Super 16 Mode for Komodo

Not sure if this has been mentioned here but would it be possible to have a resolution and crop closer to Super 16mm on the Komodo? Something in between 4k and 2k? It would be great to be able to use s16 zooms like the Canon 8-64.

I've been hoping for a 3K mode that should roughly achieve S16 aperture and theoretically more frame rates.

This is a perhaps the best place to send the request for RED to definitely see it.

I really wish you could pick just 3 resolutions during firmware installs/updates.

I personally want 4K (Or UHD) 2.33 at 72 fps. (I am 95% sure the hardware can handle it.)

I remember, a half, off hand comment about how they limited the selection of resolution for a decreased boot up time. If the user could pick which 3 resolutions that would be on the camera during a firmware installation it would make everyone happy while reducing the load time.

Mine would be 6k, 6k 2.33, 4K 2.33. Some people need anamorphic, some just need the standard selection, some have really weird needs. I personally love shooting in Widescreen and can use the extra 12 frames.

This topic is relevant to my interests! I'd like to advance that a S16 mode should actually be based on the dimension of the Super16 standard, which I think is 7.41mm by 12.52mm and not specifically 3K. I've found that with my lenses (Optar Illumina S16 primes) that something around 3.2k is a clean crop on all focal lengths.

I assisted a long while back on a production that used Super 16mm glass and they were indeed picky to film in the actual format size.

To do this in earnest you want to extract 2848x1686 from whatever format and resolution you're filming in. It would be sub-3K in this case. And you'll notice this is a 1.69:1 ratio, which is unusual and not a standard for anything digital these days. This is actually ever so slightly larger than S16 with about a 0.02mm diagonal variance.

I do agree a 3K mode on Komodo would be handy for such things as you would get more fps and it would be less of a frame extraction to do things S16 related.

I wonder why S16 modes aren't offered more since it's just a heavy crop essentially but, admittedly, I think we may not see a truly great S16 mode until we get into 8K and beyond since resolution loss won't be as apparent. I know we filmed some high frame rate 2K stuff on my RED One MX for a key shot in my first feature and while the S16 2x crop mode wasn't too bad to work with since we had enough physical room to step back and make up for the loss of coverage with our FF lenses and a couple of APSC selections, I could see that the 2K result was not ideal compared to the 4K S35 footage but if there were more resolution it would certainly be a very interesting possibility when paired with some nice S16 lenses.

It's 4K mode covers S16 pretty much on the nose.
