  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

THE LIST: Camera Insurance / Equipement Insurance Companies

Highly endorse Taylor and Taylor for production and equipment production for LLC and Incorporated companies....
Have also found them very good for Feature film policies. They handled a claim for me in a prompt manner.

How are you guys filing EPICs or Scarlets on an insurance equipment schedule? Mine requires listing out items > $5000. Do you just put the entire assembled camera (side ssd, handle, LCD, etc) or just list the brain?

Well, because I had constructed my own spreadsheet of costs for each individual item and accessory in the purchase process, I just copy pasted that data onto a spreadsheet for the insurance. Some of these items stay fixed to the brain (e.g., DSMC top mount) some do not (WC Abox). If something ever happens, God forbid, some of these items may be involved and some may not. So, for me, doing it piecemeal was easier and more precise, and the insurance company didn't seem to mind (not that they would have known what half the stuff was). But if you list the camera and include the price of the brain and those items which are customarily fixed to it, I don't see a problem with that either.

Anyone using PPA? There rates are dirt cheap and I really only need about 15k in coverage since I own a barebones Scarlet/dslr/old mac. Just trying to make sure I am making the right choice here...

Professional Photographers of America? You might REALLY want to check into their policy details to see if they'll actually cover equipment used in film/video production...

Just thought I'd let people know,

I just recently got insured by Kat Wong, and she is, from what I gathered, starting her own insurance company called Athos.

I just insured my camera with her for 612 annually.

Her email information has changed to: kat@athosinsurance.com

While we are having this conversation rather then just list companies I am more interested in coverage specifics if any of you care to chime in on this, which I think is by far the most important piece of why any of us are getting insurance in the first place...

So I want the following, theft, liquid damage, fire, flood, mysterious disappearance, malfunction, wear and tear, accidental, full replacement coverage....And perhaps one day unattended rentals to third parties, but not at this time... (I just want 100 percent total security on my gear, even for problems I didn't think of yet)

So in conclusion do any if you know any company that can do this? I have contacted almost every company on the first page of this thread and I'll go through the others too in the remaining pages but truthfully its a total PAIN to go through the exclusions in the fine print. I got an aunt who is a lawyer to help me spot the bullshit clauses that gut the coverage so that helps, but shes already gone through 52 pages of clauses for me, with a single company. To have her need to do this on all these companies will drive her bonkers so if anyone can help me out with this I think its in all our interests. We should all know what our exceptions are before we all end up with a five figure uncovered bill, so as far as I am concerned, nothing should matter more then this to any of us, we need to know the limitations in the contracts before one of us ends up screwed. Given the way insurance companies are ran, and the way they hide the exceptions and limitations this is such a major pain to take on, I am finding myself overwhelmed before I even roll on something. Thanks guys, hoping someone can throw me a line here...

Who knows, maybe with all our combined policies we can analyze them to truly figure out which carriers/under writers actually protect us the most. With so many brokers its really hard for us all to even know whats the best bang for your buck, and to me personally I would pay more for no risk at all. That is what I want, a no risk camera I can go anywhere with and just do what we do best which is create art. That I think is what any of us is really looking for, not some company that is out to limit your coverage and not have your back.

Anyone have any more info for Insuremyequipment.com

3years I have used them.

3years I have used them.

Anyone have any more info for Insuremyequipment.com

I have been with this company for three years, never had a claim, it's mostly for major losses. For my policy there's a $750 deductible. Gear under $5k is unscheduled. Anything over is and listed serial numbers, etc.

You can do it all online and coverage instantly and policy in hand. Price was affordable.

They've been around for years.

You never know how good insurance is till you have to use it.

Yeah, it would be good to know somebody who filed a claim. Is it online only or do you have a rep you could recommend?

Online only, as I'm through them as well..

I believe Tom Lowe made a claim through them, can't remember where I saw that post.

The Quest for RED DIGITAL CINEMA Equipment Insurance

The Quest for RED DIGITAL CINEMA Equipment Insurance

Aloha,

RE: The Quest for RED DIGITAL CINEMA Equipment Insurance.

I'm very grateful to my fellow REDUSERS who posted equipment insurance information here on the REDUSER.net forum. It was very important to me that I find a reliable company to deal with in insuring my RED DIGITAL CINEMA equipment. I needed a company I could count on for quick action in replacing any lost or destroyed equipment. If I was in the middle of a job the loss of equipment would be compounded by loss of income and maybe loss of the job itself if I couldn't get back up and running quickly. The name Katherine "KAT" Wong seemed to come up often in the recommendations from my fellow REDUSERS. A couple of weeks ago, after I researched the legal aspects - personal licensing and company bona fides - to my satisfaction, I called Kat. In explaining my situation to Kat I told her I was interested in insuring my RED DIGITAL CINEMA equipment for use in a Water Housing that was constructed by one of the best Custom Water Housing builders in the business. My Rig incompassing the Custom Water Housing, an EPIC-X Digital Cinema Camera, a REDBRICK, a RED 5.0 LCD Touchscreen, misc. cables, a REDMOTE, and a couple of lenses will be used in a marine environment but not deeper than 30 feet. I will be filming surfing and other ocean sports including deep sea fishing here on the North Shore in Hawaii. I found Katherine to be very personable and fun to chat with and also very knowledgable and professional in discussing the details of my situation and the insurance I required. I wanted to have my equipment covered for a one year period for full and fast replacement in the event of damage or theft. Since I would be "on the Job" working if there was an accident or a theft incident I would need my equipment replaced quickly or I may not be able to fulfill a commitment. After discussing all aspects and requirements of my situation with Kat she emailed me the forms for the coverage I required. Although only a simple equipment list is required - listing separately any single items valued over $5,000.00 - I created a detailed pdf file list of all the items I wanted covered and their replacement value with photos of my Custom Water Housing and the individual RED DIGITAL CINEMA equipment components used with the Housing. I emailed this list and other required forms to Katherine. Right away I received a quote from Kat by email and after discussing some details of the proposed policy with her on the phone I was satisfied that I had the coverage I needed. My policy premium for this rig was about $1K with a $250.00 deductible for a year of full replacement coverage. I made payment for my policy and was very pleased I'd decided to insure my equipment with "Kat" - Katherine M. Wong. Katherine has worked in the past with large insurance companies but has now started her own company. The insurance Kat sets up is carried by a major insurance firm. In my case the Onebeacon Insurance Group underwriting company Atlantic Speciality Insurance. Before committing to my insurance transaction I had looked into how past claims of others had been handled by these companies and was satisfied with reports of their quick response to those claims. Insurance is something you hope you'll never need but if you do need to file a claim you want it to be handled quickly and smoothly so that you can get your equipment replaced fast and get back to work. Any delays could cost you a job and considerable income and damage your reputation. That is the real test of insurance coverage - how things come through in the event of claim. I can't - at this point in time - speak from experience regarding satisfaction of a claim - and hopefully I'll never need to file one - but I feel confident that my insurance with Katherine M. Wong is a sound investment in security for my RED DIGITAL CINEMA equipment and that Kat will back me up for a quick recovery if I should ever need to file a claim for coverage. I'd like to join the select group of my fellow REDUSER Forum members who endorse and recommend Katherine M. Wong for RED DIGITAL CINEMA equipment insurance. I think you will find - as I did - that Kat will be able to offer - in a friendly and professional manner - a secure insurance package to handle whatever your situation requires. I'm happy to be among Kat's many very satisfied customers. After working with Kat I understand why so may other REDUSERs hold her in very high esteem. Our RED equipment is very dear to us on so many levels. It's important to protect it in the best ways possible.

Heffernan insurance doesn't cover all water damage or even moisture for that matter it seems. Just dropped their policy and now looking for replacement coverage. Page 47 in Heffernans long list of exclusions. They changed underwriters and their exclusions changed with the change. Be careful with these guys, apparently only All Risk worldwide water damage isn't quite what it says on their website. They get you with the statement, with the exception of exclusions. Thought you should know.

Thankfully never had a claim with them.

Mark do you have any personal experience with them? If so, do you have your reps contact info? Post if you got it and I'll add to the list.

We are in the middle of an insurance claim with fractured atlas now. So far it has sucked! About a month ago, our Epic-M failed on set and we were unable to use it for the remainder of the shoot. We had to rent another Epic for 2 days ($3k). We thought we had this coverage, but it turns out that we are only covered for equipment loss in a fire, which is not the impression we had.

We pay $6000/year for $1 million general liability and $165,000 equipment coverage. Sounds like we may be getting ripped off

We are trying to fight this, so I will let you know what I find out.

Kenny

We may be switching to a new company but we are going to be very specific next time on what we need. Pretty much we need coverage for the gamut:
theft, liquid damage, fire, flood, mysterious disappearance, malfunction, wear and tear, accidental, full replacement coverage, general liability, unattended rentals to third parties

Thanks for this ongoing list of recommendations, and this is why I love Reduser!
