Support Your Red One: Tripods Revisited

Steadicam?

On the subject of mounts - I would love some recommendations as to Steadicam model for a RED with primes and light weight matte box.... looking to get one shortly for my P2 settup, that will also work with Arri 235 and RED? Is this feasible? Flyer? Glidecam? Don't want to compromise at all - just don't want too much if I don't need it. I have a high end Steadicam operator I will hire when needed for any big projects, so I just wanted a smaller alternative when I operate myself on smaller projects.

Thanks.

Hi Steve,

I'm actually doing a Flyer test tomorrow with my RED and I will be happy to share with you my findings. My gut feeling is that it's just not going to cut it; you're much better off with an Archer that was designed to support cameras in this weight class. I know that for a lot of people, RED is a huge investment and people want to save money wherever possible, but it must be understood that RED is a professional tool and needs professional gear to supplement it. As others have stated, you just can't get by with a low-end tripod and expect to be able to operate properly. In the same vein, I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending a Flyer or especially not a Glidecam system for use with RED at this time. But I will definitely let you know what I find out tomorrow!

Best,

Häakon

I have been one in agreement with that all along. No compromise is acceptable to me either. I learned long ago that replacing the cheap stuff is way more costly than buying the best from the start. Compound that with the poor performance and compromised quality of the outcome, makes it a no-brainer if you make a living in this biz.

I just want to stay as light and agile as possible.

Thanks!

Hi Guys,

I gave Miller a call about B-stock.
Here's their reply.

"You’re in luck, we are having a b-stock sale to liquidate older style heads. I have Arrow model heads available that support up to 44 lbs. There are 3 systems available at 50% off list.

#1417- Arrow Cf- Arrow fluid head, single stage CF tripod, pan handle, and carry case. List: $6935 sale: $3467.50

#1402- Arrow ENG- Arrow fluid head, 2-stage aluminum tripod, pan handle, carry case. List: $ 6575 sale: $3287.50

#1407- Arrow ENG-CF- Arrow fluid head, 2-stage CF tripod, pan handle, carry case. List: $7235 sale: $ 3617.50

All come with a 3 year warranty, heads are lightly used with a scratch or two, (used in shows). Quantities are limited and available on a first come first serve basis."

I just acquired myself a mint-condition Miller Arrow 50 system. So I thought I'd pass this info on to anyone else looking for a good deal on excellent tripods.

I'm seriously considering the ActionCam Red Edition for flying the Red. Gibby had good things to say about it, and the price is right.

As for tripods, I already put in my order for the 2060 with Sachtler sticks. My wallet is lighter, but I don't think I'll regret it.
