  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The "LED" light Group Buy

Hello Ketch!
I'm looking forward to round 2. Thanks again for spearheading this group buy. I was looking over the BB&S website and was intrigued by their Force V LED retrofit kit: http://brothers-sons.dk/force-v/
Do you think BB&S may be open to including their Force V retrofit LED into the next group buy? I'd be interested in 2-4 of these.
Thanks Ketch!

Ketch,

Apologies if my questions and updates sound a bit technical - if I can convince myself these panels are right for me, the logic may help others join the group buy!

My guess is that you have the Bebop V90RM battery.
+) It can happily supply 9 amps of current.
+) Maximum load is 12 amps.
Your battery can drive the Area48 panels at full brightness until it is empty

What is useful to know is that if someone's battery cannot supply enough current and trips out - they just need to dim the light a bit and switch it back on. This would mean that people can use V-lock batteries with less then 9.5 Amps available.

Those (like myself) with PAG's linkable batteries can choose to run 1 x battery at or beyond its 'nominal' rating of 6.5A (which means the battery isn't stressed), or link 2 x (or more) up and not concern themselves that that the battery is being overdriven.

Hi Anthony,

With regard to PAG linkable batteries, I ran a test with my new, freshly charged PL 96e's, with the Area 48's set at 100%. Now, I only tested with TWO of the PL 86e batteries linked, as the specs, would indicate that TWo PL 96e's are required to adequately and safely power the Area 48's. ONE PL96e provides: 96 watt-hours, 14.8V 6.5Ah, @ 8 amps continuous output, whilst the Area 48's want to see > 8 amps , for 100% power draw. Therefore, TWO linked Pl-96e's provide a greater amp draw than the Area 48's require, allowing for a 100% light output. As Anthony indicated and, from the online manual, typos aside:

Battery power operation
Not all batteries V lock or Bauer can handle the powerdraw on 100 % , there is typically 3 types; older and more modern.
The unit is consuming up to 125 watts on batteries. Type old discharges around 6 Amps meaning 6 Amps x 13 volts =78 volts =approx. 60 % Most standard around 8 Amps meaning 8Amps x 13 volts = 104 watts = approx. 80 % New types discharges more than 10 Amps meaning 10 Amps x 13 Volts = 130 watt. = approx. 100 %
If you experience that the unit switches off after a couple of seconds and reboots it may be for 2 reasons A. The battery is down ( close to empty ) B. The Battery cannot handle the load
We have made the following function to avoid the situation where the unit is set to 100 % and you cannot change it because the battery switches off before you can set it to a lower %
Disconnect the battery, reconnect the battery and within the first 5 seconds press and hold ENTER until the display reads: MAN 00 Now you can use the up and down buttons to select a level your batteries can handle.

Now the result: The total, continuous 100% run time for TWO, fully charged and linked PL 96e batteries was : 1Hour 21 Minutes.

Perhaps Ketch can add the PAG batteries to the list he had posted, as compatible with the AREA 48's.

Thank you very much

Fury

Okay, I want to give an update saying to every one that because in Europe every one has gone in vacation till end of month, does not mean that I forgot about the Second run of this group buy, just that all is now pushed to September.

Every one have a great end of summer and I'll see you all here in September, or earlier if I have something to add or questions to answer... ;)

PS: Since I am also taking few weeks off, yet I am taking one Area 48 with me and the RED Epic M8, I might share some shots with it here before then.

Thanks for the update! Have a great end of summer too. Can't wait to see some more shots.

Ketch, sincerest apologies if this has already been answered, but about how long would the Area 48 last when powered by an Anton Bauer Dionic HC or IDX Endura Duo? Thanks, sir!

Okay every one...

I'll be in LA next week, and I will finalize the Re-Boot of this group buy, and we'll move forward with it immediately after it, hopefully I'll also have a chance to use the fixtures on the project I'll be filming in this two weeks there and post the review and BTS video link of the fixtures at work here.

I also look forward to possibly show you the great Area 48 Single and Double carry bags solutions.

Be ready for it, and do not miss this one, as it will be the last Group Buy on the Area 48 LED fixtures.

Ketch-

Great to hear the 2nd group buy is close to coming together.

Don't you think it would be a good idea to create a new thread for the 2nd group buy? I know there's a lot of info on this thread but some people might miss the 2nd group buy altogether. Either way I'm in.

It was decided to keep it here, the second group buy is only meant to give those in this one a chance to get in when they did not on the first round, unfortunately it will need to be a very limited run, and could be that I will end up only limiting it to those that have already responded here, PM'd and emailed me about it.

It has been extremely hard for me to convince the Manufacturer to do this, and since now the product is becoming available in more countries included the US, there is a strong resistance on this from resellers, understandably so, but I continue ot see this thru together with the guys at BB&S to keep a promise were possible, but if and when will need to be limited to those already here and in my current list.

Ciao Ketch.
Outch. I was waiting just for the august thing (them being on vacation).
I hope you can add 1 (2 eventually) for me as well.
Besos.
Alvise

Ciao Alvise, you are already in my list, and either way it is actually easier to take care of you, since you are in Europe, the main issue with a second shot of this group buy is with US Resellers, which we are trying to come to an agreement with, so to be able to take care of our fellow US Reduser.

Ciao Ketch!

Any update on the Chroma Green 525n phosphors that you were to test? I may want to add these, depending...

The Snapbox is. BTW, a very nice booster.

Now, I am in So Cal-Orange County and have 3 Area 48 kits, with 3200 & 5600, accessories for two of the lights. Also Avenger stands, a boom arm and V lock, PAG 96Wh batteries. I know it doesn't really go here, but, if anyone on my area wants to rent the lights, if not yet committed to the GB and on Ketch's list, please send me a PM. Actually, I am looking at a Pelican (large case), but I understand that a soft case, for one and two lights is, in production, that would allow some battery and accessory storage on top/sides.

Thank you very much

Fury

Ciao Fury,

The Chroma Green Remote Phosphor Panels should be ready by end of September, and they will be something I will for sure never want to be without when shooting green screen.

PS: I'll see you soon I guess if you happen to hop around LA area from the 3rd till the 18th of next month, as I am coming ot shoot a nice piece with the Area 48 of course... ;)
