  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

Gentlemen,

In the interest of being added to the e-mail list we have going on, please post your e-mails on the forum so any of us already on the list can add you to the recipients, otherwise you might loose a few important e-mails.
I was having everybody send them privately but you can send them to me Rudi, Johnny etc. I would think it would be best to not have emails in open.

Very true about the sea water acuity. I was diving with Red Epic at Lembeh Straits in April and its a place renown for muck diving and not for clear water but I was shooting some wide shots and never once I encountered magenta problem. In another shoot at Bali I was at 5 to 6m max close to shore and again no colour problem. Bali Balangan beach has poor visibility. Seems to correlate with others on poor water visibility has little effect on colour cast on the Epic. Still need further test to be sure. What about open air swimming pool water? Its always filtrated and no more than 2m but I never encounter magenta cast. Fresh (swimming pool ) water is different?

cheers

David

I went to Molokini Today, tried to get crazy vis.. it had 80-100ft vis.. Well I have only seen vis below 100ft 3 times like EVER... yay for murphy and laws.

I do have this issue very bad but, for one reason or another, I seem to be shooting only in crystal clear tropical waters with low plankton (contamination).
Graeme, it is very easy for me to recreate shots like these since I did my test-shots on a wreck at 60 feet.
I can re-run these tests under various conditions, modified Epics etc...
You have my time, gear and fair expertise at your disposal!
i just want the Epic to be epic underwater :-)

2nd this as well....i had mentioned for me in locations with just brissling blue water and very clean is where it usually shows up. Which seems to lead again to is any UV or IR penetrating? or the IR filter causing an issue? I think with pulling off the OLPF and replacing it with a clear filter is another key test to do...

Is the IR filter removable at all ? and if it is what would replace it, perhaps an absorbent IR filter or clear glass ?

Dave, no it's not recommended to remove it.

Longimanus and free diver, that rocks John, music is perfect, very Matrix-esque. That was Deep Epic and Epic Monochrome?

Greg- Please add me to the list as well- thanks!!

Here comes probably a really stupid question...
Anyone using a terradek bolt with your UV housings? I guess the metal casing would shield the camera a bit but some have carbon housings.. and I guess the water will bring down the range quite a bit but i figure you guys could give me a firm answer, like "forget it" or such :).

We are about to shoot a really cool commercial both on a reef and then also chroma key elements (probably we do redscreen) in big cristal clear tank in LA. So any advices for such setup is greatly welcome.

The client wants to use a alexa specific housing with video tap and FF on surface. I think I would prefer epic (they got a housing for that aswell) but then they do not have any electronic / on surface FF system. But I figure that they will be on super wide lenses and shot quite large / no macro anyway so focus is not that critical as the composite elements are quite big (about human size) I would think you shoot with something like the tokina 11-16mm or such.

or?

Bjorn,

Red screen underwater is not a good idea, unless you shoot it in very clean, clear water with tons of light, the red channel is too dirty otherwise. But you'd be surprised how well greenscreen or blue works.

Of course Epic is better for chroma work, resolution makes a big difference, I don't have to explain that to you. Gates (www.Gateshousings.com) has a remote controller for focus that works with their Epic housing, and an HDI video feed as well of course, so you can control all that stuff from the surface. John Ellerbrock, the president of Gates, posts on this thread regularly, you can ask him about it directly.

I would recommend the Nikon 10-24 over the Tokina 11-16. Not only is it wider but its corner sharpness is much better than the Tokina's, which is a factor underwater.

FYI everyone.

Best luck we've had so far is Greg's UV test on land. I'm getting a RED optical expert to help me understand what we're seeing and our sensor team. I'd like to address this particular issue first. I think it could be key.

Just a update of what has been going on Mailing. Anybody who cares to see what the raw data I produced can be found here.

I used the Keldan UV Modules that run at 400nm to shoot UV directly into two different cameras one the 60D canon and RED Epic.
I used the Keldan Flux Modules that run full color spectrum to shoot full color spectrum into 60D and RED Epic

I tested the following,
UV with no filter, UV with UV[0] Filter (Does not block enough UV), A full blue blocker filter.
Flux with No Filter, Flux with UV[0] Filter, Flux with Blue Blocker

Here is where the data gets interesting.. The UV and UV Filter version of UV produces massive magenta its PURPLE.. Whereas on the Canon its deep blue on both tests with UV. The blue blocker on Epic and 60D produce the same results in histogram so this is telling that its something happening with either blue or with UV but I am leaning towards UV For sure. I wish I had a "Blue Light" I guess its time to go to K-Mart to get the blue light special?!?!

As for the Flux Modules the Epic and Canon preform fantastically.

Also, I dragged two camera's down and shot side by side shots with 60D vs RED Epic. 20m Deep shots can be seen here.

Few reef shots here too
