  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thanks to RED - won Gold at ACS awards for Epic moco timelapse piece!

Forgot to mention - the clip is on YouTube in 2K res - if you change the resolution option to 'Original'. Nice to watch for those with 27"-30" Cinema Displays :)

Long story short - we shoot 50-100fps passes of the skater on the camBLOCK, then drop in some NDs and run the same move timestretched at 1-2fps on the background. Then a buttload of compositing & grading :)

I'm sorry, I'm very interested in this and have never worked with a motion control system before. (although I am very familar with them.) I just want to make sure I got the math right. The only thing you changed was the fame sampling rate, the move on the motion control rig was the same duration. I.E the move was for both comped shots was the same, let's say 5 seconds, but the capture rate for the camera was different, 100fps and 2fps? Correct?

Also, I have a question, would this be possible, if the moves WEREN'T the same duration...your skateborarder was let's say 10 seconds...and your plate duration was MUCH longer, by some multiple of of that, like 10 hours? Would the shots still align?

Anyway, great work. Thanks for sharing.

From what I'm seeing the moco move is the same, but the duration wildly different. For the backgrounds it looks like most shots will have taken at least 20 minutes, where the live and slomo shots of the skater were much quicker. If you know your final delivery fps then it's pretty easy to work out the required duration of each shot.

camBLOCK has a handy time feature that lets you expand or compress a move using either duration (mm:ss) or a multiplier (eg. realtime move x10).

An example of one of our shots:
1. Skater pass shot at 50fps takes 10 seconds from Start keyframe -> End keyframe.
2. Background plate at 1fps takes 8.3 minutes from Start keyframe -> End keyframe.

As long as you ND your lens to the correct exposure for the second pass it makes the compositing a lot easier. (i.e. you obviously want to avoid any aperture shift between passes - and the dramatically longer shutter speed on the background plate lets a lot more light in)

We're working on a little behind-the-scenes clip that shows the setup of each shot. Should be out soon.

thanks Dan i have seen something similar like this years ago but that was done on tripod not motion so it makes everything harder for composite.
i knew it from the beginning since you posted this video on epic showcase thread
well deserved win! congrats :)

Really amazing combo of effects. I imagine we will see lots of people trying to copy this look. I know I will :)
