  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I wasn't sure if I should upgrade my Weapon Helium to Monstro, so I asked my reseller for a demo of Monstro. Well, now I want to upgrade. See this...

Which "35mm" and "50mm" lenses were used?
 
Yeppers and that's where the general difference really lands in regards to noise floor. You should be seeing a bit over a stop better into the dark and this will also manifest in in the noise/grain/texture.

Curious if this is new calibration or old calibration if you have the chance to answer that Christoph. Thanks!
 
That is a significant difference. I wonder how it would be when you put an abt-speedmount on your helium and use the same(50mm) lens on both camera's with iso set to 1400 on the helium and leave everything the same on the Monstro.

Not 1400, it should be half of the 2000 iso.

iso 1000 with the speedmount.

That green tint in the shadows tho...

I’ve honestly come to love my Helium, but I can’t stand the green shadows. It’s so obnoxious. Will there never be a fix for this?
 
That is very dramatic indeed. I think RED nailed it so well, some people are going to be salty! Mind you, most of that noise from the Helium is chrominance noise, which is mostly removable without any side-effects. Well, that's based on my experience with noisy photos, from both CCD and CMOS sensors.

Observation: noise patterns are identical between the two.

Good question. I wonder if the small difference in ISO would mean much though - you never know.
 
Wow, that is interesting. I must say I'm surprised with the amount of noise from Helium in the first image. Looking at that sky ISO 2000 doesn't look very usable on Helium even with noise reduction.
Maybe I'm wrong.

So monstro likely has about a stop extra in the shadows and highlights? Interesting that monstro also looks a bit less contrasty in the shadows, I wonder if they would look a bit closer if normalized since lower contrast tends to flatten noise out and hide it a bit. I assume this was all with the new ISO calibration? Meaning about 8 stops of highlights for helium and 9 stops for monstro at these settings?

Very curious about the Venice test, I've heard some very positive things from people using Venice so perhaps it's a real contender against Monstro but clearly it has it's work cut out for it.

High ISO performance varies on WB and light source spectrum coverage.
You can get better results in a different scenario.

Also, that is an 1:1 8K noise crop and not only it is usable, it should be borderline invisible in motion.
 
As discussed in other threads.
Helium with it´s smaller imager could gain about a stop if a lens with smaller image circle is used.

But yes, to me me these tests are in line with my findings. What makes Monstro amazing is it´s low noise especially in it´s blue channel, but also in R and G.

Helium stil also have more issues with out of gamut colors. Burned out coloured highlights goes bonkers on helium, where as monstro curve of towards white / more desaturated before the white point hits.

If shooting underexposed with hard highlights with tungsten and balancing in camera for example, then monstro really shines in comparison. If all channels got equal amount of light / if you are in a daylight setup or balancing using filters then underexposure is not as sensitive and the difference is not as apparent.


Here is an image I made that shows the differences magnified. Basically each color channel showed separately at 5000ISO at 1:1 on a 1920x1080 crop from 8k. I think you dont need to be a image technican to find a winner.. :)

Then we should all remember helium is a really amazing camera, but monstro is simply better. Like a lot better. Better than anything else i tested.

For the price it got to be better! Cool comparison. Hopefully in theres an great opportunity to upgrade from the helium in the future. Now I just want to enjoy my helium for a few years more.

Holy crap. That is a dramatic difference. I wonder what DxO score Monstro will get? ;-)

Someone is also interested in a DR test with Xylia chart on Alexa, Venice, Monstro, BM, Dragon, Helium?
Towards the end of the month I have some free time so I can do a bit of testing, if you have suggestions of what you are interested in seeing I do what I can. ;)
