  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Storm...

Red Cine-x is the best software package on the market in my opinion for grading a "Best light" to then take into an edit suite like AVID or others.

I finish in Avid Symphony so there is no advantage for me to purchase storm at this stage from what I can see from using the trial version.

Red Cine-x with Red colour2 / Red gamma 2 or Redlog Film is an awesome combination.
Also having a Red rocket card like I have (Luckily) makes life very simple.

I export all my RED footage to Red Colour2/ Red Gamma 2 or sometimes red logfilm to AVID DNX 185X which is the highest level of avid export ( I WISH I COULD HAVE AVID UNCOMPRESSED IN BOTH YUV and RGB 4:4:4 PLEASE JIM MAKE THIS HAPPEN)
and i have never yet had a problem.

The RED footage never falls apart and looks fantastic in AVID, even with the most "out there" grades.

As soon as there is a Win64 version I'm all over it...

One of the coolest things out of storm is real time scopes if you are monitoring off your red rocket. That said, there is still some lag time when playing a clip from the UI and monitoring on your monitor off RR card. I always found myself (with RCX) turning off my RR monitor to view the scopes, then going back to RR monitor...a lot of back and forth. But storm seems to have solved that issue. However the beta i have still has a few bumps in the workflow. So i'm fully committed to RCS UNTIL Storm has tackled their bugs.

Three questions:

1. Peter Majtan (I think) said a few months ago that Storm would work well with 2/3 Scarlet files, even without a Red Rocket. Don't know exactly what he meant. Any details?

2. Does Storm work with HDRx™™™™ files?

3. Does Storm include MNMB?

Storm doesn't need to have a redrocket but obviously its very beneficial. 2/3" will work fine without redrocket but it still depends on the system that it is running on.
Yes to points 2 and 3.

The power of HDRx™™™ is the multiple options you have to use it.

1. Combine the two tracks in post tools like REDCINE-X, Storm or any other application that supports the SDK to create "Magic Motion" (see below).

Right now, RCX still do the job better, by a long stretch, but let's hope Storm can rock the boat soon.

I'm taking Jim's advice and re-rendering some old (build 16!) R3Ds to take advantage of the new color science (stunning!), and I'm using Storm for it. I like Storm a lot, so far, but I'm a bit sad that my RED Rocket mobile isn't seen by this beta of Storm. I'm sure if it were installed in a tower it'd be different. We will buy a copy when it's out of beta.

Stupid question, but you have enabled "Use RED Rocket (if available)" in the STORM preferences, haven't you?
