  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

Alrighty then, we have all been duly warned by the mods, at the first sign of skullduggery, tomfoolery, bait-n'switching, name-calling and so forth, this will get shut down in a New York second. Capiche?

Tom, your first sentence from the resurrected "Bubble Blower" thread - 2322 messages and 233 pages ago. Probably, wiser words have not been said on this forum. It seems to me that this forum thread has devolved once again to the depths (no pun intended) it had gone before the previous one was closed. Maybe it's time to let this one go to the same watery grave (metaphor intended).

Lack of interest, maybe? Lack of any real information, possibly... Most probably the lack of any real camaraderie that allows its members to share in the achievements of others, or acknowledgement of the real work that is going on behind the scenes at RDC, or other third party vendors, that will help our specific slice of the digital cinema world achieve the quality of imagery we strive for.

I think most of us have "figured it out" and have a process - a work flow? a dynamic? - that works and have generally been willing to share that without resorting to whining, bashing, flaming, etc. - and without the constant need for a pat on the back...

Calling people out by name, shaming them for not speaking up publicly, isn't doing this forum or anyone in it any favor. And, by the way, who is doing the judging - "harshly"? The only embarrassment is that this is the second time that this thread has headed down the toilet (again, your choice of pun or metaphor) and I for one won't be sad to see it go.

Kind regards to all my fellow "Bubble Blowers" - Ron Lagerlof

Wise words Ron, I don't really know where to go from here.

Rudi has been one of the most articulate and intelligent posters on this thread, a huge supporter of Red, an astonishing fount of underwater knowledge and experience, at other times a scathing critic, but with that kind of determined focus, why would anyone want him out, his goal is nothing other than excellence, I remain at a loss as to why he was banned.

As a junior guy here, I have relied on his advice for a variety of shoots, everything from rebreather to deep and dark, the Esmeralda in Chile almost killed me last year, but for Rudi's sage advice, I likely would not be here to cause the trouble my last post seems to have generated.

In any event, the banning of any of us results in a loss of essential vitality, a necessary input, that which keeps us creative, and alive.

If you are able, kindly ask Jared to rescind.

I guess at the beginning it was more about camaraderie due to being the beholders of a new 'in your face' concept to camera manufacturing and ownership. It's been a long ride and one that has over the course of time lost it's edge in the sense of being 'special'. RED Is a camera system, for some a lifesaver, for others the epitome of perfection and for others, yeah maybe not so much. It was fun at the beginning to see who was doing what, where, when and how, especially in the wet stuff. With the 3rd party support market now well and truly kicking for RED it's simply another camera system. The rest of the manufacturers were caught with their pants down and Jim, being the astute businessman that he is, capitalized on that. We all doffed our cap to that vision, some maybe a tad too 'fanboyish' than others, but we all applauded, that is until "obsolescence obsolete" became, well, obsolete.

Wherever and whenever one has a congregation within any given field of artistic creativity there will be differences of opinions. What works for one may not work for another. Rather than respecting that too many people over time simply chowed down on anything that went against the general grain and flow of the core discussion and core set of members. Given the bullish nature of some it descended into rather pathetic displays of bitchiness and squabbling, quite the opposite of character one would expect given the caliber of those doing the shouting. I think the majority of people now see this as a site to visit when they may have a question. Gone are the days where the vibrant, back slapping good humor made this a cool place to be. It's stagnated, descended into many bitter a squabble. I ghost around here from time to time having started the original (RIP) Bubble Blowers thread and simply can't bring myself to feel anywhere near as positive about contributing here anymore seeing the way some people are treated. So I guess it's fitting to say "as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, REDUser.net without Bubble Blowers, Amen.

I can only paraphrase the great Jannard's words, so often repeated here over the years, you don't tell someone they are wrong, you show them. In spades. I think the storied clmb to prominence of the Red system, from upstart to Hollywood stardom, attests to this.

That is what Jim has done, over and over again, just being a part of this has been an astonishing journey.

We have carved out a little niche for ourselves, the uw shooters, the support shown to our community by RDC and the very unique problems we face, has been nothing short of astonishing.

Yes, your name was called out, but only because you carry the weight to change something, for some reason you choose not to, we are greatly diminished by that.

if Marc's post is true, that this is just now another camera system, race run, rank and file, then so be it, rest in peace.

Heh heh thanks matt. You guys are important to us so if you guys have an issue with something and you all scream loud enough I will hear you.

On a positive note, Here is a shot Sean took 100ft down with the new H20 OLPF. Raw R3D so you can much around with yourselves.

Thanks Jarred!

Shot specs: RED DRAGON, H2O OLPF
Canon 16-35mm +1 diopter
Gates DEEP DRAGON with the new GT14 lights. They were at about half power in this shot if I remember right.
N/W wall off Grand Cayman about 100-110ft.

This is the way to get this thread back on track! Thank you Jarred.

Thanks Sean and Jarred. Not an UBBer, but couldn't help but have a play in RCX -

All DC2/RG4. The first one is with everything set to default. Even that looks good to me, just kind of unlit looking. The second one is an attempt at a normalized and saturated look, with the third one being the same thing but darker and maybe more atmospheric.

Hope it's alright to post them, the colours are amazing.

That is looking really good, still don't see the H2O OLPF on sale at the Red Store, any chance they'll be shipping soon? Would really like one for an upcoming shoot (mid-March).

RT7 External Monitor Housing

RT7 External Monitor Housing

A peek at the RT7 External Monitor for DEEP DRAGON. It is directly interchangeable with the 5" Red Pro External Monitor housing. Coming soon....

Can this external monitor be adapted to different housings, or is the thru-the-housing connector Gates proprietary?

What is the price point John?

Looks very good.

RT7 External Monitor

RT7 External Monitor

It is our design, but can be adapted to other housings. You need about 2" Ø flat spot for the pass through bulkhead fitting in a location that can be routed to the camera VF connection (or a +1 module).

Price point is TBD. Our 5" RED PRO External Monitor is $3675, so you can expect the RT7 about the same.

Dragon upgrade

Dragon upgrade

Just wondering if anyone else is now screwed as I am with this "upgrade to Dragon till June" policy, for owners of the Mysterium X. Just bought the Mysterium X less than a year ago and now I either upgrade now (till June) or never do. So if you can´t afford it now No H2o OLPF and am left out of the loop indefinitely as I am guessing our Gates housing won´t accommodate the new "Weapon" in the future. Just looks like the whole concept I went to for of buying a camera/housing that is upgradable and therefore "future proof" looses its sense when upgrades come out every year and you have to make them or miss the train. I am guessing us UW guys get it worse than everyone else. Can´t afford the upgrade till summer, need to use camera till October for a production and then I can afford the upgrade but it is closed :-( Murphy's law at its best.
