So does anyone have a stylus suggestion that they really like? Looking on amazon there are a million options, but they all seem to say in some reviews that the tip wears out quickly or breaks off, etc. So I am just looking for a durable, affordable stylus that I can use with the touchscreen.

Careful. This product is designed for capacitive touch screens (e.g. the glass screens on Apple devices). If we are talking about something to work with the RED 5" LCD, I think you need to be looking at a stylus designed for resistive touch screens.

Good to know, thanks. At least I'll only be out a few bucks if it doesn't work. Any risk in using a stylus designed for capacitive, or will it just not function?

edit: According to other posters in this thread, the RED Touch LCD is capacitive and the original stylus I posted is a valid option.

Looks like I got the wrong stylus :-/ So, back to the original question...

a bit of quick research suggests that resistive touch screens work by pressure alone... so just about anything that will not actually scratch the screen will work. There is an example on the web of a home made stylus using a standard mechanical pencil with a wacom plastic pen nib instead of graphite... sounds simple enough... and worth a try if you have a wacom stylus to test you could try that... when I have a screen I will test this.

Am i wrong, or does the stylus from Nintendo DS would work ? If i'm right Nintendo also use resistive screens.
It's quite small, easy to stick it somewhere on the camera body.

since there are conflicting impressions in this thread perhaps someone from Red can clear this up. Is the touch screen resistive or capacitive? Or is it technology from another dimension :-)
thanks

That's because styluses made for resistive displays won't work. I believe RED's Touch 5" LCD uses a capacitive touchscreen.

FYI, Just tried my Wacom Intous4 pen and it does not work. Just thought I would add that because it's not easy to determine from Wacom's site what type of technology they use on different tablets.
Looks like the Intous line uses EMR (electro magnetic resonance) and Bamboo uses capacitive surfaces, although Wikipedia states they both use EMR...

Careful guys! The RED 5.0 Touchscreen is not resistive!

It is indeed capacitive, the difference is easy to tell just by touching it. Resistive screens have a "give" you can feel. Not to mention RED has said that theirs is a capacitive screen in the past.

All right, there appears to be some confusion here about touchscreen technologies...

RED Touch 5" LCD: Capacitive (sensitive to touch; do not touch the display with hard, pointy objects)
iPhones/iPads: Capacitive (advertised as "multi-touch")
Nintendo DS: Resistive

Only use styluses made for capacitive displays (e.g. made for iPhones/iPads) on RED's Touch LCDs. Do not use styluses made for graphics tables (e.g. Wacom Intuos pens) or resistive displays (Nintendo DS stylus). Also, other objects such as erasers are not a good idea. If you want to control a RED Touch LCD, use your finger. If you don't want to use your finger, then use a stylus made for capacitive displays. But, do not use any random object or you risk scratching and/or damaging the display.

Read about this option on Reduser a while back. I like it because it's got a clip, the tip is not a sharp point, and it's RED.
Still waiting for it to arrive, but it seems like it's going to work fine.

Ok, it looks like I totally screwed up this thread. I offered this stylus as a solution and warned it would not work, even though it's labeled as capacitive touch and made for iDevices...

You didn't screw anything up, Jeff. There's just a lot of misinformation in this thread. You've been on the money, that stylus will work just fine.
