SOC Underwater Camera Workshop

SOC Underwater Camera Workshop

I've just learned that there is still space remaining in the upcoming SOC Underwater Camera Workshop in LA Sept 25-27, and wanted to share details here.

This isn't another "how to grease an o-ring" class. The SOC, and Hydroflex, have pulled out all the stops to create a comprehensive event with in water shooting stations where participants can practice real skills, with tutelage from leading underwater DoPs. Instructors at the event include Pete Romano, Ian Takahashi, and Tom Boyd. Learn underwater lighting, framing, camera movement, and techniques for working with real live talent from the best!

Gear reps such as myself will be on hand for equipment help. I'm also providing one scholarship for a Nauticam underwater housing owner to attend free of charge, apply with your resume and 150 words as to why it should be you to ryan at nauticam dot com.

Full details here:

Thanks Tom, that's very nice of you to say.

Good shooting.

Let me be the first, here anyways, to congratulate Andy and Sean, on a very nicely produced piece, as well as John, your gear is beautifully showcased, as is befitting of the Gates product. And hard to watch Shark Week without seeing Andy at every turn, great stuff, very dedicated shark conservation guy, these days we need folks like him more than ever.

Just a few technical questions for Sean; I noticed some vignetting and edge softness on a few of the shots, was that done for artistic effect, or is that a result of narrow DOF for underwater low light?

I know we've beat this subject to death here on this thread, and Johnny and others have had some very valuable insights in the past, but with Dragon 6K and H2OLPF, I think it deserves revisiting.

Any chance we could get a rundown on lenses, camera settings, and water conditions Sean?

Congrats in order, very nice piece!

Thanks for the insight Sean. Which version of the 16-35 was it the f4 of f2.8 II. Just interested which you prefer.

My pleasure guys. Thank you!
I've got the f2.8
Usually don't get that wide open underwater but I use that lens for a lot of terrestrial shooting as well so I went with the faster version.

Gates STO Training -- RED Miami

Gates STO Training -- RED Miami

The next Gates STO Training is at RED Miami on September 16/17. Much like camera training you might have taken (a la REDUCATION or Flex4K), this is all about the gear, your “tools of the trade”. We will focus on how to setup, test, and operate Gates underwater imaging systems, and the relationship to real world applications in Natural History, commercial, cinema, research, and broadcast TV. The Gates STO Training also comes with a Certification to put on your resume. To find out more, PM me or STO@GatesHousings.com. If you can’t make Miami, the next STO Training is planned at Backscatter / Monterrey this November. Berk and his team have additional courses lined up that include editing and pros from the Natural History arena.

In the genuine spirit of this forum, it is pleasing to see the growing educational opportunities for underwater imaging, with special shout out to Jon Shaw’s highly successful Underwater Cinematography seminars. (http://ginclearfilm.com/training/)

Sharing, learning, success.

A few of us here went diving with the Great Hammerheads a couple of years ago, UK photographer John Bantin was with us on that trip. The BBC has just published an online piece about John here, included are some pics from that trip;

My favorite shot from that trip: Frazier Nivens with Hammerhead (and AquaVideo housing - Hammer tough!:wink5:)

Long time follower of the underwater threads on reduser, big fan of the work here. Long story short im looking into doing a month long dive to trip with my sister(marine biologist) to learn/gain experience shooting underwater. Have any suggestions on favorite places to shoot in Oct/Nov, that are not to pricey? Looking for somewhere with pretty diverse marine life, being from the north Atlantic we usually only see lobsters and sometimes squid.

Also looking for advice/suggestions on budget a friendly starting kit mainly a housing. Id love to get the gates deep but not having underwater work to cover, I don't think I can justify the cost. The Amphibico rouge housing would be pushing the budget I had in mind. I know this has been a touchy subject in the past so a pm would be great. Lens wise I thinking id use my tokina 11-16mm and my leica r 60mm marco and adding a +2 diopter to the tokina. Would that they be good lenses to start with or should I pick up something else?

If you are looking for some tips from an underwater Epic user that just so happens to own a resort in arguably the best muck diving location on the planet, check out Simon Buxton / NAD Lembeh.

It can be expensive to get to that part of the world, but pretty cost effective once you actually get there. If I had a month free, that's probably where you'd find me...

DEEP WEAPON Upgrade

DEEP WEAPON Upgrade

#ShotOnGates

Underwater professionals have come to rely on Gates established, proven workhorse rigs DEEP EPIC and DEEP DRAGON. Continuing that tradition, both are upgradeable to DEEP WEAPON. A la “Obsolescence Obsolete’, the DEEP WEAPON upgrade protects your investment. You are not forced to buy an entirely new housing and accessories.

DEEP WEAPON Details:

· Your DEEP EPIC or DEEP DRAGON can be upgraded to DEEP WEAPON.

· Once upgraded, DEEP WEAPON will be backward compatible with *all* Epic camera models. Scarlet, EPIC, DRAGON,
WEAPON…..and….wait for it…. the newly announced RAVEN.

· Your DEEP EPIC or DEEP DRAGON accessories are usable with DEEP WEAPON.

· Both External Monitor Housings RP5 (for the RED Pro 5” LCD) and RT7 (for the RED Touch 7” LCD) are compatible. Upgrading from the RP5 to the RT7 is easy: remove one and install the other. They are directly swappable.

· REDMOTE: This is official: WEAPON will have
tethered REDMOTE support. That’s right: the REDMOTE Controller on your housing provides full camera menu access to WEAPON DRAGON. RED Digital Cinema rises to the occasion for their customer base and – in particular -- the underwater community.

DEEP WEAPON is the most flexible, adaptable underwater system for the RED EPIC family of cameras. Over 200 lenses supported. Accessories for every application, and custom modifications on request.

And of course, DEEP WEAPON IS a GATES: Bulletproof. 2 year warranty. Legendary support.

We have an upgrade list started. Contact Pamela or me to get in the queue. Final upgrade price is TBD.

ENCHANTED KINGDOM -- Beneath the Waves

ENCHANTED KINGDOM -- Beneath the Waves

Evergreen Films and BBC Earth teamed up 4 years ago on the blue chip 3D film Enchanted Kingdom: Wild Africa. It is making releasing into theaters around the world (including IMAX this November) and is one of the most remarkable, ground breaking 3D features to grace the big screen. Our friends at Evergreen pioneered shots with a 3D Atom platform that had never been done before, and it brings to our eyes perspectives that....well, just go see it.

This behind the scenes episode features the Gates DEEP ATOM rig filming native 3D underwater sequences. Despite the rise and fall of 3D, it remains one of the biggest projects ever undertaken by Gates, establishing many 'firsts' in underwater digital 3D acquisition.
