  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I have 30 Grand to buy a RED ONE - Help me

Well your most realistic option for lenses is going to be either nikon or canon still glass. That budget is not going incorporate even Red cine glass. However, you dont need to be concerned about this (depending upon application) because lots of people are shooting with still glass with excellent results.

If you make that initial decision then you will just have enough for the accessories that you need.

That is only a start....

Gotta have:
7" LCD (especially if you don't get an EVF)
CF module
Base production pack
2x Power packs (4 batteries & 2 chargers are required to stay up all day)
4x 16GB CF cards or 2x Red Drives
Nikon mount
some used Nikon primes or a 17-35mm 2.8 zoom and a 50 and 85 prime
Good tripod and head (Miller 50 or O'Connor 1030S)

This will get you going, but only just.

I'm no RED owner, but if I were in your position, my kit would include:

1x Base Production Pack, 1x 7" Red LCD, 1x CF Module, 2x Power Pack (4 Bricks, 2 Chargers), 1x RED-DRIVE 320GB, 1x RED-DRIVE Cable, 4x CF Card 16GB (There's a special running right now!) 1x Top Handle, 2x Top Mount, 4x Side Handle, 2x Steel Rod 24", 2x Steel Rod 6", 1x Top Handle Extension, 1x Red Handle Mount, 1x Left Handle, 2x Universal Mount, 1x Red Arm 9", 1x Focus Hook...

Of course, that includes no lenses. I'd let someone else tell you what to do though. Leaving ~$10,000 for accessories is a bit difficult. You could leave off the RED Drive and/or handle mounts, but with lenses starting at several thousand a pop, it's a close call.

You could opt for a Nikon lens mount and get some used glass from someone else- spending anywhere between $300 and $1500 per lens. You'd only need one or two to start. Maybe a 50mm prime and an 18-80mm zoom (or something close).

Like I said... I'm no expert, but I couldn't help live vicariously for a minute. :)

not enough money

body = 18000
monitor = 1750
drive=900
cradle = 750
powerpack= 1450
top mount x 2 = 500
18-50 lens 6500

32k+ with ca tax...

good luck...cant even really shoot with the above config...

$30k wont go far, I dont think this is a realistic budget. Here is a start:
Red w/ CF- $18,000
Nikon mount- $500
Nikon Lenses- $2500 +/-
Red 5.6" LCD- $1700
(4) 16gb cards- $1400
Red Power Pack- $1450
Red Production Pack- $1250
Red Hat- $30
Used Tripod/Head- $3,170.01
$30,000.01

Crap, I went a penny over and still need:
HD Monitor
More storage
CF Readers
Computer
Cases
Mattebox
Follow-Focus
Cables
Red T-Shirt

My BEST advice to those wanting to spend $30k on a Red One RIGHT NOW is to wait until the Scarlet S35 comes out otherwise you're just going to buy a camera that's 2 years out of the gate. Wait for the new, lighter, cheaper, better technology. Get a 7D to tide you over in the meantime, then flip that later.

TRUST ME FRIEND

If you can hold out for the 5K S35 Scarlet, you'll probably save around $10,000 from a comparable RED ONE setup.

That's what I'd do with $30K. But if you HAD to buy it today, then digitalfx's list is about the cheapest you can do.

Pay no attention to the men behind the curtain. :-)

Yes, you can do it, but it is going to be very close. I can, and have, done it very well, thank you, with this set-up:

1. RED and CF reader $18,000
2. Nikon mount $500
3. Nikon 50mm f1.4 lens: $300
4. Nikon 85mm f1.4 lens: $400 (using just these two lenses, we shot 95% of our film)
5. Sigma 30mm f1.4 lens: $300 (this will be your medium-wide/normal, but the 50mm will really serve as your "normal" all the time)
6. Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 lens: $600 (your wide)
7. Two IR+ND filters (0.9, 1.2) $600
8. Redrock mattebox: $700
9. Red charger and ONE extra battery (Evin might need two chargers for one camera, but there's absolutely no way you'll need it. We run one camera 18 hours a day with no down-time on one charger and 3 batteries.) $1900
10. 5.6" monitor (it works just fine. . . the 7" monitor is a tad better, but you certainly don't need it): $1700.
11. Extra handle (so you'll have two): $250.
12. 10 used 8-gig flash cards by Lexar (used. . . and, yes, we use them all day long and always have. . . they work just great) OR one RED drive: $1000
13. Redrock follow-focus (not pro, of course, but it works just fine for your purposes): $600
14. (Very) used O'Connor 50D head and tripod: $600 (I sold a nice one for $500 myself)

This would be the bare minimum you could possibly shoot with, buying things new from RED. Total: $27,400.

Now, you've got $2600 left (not counting shipping costs). If you have great eyes (and can see very close to things), you could pick up an Easyrig 3 and shoot hand-held all day long. $30,000.

BUT, again, you have no external monitor (not essential, but pretty important) and no computer or drives to store your footage on. But you'll have a set-up capable of getting you superb footage.

Buy a used RED and you could add maybe $4000 of other accessories.

Good luck.

Stephen

Okay, okay. $30,060 with a hat and shirt.

:-)

Dont forget the Red Hat- $30...in some countries its illegal to shoot w/o it.

Crap. Now you are telling me! :blushing: I had a feeling I was mising something just didn't quite know what it was. Ok, will have to make up for it next time I order.

I think you may also need:

1. Filters, including IR block $2k
2. Stix and head $10k

Lighting? Audio?

You may not need FF, though.

Hi there, Pawel. . .

I agree that you can certainly spend $2K and up on filters (and we certainly have), but for a stripped down set-up, I think that a 0.9 and 1.2 would get him what he absolutely needed to get good imagery. We have Formatt IR+ND filters from 0.9 to 2.1, but we seldom use more than the 0.9 or the 1.2 unless we don't want to stop down at all, but then we find that the filters just change the color of the image to much. I can't imagine using that 2.1, and the 1.8 is fairly useless as far as I'm concerned.

The O'Connor 1030HDS is $6500 with their sticks brand new, and with the upcoming smaller-sized Epics, the days of the 2060 are numbered save for the guys with those monster PL zooms.

But, yeah, lights, action, etc. sure ain't included in his $30,000.

:-)

You won't have to pay CA tax as you live in Florida (unless they changed the tax laws recently.)

If you get:

Red Body $17,500
Base Production Pack $1,250
Nikon Mount $500
CF Module $500
7" LCD $2,500
Nikon lenses (17-35, 50mm 1.4, Zeiss ZF 85mm 1.4) say $3,000
Red Drive x 2 $1800
Red Power Pack $1450
2 x 16GB CF cards $1000
Manfrotto 526 fluid head and sticks from Amazon $1700

Total $31,200

You aren't likely to get hired to shoot the next Lord of the Rings trilogy with this kit, but this is more than enough to shoot some gorgeous images.

If I had to get it down to $30k even I would lose the CF cards and get a 5" LCD. Not ideal, but I know a lot of people using the 5" and no EVF.

You can always add more later.

But I do have to agree with the others. This close to Scarlet, it is something you should really consider as your $30k budget would also get you some lighting and sound gear, as well as better tripod and accessories.

Best of luck!

You are going to be spending 30k, to put together a bare bones kit that won't have much resale or rental value. I would say a better investment is a 5D / 7D with glass and wait for Scarlet or better yet invest in Accessories that will never become obsolete.

Sticks, O'Connor 20/60 or 25/75, Arri/ Chrosziel Follow Focus and Mattebox, Filters all available used. Find some one in your area who has a read but doesn't have proper accessories and make a deal. When Scarlet comes you'll already have accessories and just need the camera package. I would hold off for Scarlet or take a loan for more money unless you just want a Red to shoot and aren't interested in it as an investment.

Just my two cents.

Dave
