  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The industry has finally engaged...

The words "crippled" and "RED" do not jive. And APPLE is not a company to emulate if you are building a PRO company.

Relating to Apple is not about PRO vs. consumer, it's about maximizing market exposure. Apple succeeded at that. I personally don't use any Apple products because I don't find them unique enough to strike my fancy. Lots of flash, but not really my style... but don't take that as a knock, the quality is good.

Redcode is a different animal though, it makes RED special relative to it's peers and it should be pushed out to anyone willing to try it. Web content publishing is now a huge and growing industry, and debating 2K vs. 3K vs. 4K is a waste of energy for this market. But it still should not be abandoned or neglected. This segment is where talent will be recognized early to be recruited from for bigger things, perhaps revolutionary things. You want these guys out there using your product, and knowing exactly why the workflow is superior so that they decide to buy EPICs for first their foray into bigger budget adventures.

If Red introduced a 2k camera, I would not be disappointed at all. 2k is still great resolution for high-quality web-content, music videos, commercials, and ALLOT of feature work for the next 5 years probably. I'm more interested in affordable RAW/Redcode workflow that simply high-resolution. Not everything needs to be super-cinema 5k future-proofed... even if 4k IS the future.

I would LOVE the option of a "crippled" Epic or Scarlet 2K camera with "only" 1-60fps or something like that. You wouldn't hear me complaining one bit... :yesnod:

Apple, Canon, GoPro, Nikon etc are focused on the wide base of the Market Pyramid. RED, Phase, Hasselblad, Arri on the peak. Apple et all will dominate the Vimeo/YouTube target market since even the iPhone's 1080P exceeds the current spec. The only question is how big a market is the "peak" and who will prevail.

On the same page here,

So I wonder about, (1) New members program, (2) New Scarlet program, (3) New… fostering young talent in film schools academic break + knowledge centers I.e. (what I call “Ember”)… and (4) LIMITED 3rd party development.

+ the new hardware (that’s big but a sub-component of the broader picture)

That would make it the most significant RED launch.

Why not?

E

I also wager that part of the new membership program that there is something more substantive and better structured than REDUSER as a primary source of information. For a 3d animation there is similar sort of program called Gnomon as part of the Autodesk flotilla of software. I would predict REDUSER will still/might exist BUT I believe that there may be a new set of on line resources that they pull they dust sheet off come the day. Let's face it REDUSER has had its day (perhaps)...

My guess is we will see (1) Scarlet Fixed 2/3rds (2) Scarlet Interchangeable 2/3rds and (3) Scarlet Full Frame Interchangeable. All will be 4k resolution, 120 FPS and they will have a lower price and wont have as many features as the Red One MX therefore keeping a happy co-existing family of cameras :)

Works for me. :biggrinjester:

Canon is a great company and I'm quite sure that whatever they offer will be a terrific buy. And as soon as you buy, they will offer another one in 6 months that you will want to buy again... and again.

Jim

I find it hard to dispute anything you say Jim, :) but I think Canon's product cycle (at least for pro DSLR) is much longer than that. For example, they announced 5DMkII in 2008 while MkIII (or equivalent) is still not around, but is expected in 2012. As for their camcorders line, back in the day, one could buy XH1 and that lasted quite awhile. Am I missing something? (apart from all these products not really being PRO)

I agree, foster a progressive working relationship with the talent by making yourself accessible.

It would only take a well thought out, solid raw codec release by Canon, Panasonic or Sony in a 2K DSLR to hijack this segment and groom them onto a platform. I think it's unlikely any of these companies would have the nut to be that disruptive, but you never know. But why take the chance and let someone else get there first?

I still put my money on Jim and Red growing to dominance and I don't want to come across as second-guessing their strategy, they have more info at their fingertips than I will ever have.

100%

That's how I think (in general)...

...especially about the why take a chance part... Especially for a longer arc. I have to admit I come under a lot of pressure to pursue shorter term gains, and I find myself having to resist this approach very strongly as ultimately one looses by far the larger fraction by several orders of magnitude. I really takes a lot of nerve but you have to do it.

Dude, what do you do for a living? (I know that's abit rude... but I am surprised by such a clear and broad overview....you don’t have to answer)?

Eric

If I wanted to speculate... why not 9K at 200fps for $2K? Easy, right?

Everyone needs to get real here... or Nov. 3rd will not be fun. And it should be.

Jim

I once did a video for 10K as a favor to an old friend. He then pointed out that some of the extras "Didn't seem like trained actors." I feel you bro.

I feel a “tin foil hat” moment coming on here, I dare not look. + plus I have a migraine that’s as painful as a fractured wrist/broken arm…but in your head; but sometimes REDUSER helps…

If we are tying ourselves in pretzels trying to figure out what RED has in mind, imagine what RED's competition is doing. Scouring every single syllable written by Jim to figure out what RED is upto, trying to find a way they can win at the marketing game that is sure to ensue Nov 3rd...

RED has said its a PRO company. To me that means they are not shooting for the broad base of the product pyramid. They want to be at the apex. And the way they reach the broad consumers is when the MARKETPLACE evolves such that 4K camcorders under $200 become a reality. Remember how much a 1GB drive used to cost? By such time ofcourse, the apex of the product pyramid will be in the stratosphere. That's where Jim/RED like to fly, methinks.

2 * (2*2)=8< 3 * 3=9

3k : )

yup. two cubed and three squared 11311. [(1+1) (to the 3rd power) < 3 to the power of (1+1)...from 11,3, 11...so 3k for between $8k and $9k.

That seems VERY fair and very correct to me. :) (even if it is inspired by pure crazyness)....

It sounds like slogan though, "two to the power of three is less than three to the power of two"... (3 of a kind beats...?) I'm crypto'd out....

That's very funny...(how much acting are extras supposed to have??) appart from being shouted at...Don't look at the camera!!!!!! (hint, hint) I think that's about all the training any extra EVER gets right?

He, he, he....

E

Nov third SHOULD be fun...

[Air fare hotels etc…, we are very budget conscious and try to squeeze out every last piece of usefulness out of every dollar [HW or SW dev], that’s why I’m a little rooted to the spot and will watch “remotely” on the day and the time I think.]

Mexico please :)

How about New Mexico... (please)

2012, some thing is supposed to be comming to an end ...right? I wonder what that could be. Didin't the Mayan's have something to say about that.

So special service/maintenance program. It's a bit like software you pay a "maintenance fee" use the equipment. That would be very helpful for academic institutions and an upgrade program that means that Universities and film schools have the latest and current equipment. This is normally a huge problem for Media technology institutes as even if they score a huge block of cash at one go then the equipment is going to get old very quickly. IF...RED has a program for that then that would of course be freaking awesome and very worthwhile. So obsolescence obsolete in the film schools/RED based media technology institutes. That will right there address a very real problem. I think it IS essential to partner with centers of learning. Without question and the fact RED see this makes all the difference (I think).

BTW the graphic (my anthro wife tells me it is an Aztec sun wheel, (bloody know it all... she's out trick a treating with the kids while I nurse my migraine).

Yup maintenance program not Camera program...

Damn dude, I love it when dudes spend $1000 bucks and suddenly think they are in the big leagues. It kills me.

if this means some new company is going to pop up and start selling high end cameras at a sensible manufacturing cost/retail price ratio, good. In the meanwhile, from where Im standing.. Red is the next best thing. fingers crossed this situation changes, then the consumer will indeed win, and so will whoever picks up the gauntlet first. My money is on Red, so far..

Yup but for $1000 bucks it seems you can get all the extras you want. It’s sooo important to have a very careful eye on the budget, my old man was very good at that. So if your budget is 10k then you have to be wise and get the red meat for $9k and an extra $1000.00 will get you all the extras you need (if you know the right people)...

You can’t possibly ask fairer than that!
