  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Gentleman's Underwater Bubble Blower Thread

The three grabs you refer to, #1 Aquavideo setup, #2 and #3, Rob McDonald stills, SLR & housing unknown.

Please check facts before posting.

I thought I deleted that withina few minutes of posting - when I realized they weren't from epic - surprised anybody saw it.

Johnny,

You got to be teasing about the app to work the atom???

That app is actually amazing....we can do all of the lens pairing with it and more....No joke. It's an app from 3ality for iphone or ipad. In fact a must have. Thank goodness i work with someone that has an iphone.

Nah---RED is terrific and opening up new roads in the digital realm. Certainly a game changer...but i mean mass sales and everyone has one or has to have one....like a cell phone, or wait an i-phone. Well, i've never owned and iphone or a cell that cost more than $20. I do now feel the need to own an iphone, but only for the app that 3ality has that integrates the Atom rig to it, in order to calibrate the cameras & lenses.
The app from 3ality has amazing capabilities and is a real asset to your 3D tool box.

Johnny and Ross,

Just Heard from Joey at 3Ality and man is that iphone set up sweet!!! Im looking forward to getting my hands on it!

Catching up

Catching up

I’m now catching up to the last 29 pages having been rather occupied with new product developments (as always). 2013 is shaping up well, a big year in 4K (see my next post).

I just want to thank everyone that has spoken well of Gates in this forum – Ron, Michael, James, Mark, Johnny, and Ross to name just a few. The entire Gates Gang works very hard toward *your* success. If you are part of the Gates family, you know this. Our reward is seeing the best underwater images in the world captured by your hand with a Gates.

If you don’t yet own a Gates, we’ll just have to work a little harder to earn your patronage.

Regards to all,

Sony 4K UHD TV

Sony 4K UHD TV

I was graciously invited to a private demo of the new Sony 84” 4K TV (XBR-84X900) Monday to view several underwater and timelapse cuts in full resolution. For $25K you get a plethora of content that includes several Howard Hall pieces (see titles below).

What we learned:

  • As you might expect, Howard’s underwater images are stunning in 4K. Simply stunning.
  • No surprise: critical focus is…well, critical. If you don’t have a way to view your 4K work in full res….woe could be thee.
  • Surprise: framerates are *very* important. The detail on non-moving subjects is superb. But when the subject moves, 24P motion blur that you don’t mind in the cinema is suddenly obvious. We left the demo agreeing that higher frame rates for this viewing medium may be necessary. 30 fps? 48fps? Where the Hobbit is getting hammered for HFR, natural history would only benefit.
  • Underwater optics. Of course this is important. But…and this is my $.02…the discussions about optics on this forum are tinkering around the corners (pun intended). What we have now is working, and amazingly so. Can underwater optics improve? Sure, and the innovations to come (from Gates and others) will be breathtaking in 4K and higher. In other words: underwater optics are not the limiting factor for great images. Critical focus, composition, lighting, behavior…all the things that only you, the cameraman, can achieve.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

This is the time of year to take stock of our blessings. How fortunate we are to dive amazing places, create world class underwater images, and if you’re really lucky – make the equipment to do so.

From everyone here at Gates, wishing you the best this holiday season, and a booming 2013.

Many thanks John, a very Merry Xmas to you as well.

Lots of exciting projects in the works, always good to know that Howard Hall and the Gates products remain an established, brutally unforgiving, and astonishingly high quality benchmark for all pro u/w shooters to consider. Aim high. Anything less is laziness.

Without that mark to target, we would be merely, and predictably, a dull average.

Here's to innovation, precision, and excellence. Cheers all!

Amen, brother. Got to see some of my footage on the 40' screen at RSH, full 4K, full res. Man, oh man, does it look beautiful when it's spot on. Was trying to decide on whether to buy another Epic (maybe the Monochrome) but now thinking about investing in a 4K display...

From our neck of the woods, we would like to wish our current and future customers as well as competitors a very Merry Christmas and successful New Year too.

As an underwater housing manufacturer, we can't assure your critical focus, composition, lighting or guarantee the animal behavior for you. However, we have worked hard and smart to help you in achieving all of those features by creating the smallest, the lightest, the quickest to set up and arguably the most reliable housings ever made for the RED Epic.

As an underwater housing manufacturer, we managed to offer one thing for you: the first and currently still the only optics for the motion picture that produces sharp and undistorted images underwater. Not just at f/8, but in all lighting conditions. The first underwater optics worthy RED Epic sensor and the first optics impatiently waiting for the Dragon to push the boundaries even further.

We haven't finished yet. We have just started: it was our year one. We have many exciting options and products coming up. Like RED, we believe in modularity and inexpensive upgradability. We are testing optical performance at 10k and beyond and learning how much more we can improve in underwater imaging. We believe that image quality is important.

If we have not yet achieved a dream housing for you, we are listening. We work hard to innovate and provide new options that were not previously available.

Thank you for your support and I hope to see you guys in the water making stunning images that we are all so passionate about.

To you and yours...cheers mate!

Hi all, just wondering of anyone has had any experience with using Shark Shields? Do they interrupt with cameras due to their electronic signal transmissions etc? Asking as I've just got product support for the Shark Project I'm looking to put together. Also in discussions with an entity who approached me with the notion to supply all filming and support gear, cams, lenses etc depending on the inventory requests. Cool beans.

Personally I'm happy to be in the water with all manner of big fish but the isolation, lack of pro medical care and delay times I'll be facing means I have to look at reducing all risk bearing factors to a minimum.

About those shark shields? Anyone?

Cheers,
Mark.

Thank you John for your insight into the full resolution of 4k and the future.
My respect to you, your company and your products.

Wishing all members of this forum, without exception a peaceful holidays.

To Johnny, Ron and Tom- thanks for your camaraderie and open dialogues off forum.
We are all indeed fortunate to be in a profession of innovation, exploration, creativity and beauty.

May this upcoming year be one of healthy competition and continued visual innovation.
