I know you guys are too good to not factor that in. But I had placed inquiries before and it does have my curiosity piqued - will we need new mounting aks to make the Meizler work?

Nice to see the power for a CineTape up front - looks sweet!
RED continues to impress.

Another great Sean video coming very soon :)

Oh sweet!!!i actually get to see the thing before I buy it!! Woo hoo!! No blindness!! :-)

thanks Jarred

Excellent news - maybe now I'll be able to finally get a good nights sleep...

Thank you Jarred!!!!!

If I can be greedy for a moment, will the video also answer these questions?

Questions on the 5-pin dual balanced audio input:

Assigned to channels 3 & 4 or can they be mapped to channels 1 & 2 ?

Will they be switchable mic / line?

Phantom enabled?

Does the 5-pin audio connector and wireless audio from REDsync Master share the same channels or can they all be operational at the same time?

Questions related to the AUX power connections:

Rated power output on each of the two 1B Lemo's =________.

Rated power output on the 3-pin Fischer = _________.

Fuses...

Hi,
Here's a pic of an Epic w/ Meizler mounted on a tripod using a standard Arri base plate (from 3ality Technica I believe), at IBC.

It seems to me the Meizler has exactly the right height to attach any standard Arri base plate. The Action Products Riser Plate, which we have on both our cameras, does the same thing allowing the audio cables to run through the plate, under the camera, to the back.

This Meizler is a great design, so many functions packed into one small package that fits so closely to the body of the camera, it seems to be part of it. I am so looking forward to sticking this onto our Epic.

And when Red come out with the Toia module, we'll stick it on our Scarlet :-) !

Cheers,
Damien

Hi Björn,
Well, if you have a Meizler attached to your camera, and you just want to plug it into a monitor, I wouldn't want to have to take it off. Wireless is great in many situations, but it will always remain less relaiable than a cable. I want a Meizler, but I don't want to lose my camera fonctionality. Same thing with XLRs, although I believe the type of projects that will be using a Meizler will be recording sound externally.

To answer your questions, having seen the Meizler at IBC:

1. The reason for wrapping the module under the camera is to allow running the connections from the Meizler to the motor connections on the front, it's part of making the camera as cable free as possible, I love it. At the same time it makes the camera have standard height for Arri base plates, which is what most people use.
2. Check out the picture in my previous post, the motor connections are sufficiently below the mount that they should not get in the way. As for 15mm light weight rods, with this kind of setup, personnally, I would prefer to go studio (wether 19mm or 15mm).

Cheers,
Damien

Damien,

By any chance, did you see any matte boxes paired with the EPIC/Meizler at IBC or elsewhere?
My question revolved around lining up the optical center of the lens with the center of the matte box - knowing full well that everyone at RED would take that into account...

What I was doing was comparing my EPIC in front of me to the pictures posted by RED of the EPIC with the Meizler attached. Could not figure out how they could place the cables underneath and still have the quick release in place - hence my question of compatibility (do we need a new set of aks to make it work).
If it can only terminate in an ARRI dovetail - eliminating the quick release option on the base, then that would be an issue with the Clutch. Unless RED were to manufacture a new insert for the Clutch with an ARRI Dovetail receiver in between the DSMC Shoulder Pad and the Double Arm Collarbone.
If they do that, perhaps a new alignment point could be incorporated that would allow horizontal adjustment of the DSMC Shoulder Pad in relation to the front.
Sounds like keeping with the "obsolescence obsolete" theme.

The video from Sean is eagerly anticipated.

There is a lot about the Meizler capabilities that has me interested too. So much so that I'm planning on another EPIC to keep it company. Just have those other nagging questions (and some receivables) to make it happen.

Can't wait to learn the remaining details...

Hi brian,
Yes the Meizler combined with the quick release will result in the rods being too low. I think you've got this figuerd out. I've never tried the clutch, can you only attach it with the quick release? I'm sure Red will offer a solution to this problem...

all fingers crossed on that :)

I also fint the QR-plate very intuitive and find it kind of sad that Red does not believe more in their own concept, and actually make the camera incompatible with features we've learned to love.

Yeah, the Clutch as currently designed has only the quick release - which is a fixed position to the rods on that unit (no adjustment).

The solution (using the Clutch with a Meizler equipped EPIC) could possibly be a replacement insert as I described in the "Unless" sentence.

I will confess to some experimentation after I read your description about the IBC setup...
At first, I went Ah Ha, that is what Jarred has up his sleeve! - The underside of the QR insert in the Clutch has a dovetail. Perhaps...
Out came the allen wrenches and I started to take the Clutch apart - thinking that if I flipped the insert upside down (dovetail on top / QR underneath) there would be the solution...
No go.
The alignment pins are offset with a different center than the tapped holes - so you cannot simply flip the insert over.
Damn, so close...

I will say, I've really come to appreciate the QR system that RED designed.
Being able to move the camera quickly between the Clutch, the QR I have installed on top of the ET dovetail (DSMC QR Platform Pack) and the Bolt-on that I have affixed to a Sachtler wedge... What can I say, it works exceptionally well.
Was going to buy another bolt-on and dedicate it to the jib - that is on hold until I hear more details.

Was really hoping that I would not need two different sets or standards of mounting hardware.
In the overall scheme of things, a small expense - but an interruption to workflow.

.

Audio Inputs can be mapped.

Meizler is line level or AE3 only.. but the camera still has the mic level inputs on the brain.

Since it is not mic.. no Phantom on those inputs. But camera can provide +48v on its inputs.

Excellent!
Between the brain and the module, flexibility is what I was hoping for.
Appreciate the update

sorry if this has been covered, but SYNCMASTER sends timcode and audio to the camera. If I have multiple camera setups, I assume one syncmaster will send the audio to all cameras right?

and second question. After SYNCMASTER feeds audio to the camera, what about the wireless signal that comes from the camera, be it HDSDI or HDMI, will it carry the sound as well?

About the wireless motor control...

I think I understand Bartech is not compatible with the Meizler module. Is their any technical issue that makes that compatibility impossible?

Also, does any one know if the M-One motor from Palomar is supported by the Mezler module?

Thanks in advance.
