  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I have 30 Grand to buy a RED ONE - Help me

i hear PD170's are going cheap:-) but i agree if you looking at the low end budget wait for the scarlet, if you cant wait then the 7D is good way to go. as that will shoot 24FPS as the 5D won't, you will still shooting in mpeg4 though.

wait a few months for the scarlet i say! and you need remember you need download support, and you should be packing a macbook pro at min for that. the 17inch comes with a few more ports which is handy.

Me i would rent, from a rental company by the job, it's looked after and if something goes wrong you can asked to get a replacement. unless your shooting all the time is it really that cost effective to own a red and all the spares of everything you need?

Epic/Scarlet release schedule

Epic/Scarlet release schedule

You mentioned you were going to be buying in Nov. The new release schedule is set to be announced in October. At that point the new accessories prices and features will probably be announced.

Making a decision now, prior to having all the information in front of you may not be in your best interest, especially since it doesn't alter your purchase date plans.

I don't have a RED, but if I was in the market for one around november this is what I would do...

wait for the Scarlet s35 but plan ahead....

choose if you want to use canon or nikon still lenses on your scarlet, then purchase the video dslr that works with those lenses. For example....

nikon d300s camera body - $1800

(from stephen's post)

Nikon 50mm f1.4 lens: $300
Nikon 85mm f1.4 lens: $400
Sigma 30mm f1.4 lens: $300
Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 lens: $600
bogen manfrotto 351mvb legs with 516 head - supports 22lbs. - $800

That is more than enough to "make do" for the time being and its all for $4200...you have $25,800 left

When the Scarlet s35 comes out, sell the d300s for $1400, you will end up with $27,200

purchase the s35 brain for $7,000 and now you have $20,200 left.

right now lets bang out a 17" Mac Pro, with 3.06 dual core processor, stock drive, Anti-glare screen, apple care plan.....take out the stock ram...and purchase 8 gigs of identical spec'd RAM from newegg by g.skill...and a bus powered fw800 drive that is 500GB by WD for storing footage...for a total of $3,908

that leaves you with $16,292...now go to your local community college and sign up for a class for $400 dollars....you now have $15,8292

With your student discount purchase adobe production premium cs4 for $400 dollars....you spent a total of $800 dollars to get production premium instead of $1700, pat yourself on the back...you now have $15,492 to spend.

buy the smallHD monitor plus the accessories needed to keep you shooting with it all day for 1,000 dollars...down to $14,492

get the cavision mb6x6-3 universal matte box system, with 19mm rail support and a follow focus for $3000...down to $11,492

get .3 .6 and .9 ND filters from formatt for about $900 total...down to 10,592

grab 4x16GB cf's for 1,400 and you still have $9,192 for a few red volt batteries, microphone, battery module, CF module, and a nikon lens mount all of which have yet to be priced for scarlet.

I think you would be in good shape with that... That being said this is losely based on what I would need so make adjustments as you see fit.

sorry for the way this post was written. I was kinda trying to hit one aspect at a time while checking prices on other pages and now its kind of a long drawn out mess.....

I would wait for Scarlet if I were you. But if you have to buy now there are plenty of used RED accessories that sell for about half price. Including the Base Production pack and the 18-50mm zoom lens.

yeah good call on the used accessories, but if he is trying to save money shouldn't he stick with lenses that are all on the same mount? If he is most likely going to be shooting still glass why spend the money on the 18-50mm zoom lens (i assume you are talking about the red lens) instead of spending the same money on lenses that will all fit one lens mount and save him the trouble of switching mounts depending on what shot he is doing. 6,500 for a t3 could be scrapped and that money could go a long way....maybe a red rocket card with a box for the macbook pro i suggested so he can preview his shots on a rented big screen monitor

Not to nitpick, but Stephen, is that the 85 1.4 or 1.8 - That price looks like the 1.8 price, but if you are finding them for 400, I spent too much :-)

Hmmm, thinking about it some more. If you really wanted to go super-cheap, I think the least expensive, brand new RED ONE package possible would include:

RED ONE body - $17,500
CF module - $500
One 8GB CF card - $165
RED Power Pack - $1450
Battery Plate - $175
Nikon mount - $500
5.6" LCD - $1700
Nikon 50mm f1.8D AF lens - $135
TOTAL = $22,125

This package is, I believe, the bare minimum necessary to be able to shoot footage with the RED ONE camera. Of course, it only includes one 8GB CF card and one 50mm lens, and there's no rods, mattebox, follow focus, tripod, or even shoulder mount, but you can shoot 4K footage with this.

This then leaves you nearly $8000 to buy another CF card or two, a decent laptop for offloading/editing, and whichever mattebox/follow focus/filters and tripod you could find used.

Ideal? Heck no. Doable? Totally.

However, I still think that if you can wait for the S35 Scarlet, you'll get a lot more bang for your buck.

you guys are depressing me with your "wait for scarlet" and "go for the 7d right now". You make it sound like my red is outdated :cuss: buy the way, the leica mount is 380 dollars, saves you money to buy more decent lenses (well you won't get far with those savings)

Hans, no way is your (or my) Red One outdated. This is all about the hard $30k barrier, which makes one of the more affordable cameras more appropriate. I've spent about $85k so far and have about half of what I want! ;-)

If you're destiny is EPIC, get a Red One today! Easy decision. But if you think Scarlet might be right, the R1 could become an anchor for you.
