I am ecstatic to announce that the first RED Weapon 8K in the world has landed in Los Angeles, CA

Last week I posted a rather cryptic Instagram video eluding to the 8K VV's arrival.

Today, it is now in my hands. And a couple other folks got the good news this week as well.

That short film was the original promotional film shown in theaters before White Christmas, the first film shot on VistaVision, was released in theaters.

The RED Weapon 8K VV is slightly wider than VistaVision and hold a lot of creative potential. It's a format size that has played a very important role in my career in film and now will play an even more important role in the era of digital cinema cameras. This to me is one of the most exciting times in motion picture production and I enjoy creating bigger than life moving images. Camera technology has advanced so very much and this in many ways represents the bleeding edge in motion picture entertainment. Small camera, big images.

I'd like to thank RED and Jarred Land in particular for working extremely hard to push this camera out. These aren't easy to make at all and the effort put into this machine by everybody involved is extremely appreciated.

I have a bit of time before I'm off filming for a couple months with this beast on a fairly large shoot. I'll try to produce and book as many shoots before and after that shoot before the year is out as I possibly can.

I want images from this camera to end up on Cinema Screens, UHD Broadcast, Streaming, Special Exhibition, and even IMAX screens. I'll do my best to make that happen.

2016. 8K VV has landed.

Congrats Phil! This is good news but as you were expected to get an early one as you are somewhat of a beta tester, the really good news in your post is that some others have received theirs as well.

That suggests some of those precious 8k sensors are being allocated to the depositors. Very good news indeed.

Nice news Phil! :smiley::smiley::smiley:

i thought they have been shipping since last year? Have they really not shipped ANY? Except now.

Great new Phil. I would love to see pictures of the new sensor and the size of the OLPFS and new lense mounts you need. and anything else that's new with VV

Great new Phil. I would love to see pictures of the new sensor and the size of the OLPFS and new lense mounts you need. and anything else that's new with VV

Sure thing. I got 3 OLPFs and the Low Light Optimized OLPF was installed in the brain. These are larger than the 6K OLPFs of course. Same idea though. One turn of the bolt and you pop in/out the OLPF.

If you look at the picture that is indeed the 8K MG PL Mount and says as much in the lower left corner of the mount. It is different than the 6K mount as the internal flocking and port needed a newer design to accommodate the larger sensor.

The DSMC Canon EF Mount still works, which I leared in February when we shot Forged. Though I do recall Jarred saying there might be a new on at some point. I actually asked that question when I first saw the Raven's fixed EF mount as the locking collar design is pretty damn sexy.

I don't know anything about the Nikon mount. Leica Mount should work. I have one here to test. PL Motion Mount for 6K, I can't imagine that will work correctly, but hell I'll try it out. Why not :)

Running the Sensor Calibration now. It's "more sensor" and likely will take a bit longer. Going to do a whole bunch of camera tests today to make sure everything is in ship shape.

Congrats, Phil!

Do you ever do still photo shoots with DSMC? 8K Dragon stills seems awesome.
