  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Internal Focus Motor Thread

Can't wait to see. What is the availability on the unit? What about f55?

For now the Canon ProLock-i and the RED are separate products.
Both available.
We are a little short on wireless receivers for about 3-4 weeks. We have very limited supply now. The new ones will be even smaller
They can be added any time and synced by the end user very easily.
We'll show that in one of the videos that will go more into detail.
I'm keeping the videos short so there will be 3-4 all together.
All under 5 min each.

Here you go
Just the first half for now. http://youtu.be/DQCy0WKLmEk
The wireless and the performance takes will be added in a day or two.
It's all recorded but taking a bit to edit.

This is pretty cool. For iris control though, am I correct in assuming that micro-adjustments aren't possible? It looks like moving the iris control affects the exposure in steps rather than smoothly.

Stepped iris is a lens property. We can give it thousands of steps but the lens only executes in 1/8 stop and stops at 1/4 stops.
That will not change with current EF lenses.
Focus control- on the other hand - is split up in thousands of micro steps and is super smooth.
We'll show that performance aspect- as well as few other important ones- in the updated video very soon...

Right on, thanks for getting back to me so quickly Jacek. I'm less interested in iris control and more interested in focus micro-steps anyhow.

The Optitron 2 looks like a winner :)
Now, can it control Sigma lenses too (I'd be happy with just the Art series) or solely Canon lenses?
The lenses are controlled by the camera so whatever lenses are currently compatible with the
Red mounts.

We just send the control signals to the camera...

Jacek, sorry if already covered

Can I move iris on camera and just use Optitron2 for focus?

Alvise no it has not been covered and a good question!!!
I don't see why not. Or more clearly the answer is yes.

We have the first run of a few dozen units pretty much ready.
They are not all for RED.
Majority are actually configured for our Canon mount adapter.
But I think there are plenty for the first run of Reduser purchases.
We are making 100 units in the next run- half way through the parts manufacturing at this time.
The RED units and our Canon EF mount units are identical except the firmware- so the ratio of different markets can be easily changed.
Also, before you ask, there will eventually be version that's compatible with various cameras/systems but it was not practical given the time constraints.

Jacek,

Very cool product!

Quick question, Can I still use my REDLink to control camera settings over wifi via my iPad app or foolcontrol while using the wired Optitron for focus and iris?

Looking forward to seeing more videos.

Danai I think you can as the optitron simply uses the serial port to connect and the camera does accept several connections simultaneously... I've tested 1 wifi REDLink simultaneously with an ethernet connection, or REDmote + REDLink or WMD using CTRL port + wifi so I'm sure you will be able to use optitron 2 with another REDLink device as long as it is not plugging in the same CTRL port.

Now changing focus thru an app could possibly mess with the optitron's hard stops...

Will this be a software upgrade that can be user upgraded or a totally new unit?
It sure would be nice to be able to use it on different systems. Even if it had to be suplemented with your Canon mount adapter on other systems...

Jacek, what's the proposed price point for this unit?

Also, how do the focus puller see the distances? As a focus puller, you need to see distance marks in some way otherwise you can't measure your points.

Too early to say for sure at this time- but it seems that the units should be upgradeable. I also don't know about field upgrade ability- probably too dangerous for the end user....
