  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Strasbourg 9pm - 1am with Dragon, low light ...

i know the 1DX, it´s more sensitiv - but when you use ADD for stills (and even for motion) you can achieve a quite high ISO with Dragon
so or so, in controlled light Dragon Raw is always superior to the 8bit stuff from the Canons, in low light they perform very good actually.
but higher framerates, no Rolling Shutter issues, Raw ... all is with Dragon ;-)

Jan, thanks for posting.

One question:

I was fooling around with one of the R3D files in RCX (the one with the house), and maxed the saturation to 2.0. I noticed a very noticeable purple outline for the yellow street sign on the right. Anyone else noticed that or is it just me?

mmh. how did you get that . i throw it in redcine with WB and sat+ too, but i don´t see it that strong as you have it ...

Jan-

See workflow attached. I did select Preset 4 (P4) in the look Curve option. Nothing else major though. I find this repeatable in very bright and contrasty objects.

Kemalettin-

I know how to remove it and it's saturation specific, not Alchemy or Clarity. I'm asking anyone here for a technical explanation if possible.

Thanks!

yes, i think its alchemy . i put your WB on it without alchemy, and its ok, the "glow" is the white frame i think - i can´t tell very much here, as i never use alchemy honestly ...

The Clarity slider certainly elevates the blue halo around the sign. Might be slight CA? But surely it's not an issue if you have to crank the saturation and Alchemy attributes to unrealistic values.

Nice shot Jan, thanks.

There's almost a complete day/night cycle there...

here are some samples from our night shoot with the Dragon - the "bridge" image is interesting, showing, what you can do with a VERY dark set, using all tools (yes this is ADD, but where is the problem - i think you are not able to shoot this with many other cameras in a quite crisp native 6K frame ... saying this, with DEB, it´s even better (what you see is without DEB, all images are without DEB) - i will ask RED to post the workflow of this result - it was really dark here, but it is useable even on a 4K screen)

this stuff is graded with Da Vinci and some Photoshop, i will upload some R3D and would be interested, what you get out of the RAW - all tricks of grading are allowed, noone takes a Raw and throw this on a screen (sometimes i think some expect this when i read all the discussions here)

for me, it´s time to thank the RED team for this camera, Jarred Land, Graeme, ... Jim, ... i was a director and DP a lot of time and worked for commercials and television, earned good money, and i was bored someday. i decided to do my own thing, own company, i started at zero, with an old 16mm camera, a dvx 100 and hvx200 - and started 2007 / 2008 with R1 into the adventure of digital cinema, as i could not pay for 35mm with my first clients ... low budget stuff. Genesis, Arri D21, ... no chance. With Red, all changed. I don´t want to give too much honey here ... but RED is a big part of the success of me and my small but fine company. with all the harsh critics here in the last weeks, i want to say this to the RED team, i will support it now, and in future (and there are tons of projects in the pipeline for my company) - maybe some say we are kind of fanboys. why not.

Flickr + dropbox preview oversharpens a bit the jpgs, for best result use wetransfer or download the dropbox stuff

Thanks for Sharing Jan, and thanks for the kind words. It means alot to myself and the team.

Love these two shots:

Thanks for sharing R3D's Jan!

the street looks pretty cool Matt - the R3D´s are rich, aren´t they ? ;-)
hope to have time to do edit the motion of the stuff next week

Pics look great

Amazing at how much can be squeezed out of or interpreted from the same image. This really shows the flexibility.

great stuff.

the streetlights against that sky are awesome

Jan, you're just a few kms from us in Alsace, it would be nice one day if we could get our hands on your small Dragon, just to caress it ;-)

Cheers,

Kristin
