Just a word from "the border of the empire"... Here Sky and the major tv are SLOWLY moving from SD to HD.

Yeah, film and TV are pretty different beasts. I just did a job for a high-level network last week and the "master footage" was handed to me on Betacam SP tapes. That's not just SD, but it's analog SD... interlaced SD... which means the measured resolution is down in the very low hundreds of lines (maybe that's being generous?). Believe me, I would have killed for 1080p footage in this situation.

In the land of Hobbits and Spidermen and Aliens, of course there's absolutely no question you want to be working in 4K. I have a feeling even that number will increase before too long. But there are also a lot of people working on material that's not at that scale. I completely understand where Jim is coming from and I agree with the philosophy up and down... I just don't think the transition is going to happen as soon as he would like. Maybe I'll be proved wrong... and I'd love it if that's the case.

Oh, and you my want to continue its use... studies show it also helps you sleep more efficiently. (I) tried it and find that I waken on average one hour earlier, fully refreshed.

Without saying anything about the release of RedRay/Redcode RGB (because I know you'd rather not), can you say when we can expect to learn a little more about it; 1 month, 6 months, a year?

Me guessing here again, but when it first was mentioned, the potential was immediately quite mindblowing... in the smaller scales. Sending a 1k¤ box with your movie for screening at festivals seemed rather on the cheapo side etc etc.

BUT that's all small-scale...

To give RedRay (and Redcode RGB) the impact it may have, there has to be done some serious and silent behind the scenes work, while more and more films and TV productions have been shot in 4k.

If Redcode RGB and Rocket II, makes for a much simpler way to finnish and deliver in 4k, all (or at least many more of) the masters will be in 4k, and if the content is there, the technology will get broad acceptance. Without the content, it will be a geeky small-market happening.

With the content, the infrastructure will catch on.

RedcodeRGB delivered over the net to cinemas with a RedRay player, can be the first step. From the specs on Red.Com, it already allows for encrypted files, which would be a neccisisity for the studios to go on board.

Another good thing is that it looks like RED is no longer the enemy of the industry, but have become a major partner and player. That makes infrastructural changes not so impossible. It is hard to get changes done only with the Indy Crowd in your pocket. That seems not to be the case these days.

With all that ready, and a quick rollout of 4k projectors (but often paired with 2k servers) the market is allready here...

This can happen quickly in the Cinematic Release segment (much quicker than the adaption of DCP was), and then people will want it at home, too...

And, s has been mentioned here, that's probably gonna start with sports.

Couldn't agree more...I've always felt that as soon as 4k displays are available to consumers that big sporting events will start being broadcasted in 4k. Then once consumers get a taste for it, the transition will start, just like what happened with HD.

When everybody was going HD and so many formats were being introduced... and the major networks (who at the time were my major clients) were all wafting about what HD format they would use, I decided to wait it out and not purchase an HD camera. Soon after I heard about Red (displaying non working models at NAB) and on a fluke decided to put down my 1K. Had nothing to lose. I'm so glad I did that... never did buy one of those HD cameras.

What Jim and the REd team have achieved is amazing, especially for the independent filmmaker. It wasn't long ago that films like El Mariachi and Clerks where being made for a few thousand $, showing that people with no Hollywood experience could make it.

Technology is just a tool for creating really exciting stories for other to view, like, dislike, etc. But technology has to advance to help the creatives achive their dreams.

Technology is now at a stage where its possible to shoot 5K, color correct, do digital effects and release to cinemas all from. The comfort of your own home. Technology is a tool and if we always wait for next big thing, then we'll be waiting for everything and new buy!

Technology will always be enhanced but now we have products that are future proof for the coming years.

RED has changed the way Hollywood is making films. REDRay will change the way we get content, distribute content to cinemas, venues and to the home.

just as with RED ONE, scaleability and price point will be keys...to make the box ubiquitous and able to serve multiple end users. to serve the entire food chain. their greatest success has been getting lots and lots of RED ONEs into many hands.

it feels as if RED RAY has been cooked for awhile, working models have been used at RED events for going on two years now, I think - the ones at Las Vegas last year seemed darned close to release models.

I don't think of RED as a company to withhold technology, but I think the strategy is going to be to get as many EPIC cameras out the door as possible -- and SCARLETs, no small feat in itself, and then uncork a first edition of RED RAY which will be scaleable across all platforms. Once Epson is ready with a projector to match. No more piece-mealing packages together. It will be an affordable turn-key 4K solution.

That will be a happy day.

At that point, they will have huge pent up demand and an even bigger user base clamoring for these items. I hope the production lines will be ready.

I agree with that Gunleik and always enjoy reading your posts. Anyways, it was always my opinion that Red started working on RedRay/Redcode RGB and created a working prototype a few years ago. Threfore, they figured they were ready to release two models so they announced that it would happen in 09. However, somewhere during the development they realized they had something much bigger and possibly more (sorry to use the phrase) "game changing" than they initially had thought and changed their strategy to a much larger scale. So they decided to take a different approach and as you said work more from behind the scene getting acceptance and creating a bulletproof delivery system for theaters and home alike. Therefore, once it is released it will immediately gain acceptance, instead of just releasing/selling RedRay/Redcode RGB and hoping for the best they took a proactive approach to ensure it's success. Anyways, sorry for my rambling thoughts. I'm only half awake:blink:

I had a great 6 days in Fiji with my wife. When I returned, I went to the Spider-man shoot and I fell over dead with what I saw. Unbelievable images and a crew that was so happy with what was going on. It is hard to describe the feeling that I have... EPIC is delivering images that beat anything I could have imagined. Quite a rush of adrenaline that has kept me awake since...

Oh how I just wish you would announce the release of Scarlet/Epic light this Christmas’s, as a gift for me and all other early waiting RED fans with tight budgets. I would hop on the first flight to CA from Sweden to get me a camera.
No I have to bye a Panasonic AG-AF101 just to be able to work this coming spring but it’s so painful to shoot GOP highly compressed codec’s in 1080p and lack of all other astonishing features your camera offers.
I have been trying to wait since the spring of 09, I have even declined a couple of jobs just because I haven’t had a camera, I know you guys are working hard and really putting all effort in this project, that’s what I love about RED. But I just can’t refuse to take this job in early February and its so depressing to stumble on what seams to be the finish line.
