  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The Future of Follow Focus Now- Optitron by OptiTek

This looks like a rehoused Birger EF-Mount. Does it still work with the Birger/VF Impero controller? Will you offer a conversion kit for those of us that already own a Birger mount?

Still waiting on a wireless focus solution for stills on an Epic. Seems so weird that it has taken so long. Have to say the Epic design with interchangeable mounts sure makes after market options look clean.

OK Nils,
The quote you provided about parfocality points to back focus. You need both wide and long ends on he zoom to be the same- otherwise the zoom BF is not set correctly- by definition.
That's probably a topic for another thread.
We'll absolutely make video that shows how smooth the pulls are- that is a good suggestion- thank you
If you have any other suggestions for video please let me know- we are remaking this one to make it more accessible...

Yes I've contacted Jarred about it. He is cool with it since it's not connected to the camera (electrically)

Neither is the Canon FD mount... hint hint!

Mike

Red found out Nikon is a lot trickier than Canon / than they expected, I'm interested to see just how soon the Nikon version appears.

We already have the iris control on the Nikon Prolock- for us Nikon is easier to implement...

Email me NAthaniel and I'll give you the info. Nikon will come as soon as the canon settles on a steady path.

If you look at a 24-70 you will see different marking points for the different lens lengths on the actual witness marks. To me, this seems to say line up the number with this line if you are at 24mm and with this line if you are at 70mm.

I don't think the 24-70 is parfocal, and I don't think Canon has ever claimed it is.

Exactly. For example on the 24-105 :

There are different witness marks for the different focal lengths, so even Canon recognizes that the lens doesn't keep focus while zooming in/out... There's no work around I know of to avoid that issue.

Thanks Jacek.
It would be nice to see the controller closer and from different angles, to see how it fits in the hand and camera mounted on the rods.

Yes I noticed that , too.
I don't know why the zooms are setup short, probably to assure infinity at all times, even when the camera flange is off...
To rectify this we recommend adjusting the back focus on the zooms properly. It's the easiest of adjustments.
Again, this is a back focus issue, not parfocality (unless somebody got their terminology screwed up- wouldn't be the first time)
Parfocality is when both ends of the zoom are the same (in focus) and it goes out of focus in the middle
What we do NOT recommend is adjusting the camera flange to these zooms even though it's so easy and quick on the Epic.
However(there-I said it:blush:) I've seen a lot of Epics and Scarlets lately with their flange setup short to match still zooms. Definitely not cool especially when swapping mounts to PL...

I think most of these zooms are not parfocal, meaning the focus changes while zooming, not necessarily in a linear or foreseeable way. But I'd love to be proven wrong.
Out of curiosity, how would you adjust the back focus on Canon still zooms ? I've never heard anything about that ? On the camera, of course, but on the lenses ?

Absolutely Kyle!!!!
The transmitter is already installed and programmed in the OptiTron.
We'll be offering matching receiver as soon as the dust settles on the initial units.
BTW the wireless module we use is rated @ 100m (300+ft)

Hi Jacek

What frequency is the wireless working on - I'm sure you know that free to use frequencies vary between world territories.

Thanks
E

Hi jacek, I checked your website but it seems there is still no page for ordering this canon mount. What is the best way to order one?. Thanks...!

I have seen this working at Jacek's shop - did some real tests for a few hours. It just works. $3600 is NOTHING compared to how much you will save on lenses.

Features I would want to see, which I thought of since I saw it (which may have been implemented since I saw it - 3 speeds - 1/2 rotation for travel (fast) - full rotation (normal) and two rotations (slow - here I remove the hard stops and turn more than once to get the whole lens.

I would also like "got to distance = x" hard buttons - 3 would br perfect.

But even without that it's already awesome. I really had to wrap my mind around what would be possible with this thing while he was showing it to me.

Thank you Rob,
Gunnar email me and we'll get you going...

BTW Rob,
The features you've mentioned are already included...
Eric the wireless is an industrial version of bluetooth/zigbee

Jacek, this is one of the most amazing new gear recently, will follow this very closely.
Will be 1st AC on a feature coming spring and in the akward position to focus EF lenses, the Optitron looks like the best solution!
Any idea what the "regular" price will be and pricing on the wireless receiver?
