The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

Sri Lanka also is sadly famous for having the highest incidence of blue whale deaths not caused by hunting anywhere in the world, since shipping lanes cross right through their area and those boats won't move an inch for anyone, sad to see those majestic animals chopped up by props...

Just returned from Cancun as have many other shooters......On a recent shoot for a small 5min. sequence that occurs underwater and just happens to involve whale sharks. This is from the Mexican Feature Film entitled: "Hagase tu Voluntad" Shot topside on the F55 and underwater with RED Epic @ 5k full frame & a few personal shots i took days prior at 5k HD. Not only are there a mind blowing number of whale sharks in the region. It's also a bit pitiful to see so many animals with propeller cuts and some even have large boat props that have cut into the animals leaving huge gashes....The balance here between tourism & oversight is a gray place indeed. Needless to say there are a number of boat drivers that just should not be out on the water here and the good drivers know who they are. But here's a few grab frames:

NICE TO see the whale sharks are preforming again..thanks again to Johnny,Rudi,Andy and Frasier for their expert opinions on takeing the old red one mx underwater which I am now starting to settup..what lense and settings on these whale shark shots JOHNNY..ALSO picking your brains.. I am playing with the BIRGER MOUNT AND IMPERO UNIT THAT CAME equipped on my red one mx kit..never been off the mount only birger..then tokina 11-16mm lense seems to search on focus. and the hand wheel impero looks like a xmas tree when I TURN IT ON.even with new batteries..any thoughts how to fix this..would like to hit the pool next week..then the great lakes..koz

Nothing to fix Jim, make sure to turn the Impero on before you boot the camera. then to make the Impero work I always found it best to hit the Cal button on the unit to make thing work properly. I'd make sure that the Impero firmware is also up to date but if you bought it from someone as a unit along with the RED One installed it probably is. Contact Eric at Birger or check around he can probably get you a PDF of the instructions for the unit, it may be somewhere online still.

Are you using it wireless or cabled? Make sure to have a spare lemo cable that is the right one for the Impero from Birger. And was the Birger installed on RED One already? To see the lens data you may need to turn it on in the menu of the RED One. Just read your whole message, came installed. So it's probably already set up. Cabled is best and works even if batts are down, can be powered by camera. Loved my Impero, it always worked well for me.

Best,
Frazier

Jim,

Unless you have a remote monitoring and control requirement for your client, there is no reason to use the Birger mount. Focus/iris/record start/stop control is all you need, your Aquavideo housing does all of these things mechanically, and so much more reliably.

The stock Tokina 11-16 will also not do much for you; the Duclos cine-modded 11-16 is the perfect match for your R1/AV setup. Also works wonders on a Gates Deep Red.

Just ask Johnny, that's the rig he won an Emmy with.

I am finding the Duclos PL mounted 11-16 lens very unsharp on the edges. Anyone else experience this?

Yes, always has been inherently soft on corners with dome--it's just so wide...In my use, i had done a center crop and then the lens is very sharp. but in reality....the edges are just that...edges and i realy don't find it a bother, but that's just me....i rarely have time to view the eges when there is motion going on and if our subjects are framed well, we should not the audience viewing edges. But is it tack sharp--nope. but if center cropped a bit, then it's a great lens in that respect.

Edges are on the soft side, yes, but a great lens nonetheless. I believe Rudi uses the Nikon 14-24 and 10-24 for better edge performance.

Jim,

Unless you have a remote monitoring and control requirement for your client, there is no reason to use the Birger mount. Focus/iris/record start/stop control is all you need, your Aquavideo housing does all of these things mechanically, and so much more reliably. It was actually kind of sad that the whole Birger/Red thing got twisted up - it was a great system similar to Red's Canon mount but also had the true follow focus knob - that still isn't available for the Red canon mount (remember the Redmote Pro that was supposed to come out - with a follow focus knob?)

The stock Tokina 11-16 will also not do much for you; the Duclos cine-modded 11-16 is the perfect match for your R1/AV setup. Also works wonders on a Gates Deep Red.

Actually the birger mount works great for underwater - and allows the same type of electronic control for virtually any canon EF type lens similar to your rouge housing. Jim has the former Frazier Nivens RedOne housing with the builtin AquaVideo Birger control circuit board and switches, that Frazier used for several years with his RedOne and was quite reliable.

Birger wasn't necessary on Epic housings because the Red Canon mount can be controlled via the housing controls that hit the buttons on the brain and LCD which give iris open/close and focus near/far and a couple other functions even without using a Redmote. I developed an external Redmote case but with the Redmote proving to be a bit "wiggy"/unreliable and with the implementation of the control functions on the buttons on the brain it hasn't been all that necessary, so haven't sold many. (In part because was waiting on that Redmote pro to see if it was more reliable and to have the follow focus function.)

BTW Optitek's unit is basically a Birger type mount for the epic with an improved follow focus.

thanks guys.and especially Frasier.the red one mx came always equipped installed birger mount never been off camera talking to previous owner today..I will have to find where to order a spare lemo cable for hard wire control...I will try some other lenses as well..and contact birger direct for some advice....LOVE THE CALM WARM kEY lARGO OCEAN SURFACE SHOTS fRASIER..our great lake is now a sizzling 53degrees at the surface of course....and green as my backyard grass..koz

Haha Rafa, great pic, looks like the housing is swimming along by itself, minding its own business.

i'm collecting info on how various users key map the Rouge controls for different lenses and configurations, personalize it to suit their needs, if you have the time, would you mind sending me details of your rig? When I've put together a comprehensive list, I'll send it out to everyone. Thanks. redseapictures@gmail.com

Hi Rafa,

This is truly a beautiful film and definitely an invitation to travel to the Azores!
Perfect job!
Cheers,

Michael

Yes, beautiful film indeed, well shot, well edited, nicely timed to the music,

But, in as much as we've been occupied by this problem for a long time now, that is, the Epic's problematic color rendition underwater, the blues in the film look very off to me. Yes, they are blue, but there seems to be a lot of red in the blue, perhaps another variation of our magenta contamination?

Not to take away from Rafa's work of course.
