  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Surprise...

Holy crap, there was some gorgeous, gorgeous footage in that reel. If that doesn't sell a gazillion cameras, I don't know what will. Can hardly wait for my Scarlet, although I'd be almost as pleased to spend a week or so learning from some of the immensely talented cinematographers whose work was represented there.

Two of the many shots that particularly struck me were the shots of the welding/metal working with all the sparks going off and the shot of the girl playing the piano onstage in a bath of golden light. Simply superb!

Thanks to all the folks at RED and the folks who contributed to footage for the reel.

Sweet! So glad to finally see a *downloadable* reel from you guys. Also good to see more finished twentysixmiles footage still floating around... good to know all that work we did wasn't for nothing!

The most beautiful Red footage available
seeing footage at the red store made me want everyone to see what i had
seen, Red at its best and i thought Jim should have bought a giant screen and placed it somewhere in hollywood for all the (x)red haters to see
This does the job..... and then some!

just a few questions
how was this footage processed?
i would like my footage to look this good
I am confident in my creativity but aim to shoot the best i can.
Besides great lighting superspeeds and ultraprimes (RPP soon : )
Can footage processed through final cut and color look this good?

Awesome job Red
I bought(reserved) My red camera when i saw the Porsche images
I had no idea this is what i was going to get
Thank you

It's a nice reminder of the simple fact that anything can be done... anything.

Red 400

Red 400

Hello all -
My name is Michael Cioni and I've edited and supervised the DIs for the 4 Red Reels that have been produced since 2007. We have had so many wonderful submissions over the past couple years for these reels that it's getting harder to fit it all into 5 or 6 minutes! Thanks for helping out with your awesome submissions. Here are some thoughts on the Reel for anyone interested.

CMOS EXPOSURE
As I say to all my clients, it's all in the exposure. In my experience, ideal CMOS exposure is the most critical point in which final color graded image potential resides. I've come across a number of projects that have "correct" exposure (ie: everything falling between 0 and 1023) but it's the way in which the sensor red, green and blue channels (especially the blue) are populated can make all the difference in smoother pictures, better overall dynamic range and less FPN.

4K DI
In order to get Red images to look their best, we do a full debayer in 4k full aperture (in this reel, most files were 4K 16:9, so we performed a full debayer at 4096x2304). We loaded the R3Ds into Quantel Pablo and did an auto-conform against my Final Cut Pro (ProRes SQ) offline. Clips that were not 4K including 3K and 2K underwent a native resolution full debayer and were upscaled to 4096x2304 (Fit Height). The DI was performed on the Quantel Pablo in 4K and graded in Rec709 extended range, 0-1023.

VIEWING
The 264 that Jarred made looks great. If you're seeing noise in the blacks it's probably the LIFT on your monitor. Here is a way in which you can do a quick calibration to make the reel look as good as possible.
If you are using a MAC, goto your Display settings and set the gamma to 2.2 and the white point to D65. Then adjust the brightness to about 75% (this will depend on the model and shipping date of your display, as each factory batch varies a bit).

Thanks again for all the submissions! They really were great to work with and hold up great on the big screen.

Quicktime destroys blacks and gammas the living hell out of all your images. (potentially the reason you're seeing noisy blacks--err greys.)

I've found a gamma correction of .71 prior to compression gets it very close to the source material after Quicktime does its best to ruin your movie.

How about a description for those of us that are without a decent internet connection.

I am shooting in India and the speed of our connection is like 56Kbps dialup, so no chance of downloading :(

Amazing!

Resized to 2560 x1440 at a full screen size (2.56K at 30" display) it looks gorgeous.

Sorry guys, Wayne's World moment coming up...

I'M NOT WORTHY, I'M NOT WORTHY!!!

I agree that was an awesom shot of the man in a wheelchair.
