  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

Hi Tom, it was me shot on Epic Mx and a bit on 1DC

Beautiful job Jon, congrats to you!

I'm guessing those aerials were all Cineflex or similar, big budget project, must have been a blast to work on.

The clips on Vimeo look great, but I'm guessing the full-length version on YouTube is unauthorized, as it is very low rez and audio badly out of sync. I am going to purchase a copy for my library, do you happen to know who distributes it here in the US?

Aerials were a mix of go pro / phantom, Red Epic out the doors of a chopper with gyro and yep cineflex

Would trade left testicle (well almost :-) to get my paws on a Cineflex unit, also Phantom no slouch either, very cool gig Jon, hopefully more coming our way from you soon.

Yeah we are nearly wrapped on another show based out of the Kimberly on Pearls and Pearl diving..... not as big budget but it still should be a great show

Hi guys! I need some help.

I just got the Dragon and I already have some doubts.

Better remove the filter that brings?

And for those who have the Amphibico Rouge what is the last update that works well?

Many thanks!

Hey guys, anyone know of anyone with any kind of housing for rent or would come to operate to Slovenia, EU. Best if he is close by... Its a pool based shoot. Simple but dont want to use Ewa-Marine bag...
thanks

Hi Rafa,

We just updated our camera to the latest DSMC Build V6.0.31, we did notice that red remapped many of their functions on this update, which was done to introduce the weapon camera firmware. Looks like all that has to be done is a remapping of the key functions on the camera to the housing grip control locations. We are currently remapping our camera and functions are starting to work again on the housing, we will comment once its finalized. At the moment you can always revert back to build V5.3.42 which uses the original mapped key functions on the camera that were used on Rouge grips.

best,

Joe

Zeiss 15mm Distagon T ZF.2 Nikon Mount

Zeiss 15mm Distagon T ZF.2 Nikon Mount

Recently I decided to branch out from my Duclos 11-16 and try something new. I have read quite a bit on the Zeiss Distagon T 15mm, and last week I bit the bullet and ordered the lens for my Dragon. I have both the PL lens mount and a Nikon mount (as I am a nikon shooter and have loads of those lenses) for the Dragon. I realize most people use the Canon version of this lens, and while when I connect it to my Dragon it says "no lens profile available", I am able to map the user keys to control iris.

Is anyone else out there using the nikon version? Does this lens need a diopter? I will be using it in a Gates housing behind an 8 inch dome. I frequently use a +2 diopter with my Duclos, but have not seen much about diopters with the Zeiss. Can any Dragon Zeiss 15mm shooters offer any tips for using this lens?

Thanks,
John

HI John,

There are a few of us that shoot that lens in a variety of housings. I really like Zeiss 15mm especially when you have enough light to stop it down f8-11 and pull the corners. My dome is a different size than yours so you might want to reach out to Ron Lagerlof. At the moment he is the only one that comes to mind that shoots a Gates with a Z15 behind the same dome. He has also posted a bunch of his stuff here on Reduser so you can see some examples as well.

Hey John,
I use it all the time in a Gates housing with Canon mount. I dont use a diopter with the 8" dome and its pretty good in the corners as is.

Cheers

Gates RT7 External Monitor / Canon 11-24 / 10” Dome Port

Gates RT7 External Monitor / Canon 11-24 / 10” Dome Port

The Gates R&D crew tested several new products last week at the pool:

Canon 11-24 SP80-10 8-2015.jpg

RT7 External Monitor. Now available for pre-order, shipping in 3-4 weeks.

Canon 11-24 f4.0. This lens jumped straight to the top of our recommended list of rectilinear zoom lenses. Sharp through the focal range with both 8” and 10” dome ports. While this lens may benefit marginally with the larger 10” dome, our testing showed it unnecessary. You get classic soft corners at full iris, but stopping down has more mitigating effect than a larger dome.

It’s not well known but we have been testing lenses underwater for years. Using a resolution chart and repeatable techniques, we can compare apples-to-apples performance of many lenses.

SP80-10 Dome Port. Yep, we’re testing the prototypes. Optical quality AR coated 10” glass dome that is nearly a full hemisphere. Available in Q3.

I tested 11-24 /4 back in March, and posted the results here:

http://www.nauticamusa.com/news/2015/5/29/canon-11-24-4l-usm-lens-support-testing?rq=11-24

I like the eye doctor's "better, 1 or 2" approach. I have an imatest license and waterproof SFRplus chart, but there are too many variables from test to test that influence results, especially spread over periods of time. I also always test on FF35 to have a consistent reference point. You can draw in the various 6k and 5k windows (and most of the upcoming 8k window) to have an example that supports performance across formats.

When I shot this I really regretted not being set up for Zeiss 15, as my impression is that it is the only lens that can challenge 11-24 at a common focal length (behind a dome). In the months since I've become quite happy with the real world utility/flexibility of 11-24, so revisiting the comparison hasn't been a priority.

RED Collective

RED Collective

A profile of ABC IV produced by Sean Ruggeri. The generous Gates promo aside, this is superb. The underwater shots (by Sean himself), editing, narration, and music convey a powerful message:

Let me be the first, here anyways, to congratulate Andy and Sean, on a very nicely produced piece, as well as John, your gear is beautifully showcased, as is befitting of the Gates product. And hard to watch Shark Week without seeing Andy at every turn, great stuff, very dedicated shark conservation guy, these days we need folks like him more than ever.

Just a few technical questions for Sean; I noticed some vignetting and edge softness on a few of the shots, was that done for artistic effect, or is that a result of narrow DOF for underwater low light?

I know we've beat this subject to death here on this thread, and Johnny and others have had some very valuable insights in the past, but with Dragon 6K and H2OLPF, I think it deserves revisiting.

Any chance we could get a rundown on lenses, camera settings, and water conditions Sean?

Congrats in order, very nice piece!

Thanks very much Tom!
This project was an absolute blast to work on for me. Andy is such a badass and a great guy. It was really easy for us to communicate our needs and intentions to each other underwater and make stuff up on the fly. I came in with a checklist of shots/ideas but left with much more than expected due to the fact that I was working with the experienced professional that Andy is.

All vignetting seen was done in post, through Speed Grade. No vignetting on native footage from my camera. Regardless of the fact that I brought four lenses with port extenders to match I pretty much ended up living on the Canon 16-35mm for almost the whole shoot. I love that lens for a lot of situations and it was pretty much perfect for the the vision I had in mind for the majority of my underwater shooting.

I shot 6KHD, 23.98fps project over-cranked to 72fps which landed me at a 12:1 RC on the RED Mini Mags. My shutter was usually at 180 degrees or 90 degree (dependent on action and atmosphere) with a small amount of slimmer shutter stuff, especially when shooting back towards surface. Aperture varied but I tried not to dip below F8 when I could help it. There were definitely situations when I couldn't help it to keep a healthy exposure at those shutter speeds.

Viz was pretty good on about 25% of the dives we did together but got a bit crappy for some of the locations/timeframes. Mix of blue and then sometimes pretty greenish waters as well. But since we weren't necessarily trying to keep everything uniform looking in the edit (as we aren't trying to sell that this is all same place, same time), it allowed us to show a number of different looks and grading styles in different conditions.
