  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Stills from motion...

Am I correct that this EPIC test was with the 'Stills' feature and not an individual frame captured from motion? If these images were captured as stills, can you tell us how they would differ from a graded image exported from RAW motion? Is resolution and color space comparable? What sort of RAW image are you originally capturing in 'stills' mode?

The threads name is:
Stills from motion.

I guess that's a giveaway....

PS: as for Sanjin´s wish for a Leica S mount. Jim was referring to Leica PL glass in his reply, while a future Leica S mount could probably turn up as a 3rd party product.

Peter,

I can't agree more what you've wrote above and just to add on this that Jim is looking

for something that is in Leica language described as an OPTICAL EXCELLENCE.

Also I have doubts that third party made Leica S2 mount on EPIC can deal with

shutter and fast/precise AF that can be achieved with S2 lenses without deeper integration to EPIC system

probably something similar that RED did with Canon/Nikon AF lenses.

All that means EPIC S35 would get a middle or "sweet" spot from Leica S2 lenses

something like a red rectangle that is shown at the picture below:

Leica S2 and Epic 5K image size comparison.

So if RED would follow what I said and desired here than EPIC could reach a focus precision similar

as at the pictures linked below taken from Leica S2 Sample Shot by David Farkas:

My point is that Leica can't make motion/still digital camera as an EPIC and

RED can't make optically excellent lenses as a Leica.

So why not to merge those two red dots from Leica and RED.

It is about an idea to build a perfect digital still and motion acquisition system with EPIC.

Also there is "Manual aperture and shutter speed setting/page 39." with S2 camera that means

this feature can be reached maybe in the lab on EPIC with a kind of "electronically cut & limited function" of S2 mount for lens testing purpose only.

I like the look better than Nikon or Canon. If the features are there I will sell the DSLR and go all the way.

I have the odd feeling that, had I been there, I would have been drooling over the camera and not the model.

I see a lot of magenta in the left side of her hair and green tone in the right part of her hair. Is it because of the light?

This is the best stills from motion camera that i have ever seen ! Cant wait to see it in motion

Is it possible to get the RAW image to test ourselves?

I guess the point is that still photographers have a use for EPIC.

Jim

Indeed Jim, and that is what I'm also looking for out of the Epic, even so I'll be getting a Leaf 645 System, do to the need of large prints with the most amount of detail possible, and since my FAVORITE 645 Epic is not here yet, I'll have to dump 50k on yet an other MF system, good only for 1.5 Frames per Second, and NO Motion ;(.

As far as the first image, I love it!! However, not to be critical about a sample Still extraction form Motion and the work of a fellow Photographer, but I would love to see more sharpness then that, and see the sparkle in the eyes, Again.. obviously coming from a Still Extraction form Motion, it is Fantastic, but surely No good in off for a Still to print, at list for some of the work I like to do with it, yet again PLease do take this in the knowledge of what we see here on screen with Compression Artifacts and all, still Incredibly impressed, just I would like to see more sharpness and that eye sparkle ;) also I'm writing this with out even knowing with the Photographer was going for here, and possibly He was not even trying to get the Sparkle out of the eyes, but focus just off thru the Air line above, but since it is well practiced that the Eye should always be Sparkling in sharp Focus, I responded accordingly ;)

Before, Strait out of Camera... After with simple pass thru Photoshop WB, Skin smoothing and Eye Color & Contrast (client's Request)

I agree, great shot from motion, the colors look vibrant, but the area about the eye and nose look a little soft, especially for portrait work where the eyes are the focal point. I am not sure if this was the look the photographer wanted but to achieve but it would be nice to see how a portrait (like above) would look under standard lighting conditions. I think it would give a better idea of resolution quality; please don't take this as a criticism, just an observation.

I agree, great shot from motion

It's a still, not a frame selected from a video. At least that's how I understand it.

If this is from a framegrab from a video, all other camera companies might as well shut down their operations.
