The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

In case anyone missed this on FB, Frazier shot and edited ths piece for the Ellen Degeneres show, with Andy, Liz, Stuart and gang.

Hope no one feels Im railroading this forum but It seems that you can just chine in with almost anything at any time related to underwater.
Im about to pull the trigger on an RED H2O OPLF form my Forged in a Gates and was wondering if it really is necessary. Im doing some work in Fiji in about anywhere from 20 to 100 feet of water. Used the rig today with great results using the STHL Oplf in the camera but starting to wonder how much more I won't have to correct the image or will I really gain that much from dropping 700 for a few shots of sharks and fish.
So looking for a little help figuring if I should go with a new OPLF or just tough it out for the next couple of weeks using what I got.
Thank you in advance.

Yeah your all right its probably here in these miles of post but Ill admit Im a little lazy when it comes to those things and did not want to spend the rest of the night fishing and only find a few things and kind of wanted to hear a few quick comments on the H2O OPLF.

Welcome Russ.

For a very precise, and concise description of what H2OLPF does, search Ron Lagerlof's posts here on this thread, a couple of months back I believe.

And Rob is correct. Buy.

Thanks for the search info Tom, it did help me understand a little more about what to expect form the H2O OPLF.

This has become kind of a search for the Holy Grail for me... well maybe thats a bit much,,, but I have looked around and talk/emailed, forum, searched and checked out quite a few places and it seems at least from the looking around I have found that this seems to be almost split down the middle choice.
Some folks that I really respect their work and have won lots of awards (if thats any way to really make a decision) say that they shoot with the new Dragon sensor OPLF's and the Color Science now leaves less to worry about with regards to CC, and does a great job with the standard HLST or LL OPLF's.
And then there is almost the same amount of folks with the same respect of the community and their work has be recognized as such that say that it really squeezes that last bit of mojo out of what we all may be looking for from those underwater shots.
Honestly Im probably going to keep shooting some more on the bottom of the pond and see what comes of it and then see if there is anyone I come across that has a H2O OPLF filter and see if I can take it for a spin or rent it for a few sessions and see if I really feel the need or see a difference when I start to color or correct.
Thank you all for your input and suggestions for seeking out info.
If nothing more I now know a lot more about what the filter does and what it does not..

Always a pleasure Russ, to have accomplished creative shooters such as yourself contribute to this thread, glad you were able to get a bead on some of the issues we work with.

Re H2OLPF, it was developed in response to a very specific issue one of our more esteemed members here experienced, Michael Maes, resident cinematographer and author of the film 'Epiphany', currently winning multiple awards around the planet, and resident in the Cayman Islands. I won't repeat here the intense discussions that revolved around his issue with magenta casts, apparently specific to his locale, and the color correction problems that entailed; suffice to say, the Red Team, ably headed by Graeme, stepped up to the plate and devoted astonishing resources to give us an OLPF that went a long way to solving many of these problems.

In any event, the H2OLPF is something, I believe, you should have in your arsenal. Best of luck, and good shooting.

Thanks Tom. Don't forget Sean Ruggeri @ Red for his help for making the H20 OLPF happen.

Russ --

I have an extra H2O OLPF you can borrow for testing. Contact me by email.

The loss to the underwater shooter community is difficult to describe, Bob Cranston sailed west a short time ago, his extensive contribution to underwater imaging, his pioneering spirit, and the inspiration he represented to us all, is without parallel.

God Speed Bob, blue water, blue skies, forever.

Shot this piece for the California Academy of Sciences last month in the Caymans, should be airing shortly on west coast networks, great advertising for the Hollis Prism as well.

Did you power window grade the Big Blues or use filters? Looks great!

No filters of any kind were used Zeb, either on camera or lights, all happened in post.

A field note of caution here, one of the scientists had an O-ring on his scooter blow on initial descent, the flooding and subsequent electric shock he received almost caused him to spit his mouthpiece. Question for the CCR folks, does this have the potential to knock out the O2 sensors?

Additionally, the offending scooter was brought on deck, and after about an hour, spontaneously caught fire and began spewing smoke, we had to tie it off with rope and toss it overboard, the thing bubbled furiously for about 30 minutes before we could retrieve it. I thought NiMh batteries were not supposed to do this, a Li issue only. Any experiental anecdotes out there?

Holy shit Tom! I thought my failed seal / flooded Keldan light was drama ;-)

I know there are options out there these days for using nikonos lenses. Do any of you have any thoughts?
I use them on my DeepX housing and feel like they are amazing. That being said, everything looks amazing on my 15in mac so I am wondering if any of you using a similar housing with nikonos glass feel that they are all theyre cracked up to be?

I actually did a little shoot in an Olympic pool recently where I used nikonos 28mm (the waterproof one) which focuses in air and as light levels were low-ish I didnt need ND and shot with that lens naked on the surface and it was pretty nice. Hit it with a bit of HMI and flared it out which looked cool. I did some transition shots, like from underwater to revealing someone on the surface and water didnt want to shed off very well but it kind of added to the flare and effect nicely for this shoot.
