  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

Very cool Jon. Were the bubbles on the actor's face an accident? They added a subtle but distinct visual separation between the lovers.

Thanks John, we actually shot both and this was the first take and I didn't like the bubble at all so did a second without..... Looks like they preferred with and actually as you so they do give a subtle visual separation.

Thanks Ron... do you guys know how to embed? Tried with the video icon on the editor but no joy.
If anyone wants any tech info, it was shot on Epic Dragon 5K 96 fps with the Sigma 17-70mm which I must say for a super quick turn around worked really well. This shoot was 1hr at sunrise for the end shot and 4 hrs in the pm in a pool. Lighting was a 6k Mole Beam and a Arri M18 for fill and a set of UW lightdude 2 x 10,000 lumen lights for soft fill underwater

Jon, a little tip I got from Phil Holland. In Advanced Post, click on the "Insert Video" icon and paste the full URL into the dialog box that pops up. Just worked for me...
R

Yeppers. Works for YouTube and Vimeo. Just take the full URL and past it into the dialog box that comes up.

And I'm still drooling over the tonality in that last birds eye ray shot.

If you were at NAB last week "A Study in Contrast" could be seen on the big 4K monitors in the RED booth and the Gates partner stand. A few less artistic visitors commented that the lack of color meant our 4K monitor must be broken. :)

When will people start selling their Epic housings when moving to Weapon? Im waiting and waiting and it looks like everyone is keeping a backup :)

No, need to sell. At least with Gates. A couple of simple mods keeps everything current AND backwards compatible. I've had the same housing going on 5 years and with the same cameras through sensor upgrades and countless firmware updates and now the Weapon/ S-W. Obsolescence - obsolete...

Hey Jon,

Nice clip! Looks awesome! What other tech info can you provide as far as housing, port setup? That setup is working very well, its all so crisp! I have had the same issues with those leper bubbles and I think its a makeup thing but its bloody horrible! Glad you were able to redo it but ofcourse cant control the edit and their choices. I had been working with Kieran Fowler DP in recent times and I was going to help them out on that shoot myself however I was in Raja Ampat when they scheduled the shoot which is a nice segue to Ron! When did you shoot the Mantas? I was there early april shooting and the mantas were not wanting to join the party. Apparently they may have been spooked by their own popularity and the amount of divers out there these days.
I wasnt there specifically for mantas but it was a bonus that we had two swim by one day.
I had some amazing diving as we were working with a local diver who knows the reefs better than anyone, knowing where the most fish would be, least current etc when we were scouting/shooting 4 locations a day. This was a VR shoot so I didnt have my Dragon/DeepX combo with me but gee whiz there were a couple of days I wish I had that gear with me.
Good times.

Thanks Lee, Gates housing with SDI feed to DP and Director all shot wide open at 1000 ISO and LLOLPF... actually the early morning beach shots was at 2000 ISO

Not sure if anyone else is watching, but the blinding speed at which Nauticam comes to market with housings, just hours after a new camera is announced, has my head spinning. What the Foxtrot in Hong Kong, do they actually keep engineers and machinists awake at night, on fighter alert launch, just in case someone tries to go to market faster?

When will people start selling their Epic housings when moving to Weapon? Im waiting and waiting and it looks like everyone is keeping a backup :)

@uros:

They probably don't need to sell since the optical center and power button are in the same place relative to the bottom and mounting holes are the same for epic and weapon so not much change needed. Obviously something like the Nauticam that used the epic side handle for most controls is a different situation since the epic side handle doesn't work on weapon. That's probably your best bet since it is a pretty nice housing. Or just buy a new one from Aquavideo (shameless plug😉 ;-)

@THamilton

First of all those Nauticam guys are really good plus I think they get cad drawings from Red before cam is announced and I know Ryan
ordered the Weapon very early as well so they could test/prove the final design. And again there isn't a real big difference physically
Between the dsmc1 and Dsmc2 brains.

BTW how've you been? Are they shipping you to Alaska😉?

Hello All

Weighing in on the housing conversation since I use the Amphibico Rouge housing.
ROUGE accepts all Red Cameras from the original Scarlet and through the Weapon lineup.
Base plate/ board has been upgraded (slightly wider) to allow for this- there are many new additions to the Rouge that are
in currently in production - these will expand the flexibility of the system. I Love the housing and of course to be transparent, I am a longtime dealer for Aquatica/ Amphibico.
I am using the latest Firmware 6.2.55 with the Rouge.

Best to all.
