The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

Michael,

Do you make a 2d version for the Epic?

I'm looking for a housing sub 5k to shoot underwater and in "hurricane" conditions above water.

With the direction this discussion went, I'm wondering (even though it was clearly stated in the original post that referred to it in passing) if people understand that my Aero3D™ mirror rig is for normal topside use - nothing to do with underwater or the arguments of how much interaxial or post-convergence you can get away with when shooting underwater - which is typically significantly more than you can get away with for surface work.

The Aero3D is a relatively low-cost rig (sub-$5000) priced to compete in the range of the 3D film factory and Hurricane rigs but designed to be both lighter and much more solid and square (i.e. camera and mirror alignment) than those units.

Michael,

Maybe I created more confusion. Yes, we make and have made many housings for Epic, shooting normal 2D underwater. I was the first one to build a housing for the original REDONE (Steve Gibby's serial number 8) and the first to build housings for the Epic.

Either the original version (shown below and priced just a bit above $5K) - or if you use shorter SLR type lenses (or something like the Duclos 11-16 PL conversion)- the new shorter version of our housing (UWEpic-SLP) will work well, and at about 12 pounds may be easier to handle for surface use. It is priced at $4500, so it fits your sub $5K budget. Delivery is 2-4 weeks after receipt of order/payment.

The original Epic/Scarlet housing shown below ($5795) weighs about 17 pounds - and easily accommodates virtually any configuration of Epic likely to be used by a professional, with aluminum frontplate; solid handle mount wings and mounting points for lights and such; provision for RED bricks, Anton Bauer, RED Pro battery module, etc., internal RED 5" LCD which also provides ability to do focus and iris with the RED electronic mounts (or many other functions) using the LCD buttons (which is NOT possible with an aftermarket monitor like the DP4); and numerous off the shelf port options that accommodate both SLR lenses and large cinema lense - inexpensive 6" and 8" acrylic domes and 8" glass dome, extensions, long macro ports, etc. It is also fairly easy to do a Nikonos mount frontplate as I mentioned in an earlier post for those who would like
that option.

The AquaVideo™ UWEpic-SLP (for "Shorter Length PVC" or "SLR lenses PVC" take your pick) takes off about 7" in length, a little bit in diameter, and weighs about 5 lbs. less and still accommodates the RED LCD with the controls. It is geared more for those using SLR lenses, but is not limited to them as it is easy to accommodate the same lenses as the regular Epic using different front plates (similar to how Gates does it with Deep Epic). The aluminum version will be essentially the same - just out of aluminum so about 4 pounds heavier and $1900 more expensive.

Pricing :
UWEpic-SLP $4500 USD (PVC)
UWEpic-SLA $6399 USD (Aluminum)

90 watt hour custom lithium ion batteries $399 charger $149.00

This grab was really tough to tweak, taken a day after we got skunked by high winds and heavy seas, the turbidity was intense, a fog-like haze blanketed the bottom to about ten or so up the water column.
Just to give you a idea of the size of these animals though, here is Jim Killion and one of Stuart's divemasters, Liz, being circled by a pretty intense female. (Aren't they all :iagree: )

NICE !

really interesting that so many of you underwater shooters (with Epics) were all shooting the Hammerheads...same place/same time ( ....6-7 of you and what 8-9 Epics...?)

Soon as the nuclear tradewinds back down here in Maui I will be shooting twice a week. I was hoping tomorrow would be good but no dice..

Exquisite footage- glad the trip worked out in the end!
Would have loved to be there...
Loved it.

Hammerhead fun

Hammerhead fun

Shot of the day for me, tried to bite the dome off twice, was loving it. Shot some vertical footage also. Last day of the trip.

Frazier, it's well-known you strap fish guts around your housing, shampoo with cod liver oil, and brush your teeth with sushi-flavored toothpaste, that's why you get those shots :-)

Rouge 'Red Sea' finally caught up with me, big plans in the works...

Yes, that would be true. Footage is exporting now, hope to have it all done soon. Nice looking housing Tom, congrats. Love the finish. Joy bottle filled with chum in my BCD, you saw me doing that??

Yes, I did.

For anyone who wants to know, Frazier is possibly one of the most fearless big shark cam guys I have ever met. Needless to say, these critters can be intimidating, very intimidating, especially with a stirred-up and hungry rat-pack of 'em, and a water column full of blood, guts and tasty chum. After seeing him in action with the big Tigers, and more recently, even bigger Hammerheads, you just gotta ask yerself...

...are u completely feckin' nuts?

But that's why he gets hired.

You want that special shot? You talk to Frazier. Simple really.

UNDERWATER HOUSING Comprehensive Test & Review

Hi guys. I've been wanting to get the Epic Underwater Housings together for a comprehensive test for quite sometime and have been in discussions with fellow RU and builders for a while. There are several great options and more coming.

Epic Underwater Housing Options:

Gates
Deep-X
Amphibico
Aquavideo
Nauticam
Subspace
Equinox

I'd like to get experienced divers, shooters and builders together in Kona Hawaii, late March 2013 to put these systems through their paces. This is not an official test for a publication, just a collaboration of friends and colleges looking to gain experience we can all benefit from. Results to be posted on RU.

My previous test work can be seen here: SALT III: High Speed Lens Shootout
http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...igh-Speed-Lens-Shootout-quot-WFO-quot-Results

I'll post a new thread as well to track the progress of this project.

Man, you always made me laugh Tom...wish we had gotten to dive together more on this last trip and spend more time. Yes, we are both nuts and love sharks that's for sure. BTW, I got those two shots the last day. No current, clear to the bottom, sunshine. You gotta love that. Timing is everything. Got lucky.

We'll do another trip together soon. I may be going back over for another 5 day 4 night to Bimini and film them again. Only 3 days of diving with them this time but three tank trip. Small group. Limited to 8 divers. 3 spots are sold already. Space for 5 more. Two bedroom shared accommodations. If you know of somebody that wants to go let me know via pm or email. By mid March.

All Hammers again. Then Tigers first of March again, then Oceanics.

Great to see you, Jim and Ron there.

Thanks for the kind comments, you made me laugh tonight.

Will try to post a edit of the biting sequences, the footage is crunching now.

John Bantin just sent me this photo of me with the Hammerhead, he shot this same time as one of the bite shots I got. Photography by John Bantin.

Best,
Frazier
