  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

....and to throw something else into the mix:

Who likes their housing perfectly neutral underwater, able to proverbially move them around with one fingertip?

I find getting my housings negative is conducive to much steadier shots, more inertia-driven tracks and more stable handling all around. But it could be my hands are getting too shaky at my old age...

Thanks a lot!!

Tom, now I'm traveling, in ten days I will send you all details.

Rudi yes, they are a lot of red in the blue, sure magenta contamination, so the Blues are something forced in the Edition. :-(

I likes my housing perfectly neutral underwater, for me it is essential for smooth motion. I guess it's a matter of taste. :-)

That explains the banding Rafa ;-)
We're nearing into the magenta-issue with RED, but still lots to do :-/
With my Epic I can only dream of your blue....

I prefer my housing more than slightly negative underwater Rudi.
But on land I would love it to be neutral.... John E- ??!! ;-))

Lovely Blue Sharks Rafa. They once were abundant here in San Diego, now all but gone.

Great to see your selected clips- sorry to have missed you!

I prefer my rig neutral to slightly negative but i do change the buoyancy depending if I am free diving, scuba, macro or wide etc.

Michael, the banding happens when uploading to Vimeo.

John, they once were abundant in the ocean, now all but gone. It's very sad but they are disappearing from everywhere :-(

Hey Rafa,

I only get banding on Vimeo when I need to color correct (magenta) too much or when I pass a noise reduction filter.
Else I normally don't get banding.
It also seem to depend on the monitor.
Sometimes you see no banding on monitor X and a lot on monitor Y.
Digital era ;-)

Gents,

The incomparable Mike Hastings, never really appreciated, well understood or properly remunerated in his time, all 6'4" of him, has shot what is possibly the first underwater footage with the BMD cinema camera, and I will be getting the RAW footage from Mike and grading a quick sample for all to see soon. Better yet, Mike shot the camera side by side with Frazier's Epic, so at last we'll have a point of comparison that will, hopefully, be helpful in figuring out the color problems with RED.

Stay tuned!

EPIC and BMD camera UW

EPIC and BMD camera UW

I'll send you some R3D's of the ones that we shot side by side Rudi. Just send me a frame grab from each one. I got some beautiful footage from this end with EPIC. The BMD 2.5k camera was small and compact, and seemed to pack a lot of punch for the money. Won't be giving up my EPIC for it UW though.

I know it's not a big deal but I was troubled to not be able to manually white balance the camera UW, you have to preset to closest k. But the balance of the housing and the way Mike had set it up was just nice. And you can't beat the price.

The footage looked pretty nice here. To run resolve I need a new Graphics card which is overdue, thinking about the Titan.

Send me a couple frames of the raw files and I'll do the same on my R3D's. I don't think you'll get any better results color wise from this camera UW than you get from EPIC. So let me know and I'll pull the frames from the footage.

Best,
Frazier

HAY Mike tried to get birger controls to work with new used redonemx..nothingseems to work..what is the recommended settup for this housing and controls..kozmikunderwater@gmail.com

Just wondering if anyone here is involved with the Costa Concordia salvage operation. Huge engineering effort, would be fascinating to hear about it from a tech diver perspective.

Ok, just sent you a email with some answers to your questions, if you don't set the camera up right and have the right lemo cables plugged in properly its not going to work right.

What he said...

Feel free to give me a call and we can go over it and obviously I will assist with anything that might be broken, but as far as basic configuration and operation, Frazier may be better able to help since it was previously his housing and knows its specific setup as there were a few different versions over time.

IIRC it is fairly simple. The circuit board gets plugged into the birger mount and there are cables from the circuit board to the switches mounted in the housing. Once attached the circuit board will power up through the cable to the birger and you actuate the initialize switch and then the iris and focus should work as you actuate those switches.

It has to go into the right connector on the Birger, if it's not in the right one it won't work at all. I think as I recall the middle one on the front housing connector. But no guarantees. It's been a while. And he has to also have lemo to the power.

Mike, I sent him some help and answers. Tripod bottom plate?? Call me.

If you don't initialize using the top control on the housing it won't control up and down Iris. And S4i must be checked in the RED One Menu.

Hey guys, just doing a bit of market research for a client. What brand wetsuits do you prefer for diving? Any features that are a must have for under water filming (I imagine you often are trying to extend your dive time longer than recreational divers might, and sometimes in harsher conditions)?

How about dry suits? Any new innovations that you see coming that could help out your profession/diving in general?

thanks mike n frasier..i will try the middle plug and reset the menu tomorrow..kozmik
