  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Future of Follow Focus Now- Optitron by OptiTek

Well Thank you Will.
Still (very)few left :)

Will you make motors as well for PL lenses and such? Like you controller and it would be nice to use the same for all.

We won't make our motors but we are at this time working on integrating some "off shelf" motors that offer good price/performance combination.

Heden is definitely up on the list but the prices for Heden may prove prohibitive.....

While you're at it Jacek, please consider this: Have the Optitron v2 integrate: focus and iris control internal in the lenses, plus a slider for zoom control via external motor and snap-on gears.

Personally I'd rather have a separate zoom remote than a 3-in-1 remote that does everything. The focus puller has enough to do with focus and maybe sometimes a little iris change. Zoom is better handled by the cameraman in my opinion.

Nils, I understand that. I shoot docs alone, however, so for me the ideal setup is to have fly-by-wire control of all three parameters. Possibly with an external controller, e.g. a rocker, for mounting the zoom control on the opposite side of the camera.

For reframing we are looking at a simple drive. no gears involved. separate from the OptiTron.
I don't really recommend zooming during recording so the zoom control can be pretty basic.
We still read zoom position encoder data...

Yes the encoder data is useful for the FX crew.
Also we are at the dawn of green screen image matching to the talent and for cine lenses it has just begun with an initiative. The very early stages were mentioned at a recent SMPTE meeting.
The still lenses allow to leap the (cine lens)data gathering stage and use the EXIF data to retrieve lens profiles from Photoshop and use these for corrections and matching. If that makes sense to you....
Yes I would love to pass the data to the camera and embed it . Unfortunately that's where Red has traditionally drawn the line.
Maybe that will change now... Here is to hope....

Yes that's the plan.
In wireless configuration.
We also have some lens matching tricks up the OptiTron sleeve :)

The wireless receiver is required for it. After we release it the S/W upgrades will come- Stereo included :)

We should have some videos from real jobs very soon here :)
